Days Gone |Review Thread|

If I ignored games under a certain score based on Metacritic, I'd have missed out on one of my top 5 games this gen.

Spintires Mudrunner (metascore 67). I can see how it might not score highly but it is still a unique treasured experience I keep going back to.

I generally avoid games under high 70s MC, especially at release. There are a few I have played under 80 but all of them have been purchased at deep discount or gift:

The Order 1886 - 63 : I actually thought this was awesome in almost every area except lack of combat time and the bad QTE. I think a sequel could be great but the score on this one is correct.
Killzone Shadow Fall - Lifeless campaign that was obviously rushed for PS4 launch, the MP is awesome.... I'm fine with the score but the MP is a 9+.
Mad Max - 69 : Again, really freaking awesome in many areas but the combat was over and over melee, which made all the missions a slog at some point - did not finish this.
Until Dawn - 79 : Real good game, these niche type games will never score super high.
Wolfenstein The New Order - 79 : Actually just started this a month or so ago.... so far I don't like it much.... but still early in the game.

The issue with this game I think there are some very low scores that don't really match up with what is being said and what is on the screen, and on the other end of the spectrum the people that like it really loved it. The digital foundry and electronic playground reviews basically sold me on this one and I almost never buy games on release day anymore.

Are you fucking for real, lol. I'd like for them to explain how freakers are real in real life.

There are a lot of people wondering their inconsistences(aka nitpicks) on their video review. Not sure it was a review or someone mad at the game, but it doesnt look good from the amount of dislikes.

I can't believe it's become "political" to complain about the very generic main character in this fairly generic game.

He's a generic character design because he looks exactly like the gruff bearded protagonists in many many other games of this type. His whiteness isn't politically grating to me, it's just one of the many features that feel too familiar.

Had he been white and male but also, say, beanpole skinny with thick glasses, or elderly, or overweight, people wouldn't be calling the design generic.

And I think this is typical of the broader problem: it isn't just the design looking familiar, they discuss the character's backstory and that feels generic too, and then they discuss the game's world, and so does that, and so on. I don't see any flourishes of imagination here to differentiate Days Gone from other zombie games.

Wow many games of this type huh? Full Throttle came out 25 years ago. What else?

A black woman would be too Michonne and they would get trashed for it.

Playing as an overweight biker? Seriously? The game would get trashed even more.

Overused generic (word we use when we don't want to call him a cracker) white dude (word we use when we're sexists) riding a symbolism of male aggression.

An interesting non-generic human being riding a colorful and uniquely designed transportation vehicle which not only looks stylish but will also help save the climate during the zombie apocalypse.

Seriously though, if you go to walmart #2 is more generic than #1, and they actually ride the scooters in the store. :messenger_grinning:

Wow
Only getting a 72 average from critics and a 71 average from users like us (when looking at Metacritic)

Before I plunge I'm going to actually read what are you guys who bought the game have to say

I understand what you're saying and in a way you have a point but the issue is some reviewers aren't just saying he's generic, they literally single out his whiteness as an issue

Beside them being racist pigs. I'm not even sure which games are overusing this type of character. Other than Mad Max main character, and maybe Joel from TLOU not sure which games are overusing this type of character, my collection is actually void of this - this is actually the type of game I have been looking for. I mean I would probably have to go back to my X360 Gears of War days to find anything remotely like this, and that game used all kind of races, and they weren't really grounded.

Of course, every ninja/samurai game - which there are a ton now has a slim Asian fellow running the show, and I don't see these same people saying how generically Asian that is.... I wonder why?

Bioshock Infinite and any modern Rockstar game come to mind.

Agree with Bioshock Infinite, man, I finished that game (I have no idea how) but it was not good... not good at all. At least I got it for sub $10.

The expected damage control from the usual suspects was expected.

Playstation fanboys have spent the last few years putting every ounce of weight behind reviews. If you didn't care for GoW, and mentioned it, you were immediately shut down with "Just look at the reviews. The majority of reviews said it's a masterpiece."

On the flip side, it you happened to enjoy something like State of Decay 2 or something, you got hit with "Look at the meta and review scores. It's trash... Just like all MS exclusives lately."

Now we're led to believe that this is all some sjw agenda? Or the reviewers must have not played the whole game, and got to the good parts?

Anyone who's been paying attention about this game could've seen this coming. It looked very 'meh' to begin with, and it reviewed as such. Sony fanboys can't question reviews now. You've been leaning on them far too hard, for far too long for that.

Off the top of your head do you know who shat on State of Decay 2?

We all know it is code for just being a CIS yt male. So they use mental gymnastics around excuses that can't hold any weight.

For any who are still on the fence. Victor Lucas loved it and gave it a 9.5 in electric playground. The dudes been in the business longer than most modern reviewers have been alive and he knows his shit.

Just watched it, it sounds legit. Like a person that actually played it for what it is and none of that SJW bs.

OOF, this game got absolutely blasted. Can't say I didnt see it coming though.

Looks generic and uninspired.

There's a good chance that Sony might close Bend down.

How much did they spend on making this game and will they make that money back?

Most of the large developers don't break down individual development/marketing costs. Not sure where you guys are getting that's not selling. I would imagine compared to their (Sony) other games development costs are fairly low, the bulk of the game was built with only 50-80 people.

The lowest reviews are SJW that rant about evil-white-man doing things of evil-white-man so this is a similar case to Detroit Become Human, a good game with lower scores than deserved due to the lefties bias. Not the least surprising.

By the way, it's gonna be a commercial success so those critics are gonna eat crow despite their piss-poor reviews.

Did reviewers actually call out the guy for being ethnically European? That's sad. 😂. There is nothing wrong with having a white guy as a lead role. I'm so sick of the anti-white bullshit.

I've had my fill off open world repetition so I'm looking at this game from afar.

But I'm curious if anyone is scrutinising the journalist reviews for bias against a game seemingly not conforming to intersectional progressive ideology. When you look at activist sites like Waypoint there would seem to be some credence to this.

Curiously the game is all but deplatformed from Eurogamer's front page aka, no longer showing bar a footnote, which is curious for game just out together with excellent DF articles.

I never trust "critic" reviews. Some games I like haven't been rated great.

Also, If I'm reading a review and the reviewer complains that the main character is a white male, I completely disregard that reviewer. Gender or race of the main character is irrelevant.

Personally, I'm really enjoying the game so far. The AI could use a bit of work, but I've been having tons of fun cruising the beautiful landscape, burning out Freaker nests, completing tasks, scavenging, putting the hurt on douchebags, and unlocking skills.

I like the random encounters. I've been chased by wolves and had to hide from a sniper. I watched as a group of aggressive people had to defend themselves from a wolf. I also got caught in a snare trap hidden in some bushes and was hanging in the air like Joel during that one part in The Last of Us. Then some dude knocked me out and I woke up imprisoned in a little shack. They took all my weapons and supplies (except the default knife, conveniently).

I love luring the "zombies" into bear traps or luring them to hostile people.

This is a game I will strive to unlock every trophy for. 👍

It was my revenge for the serious stupidity that he committed sony for not showing a masterpiece like Gravity rush 2 and showing a garbage like Days Gone in E3.

Fuck you Jim Ryan.
Gravity Rush 2 couldn't be further from a masterpiece. In fact, it killed the series lmao.

Yes, I tried it at a friend's house and while I thought it was slightly better than the original, it still didn't click with me in the slightest.

Well for me and other people is a amazing game.

Trust me, i dont judge you. but i hope you can try it again =).

I am sure you love it, and that is great, but do not kid yourself and think that it would have the mass appeal no matter how much marketing would be dumped into it.

There are many niche games that I feel the same way about as well, and have that fond love for, but know it will not light the world on fire with mass appeal no matter what.

Sad, but true.

I Wish that more gamers play this marvelous game.

All games except Nintendo go on sale fast so its not just Sony.
True, but Sony games have even more aggressive price cuts. It's a good thing really from a consumer standpoint.

Horizon, God of War, and Gravity Rush 2 all got very cheap, very quickly.

For some this is cause for joy. Pokemon Sun/Moon is R$ 199,90(ultra moon/sun R$249,90 on amazon.com.br) here in Brazil, unlike God of War R$119,90.
Thats mean:
Pokemon Sun/Moon - $50,87
Ultra Sun/Moon - 63,59
God of War - 30,51
Good for consumers, but act like a fuel for fanboys.

I just had a phone call with a Sony Representative and asked whether I should buy Days Gone since the Metacritic score was lower than average. The Sony Representative was very kind and asked me to go fuck myself. Also, they said I should ignore the Betacritic score and buy it for just $59.99 at a local GameStop near me.

Well, did you do what the nice rep suggested?

I'm referring to buying the game at GameStop...

Why wouldn't they suggest the PlayStation Store? Horrible at their job.

I literally can't remember a videogame with a biker protagonist outside of Gone Days.

The dude from The Last Of Us was far more "generic", to cite an example.

Hell, almost every black character or "strong womyn" trope are generic as fuck, yet they never complain about those, they always celebrate them.

Because yes, they can't hide their obvious political agenda.
The main character does not come off as a real biker at all..in fact you could pretty much put Nathan drake in this game and it would not be any different character wise

GTA the lost and the damned was the last good biker in a game ...bikers are not soft pussies like deacon (enforcer lol) they shoot first and ask questions later... this game doesn't nail that from a character point of view
