DC Universe to get fresh start (Superman & Batman Reboot)

That superman picture is like..right out of mkvsdc. That's the exact pose superman has when he lands after kicking the other dude down the level. That's..like exactly the pose. I wish I could find a screen cap. I wonder if the artist based it off of that.

If this Superman is suppose to be "Ultimatized," why is he still wearing the primarily red/blue costume? Red/Blue colors can be used as outlines for a redesigned costume. Those bright colors never looked good when shown in real life. Batman's costume looked a bit more modernized though.

Waid also brought about a new (or arguably, reintroduced an old) vision power, sometimes referred to as "soul vision." Essentially, Clark can see the "aura" surrounding a living being--an aura that disappears when they die. Waid introduced this as a way of explaining why Clark feels so compelled to defend life, as he can literally see it. Going along with this power, Waid also changed Clark into a vegetarian. These decisions have met with mixed reactions from fans.

The whole changing him into a vegetarian thing is such bullshit. Bithright was a huge mix of things I thought were cool and things (like this) that just made me roll my eyes so hard. It just feels forced and hey the hip thing is being vegan we should make Clark that.

For me the Byrne Superman is still the definitive Superman.

im talking about the designs. they're awful.

Well, I agree.

They should at least update Superman's design. There are a bunch on the net that look great and are not completely offensive to the source material. Like this.

But as long as the story is good, it shouldn't matter what they look like. At least too much.

Oddly I seem to be one of the people who is not bothered by Superman's totally retro (at this point) 1930's hero suit.

I guess to me it just seems that Superman is the one true epitome of human perfection, courage, hope, etc, so he gets to wear the skyblue tights and bright red cape. As he is usually portrayed visually, with his chiseled look, he also fits the part. It's like seeing a statue of a Greek god come to life. If a normal guy tried to dress up like say, Zeus, he'd just look silly. But if a vision of human perfection stepped down off the mount in the outfit, he'd command respect.

So Superman commands respect in his mighty tighties and big cape.

Edit: meant to add that it was the story of Superman walking across America talking to folks that helped cement this image of Superman for me. The way his suit and image look, he is begging the modern cynical world to sneer at him, with its burnt-out mores and lack of patience for the sheer gall to suggest an ideal. Supe's appearance is practically a challenge to cynicism itself. Go ahead and roll your eyes or call him names - he's still Superman, and you're the one on the outside the bars - so to speak.

That's a good point Kaijima, but today's audiences are a lot more critical to how people look, especially with what they watch.

Case in point: Speed Racer movie vs. Iron Man movie

They want realism. And if they don't get what they want, people start complaining, even though it not being realistic is the whole appeal.

Remember when people started complaining that Indy 4 was ridiculous, even though the past three Indy movies featured stunts and scenes just as ridiculous?

Well, he's an alien who's taken it upon himself to protect the inhabitants of Earth. Some humans may view non-human animals as inherently inferior, but I doubt Kal-El would.

This one was beautiful.

So Ultimate DC, written for trade and actually released as a trade? Count me in. I'm a really big fan of Alfred's design. They seem to be channeling old Bruce Wayne from Batman Beyond.

I'll probably get Superman: Earth One. Mostly waiting to be fascinated by a Johnsian take on Batman, especially if he's free of continuity hell.

:lol Forgot about this. Is Alfred not a butler in this one?

That wasn't one of the official concepts. It was done for a magazine article.
sure as hell got my hopes up... i love that design :<

by the way, the thread title is misleading. it makes it sound like DC is resetting their main line.

Considering where Batman is going right now, that would be fucking horrific. "Hey remember all that awesome game changing shit that's going on in Batman's life? REBOOT!"

1) I may get Johns' Batman. It sounds interesting enough of a concept, and I love his writing.

2) JMS' Superman has made me cancel the main Superman book, so there is no way I'm supporting his mess.

3) You don't fucking change Superman's suit. I'd be willing to accept up to a 5% update, but those in this thread are heinous. You especially don't change the S-Shield.

Carry on.

yeah, you can't change his uniform. it's part of him in more ways than one.

How is this a radical departure from the classic suit?

He grew up as a farm kid from the heartland of America. Making him a vegetarian is just so rolleyes inducing. I don't think I've ever met a farmer in my life that was a vegetarian. Like I said its trying to be some super moral bullshit.

I also agree that you don't change the suit. The designs in this thread are horrible.

*edit*

I'd just like to add the image above my post is INSANELY stiff and lacking of energy. Who ever said this guys are work was super stiff is definitely right. Putting some bend into Superman's spine up there would help BIG TIME, and he wouldn't feel like he had a rod going from his ass to this neck then.

is this unique to america or do other countries/cultures constantly rehash old shit to make more money?
Its a human thing. People rehash old jokes to get new laughs. Men rehash sexual moves used on one girl to please another. Ive made this exact point before on IGN years ago when someone complained about the abundance of sequels in the gaming industry.

We do whats familiar because there is little risk. This is nothing new.
