Dead Island |OT| Island of the Dead

I purchased a retail/boxed copy of this game for PC last night. Upon attempting to install it this morning, I was met with the dreaded Duplicate CD Key error stating that it's already bound to another Steam account.

While I understand Steam Support is ridiculously understaffed, it's still rather annoying that the ticket I submitted at 7:25 AM CST with all required proof of purchase has yet to be touched 9 hours later. I'll more than likely have to wait the entire weekend to play a game I acquired legitimately while some cock gobbler out there enjoys it for free.

Unlucky.

This game is an absolute blast with co op. I'm assuming your enjoyment of it with co op increases exponentially with how well you know the people you're playing with. I'm having a great time.

I dunno wtf I'm doing because I'm level 36, 28 hours in, and still in Act 3. There's an insane amount of shit in the jungle to do.

I can't find a single online game ... Anybody know why ? The search just comes up with nothing ( PS3 ).
Are the coop servers down or anything ?

Edit : Nevermind, didn't understood the online parameters in the options, should be fine nao

Edit 2 : i see games, but I can't join any. No idea why.

If you're playing on PS3 you may want to stay in offline single player till the next patch is released. Playing coop is randomly stopping the game from saving your progress. I lost about 5 hours of progress but since I started playing with 'singleplayer' mode and also started signing out of PSN on the title screen everything has been saving properly.

There is loads of info about this issue out there. I'm going to save coop for my 2nd playthrough.

That's true for any co-op game, though.

The real test whether it's still fun solo. And it is. Being a good zombie outbreak simulator peppered with genre homages and a competent combat system makes this one a winner.

About 4 hours in now; having a lot of fun. The only problem is - I feel like I suck.

I can't seem to get the hang of analog combat, and Thugs are constantly brutalizing me. Any tips for a solo Xian player?

Start feeling your way into the combat system with digital. You'll get a sense for your overall timing without having to worry about the execution.

Never take on too many zombies at a time. Definitely single out thugs and keep your distance until you've taken care of every walker and infected in the vicinity. Back away from Infected and kick until they are down. Control the crowd by keeping the stronger zombies down while taking care of the walkers. Seek out water/pools as the added damage helps out in the beginning.

Thugs should give you the most trouble, they are tough bastards and there's no cheap way to handle them other than learning to judge the correct distance and timing of their attacks (and your own). As someone aptly put earlier, you need to "box" with them.

Alright, I finally decided to trade for this on Steam. You guys better be right about this. Or else... I dunno, I guess I'll just be really salty about it.

Thanks much for the suggestions; I'll try them out tonight. I've tried to dodge the attacks of the Thugs and follow up with a counter attack, but their recovery time seems crazy fast and they end up clocking me anyway.

Xian struggles with thugs until she gets a blade with some reach like a machete with which to lop off their arms. Just save up your Fury and slash slash slash, they'll be essentially stun-locked the whole time and they go down really fast.

You'll be dreaming of zombies and humming Who Do Ya Voodoo Bitch in no time, don't you worry.

I haven't put any points in Fury yet - do I have a low-level Fury from the start, or do I need to unlock it?

You do need to unlock it. One point in the tree to unlock it is mandatory for any character in my opinion, after that it's up to you whether you continue with it. I have a level 30 Xian and I find that putting points into Fury really helps when dealing with larger enemies since she remains fairly squishy, relying on dodging and attacking fast and deadly to stay alive, so it's nice to have a WIN button handy for when you run into something which keeps kicking your arse.

Okay, I'll put my next point into Fury for sure. You sound like you've had experience with multiple characters - is that the case? If so, do you have a favorite?

I've spent a bit of time with all of them, mainly Purna and Xian because of the people I've been playing with.

Sam B is definitely the most fun because he's got a huge amount of survivability; you can spec him so that he generates stamina while being hurt and regenerates health constantly so you don't need to heal as often. He can charge into a group of zombies and knock them all down too, which is perfect because he specialises in blunt weapons which generally do more damage to grounded targets due to their high force rating.

Purna has the best Fury ability; she pulls out a pistol which auto-targets, doesn't need to reload and (I think) has a 100% crit rate, so you can mow down a big group of zombies. It's hard to find guns during the first act but they're plentiful after that, and the first half of her combat tree is blade focused anyway. My Purna is now level 43 and up to the third Act of a NG+ run, with a legendary axe and katana, epic shotgun and pistol, so it's about half and half shooting and slicing. I'd say she's my favourite but she's also Australian so I'm biased.

Xian starts out a little weak but does do a lot of damage later. Spec'd right she does lots of blade damage (give her a sword and watch the heads fly), has loads of stamina and a chance to insta-kill enemies. Just make sure you abuse the hell out of jump-kicking when you're dealing with groups early on and you'll be sweet.

Logan is... I dunno. I didn't enjoy him much, only played a few levels. He's similar to Sam B at the start because of the blunt focus, but the throwing thing just seems like it's only really useful if you spec all the way to 50% Boomerang in the Survival tree and I feel like you'd be losing a lot of raw damage from Combat skills which would make things tedious. I might give him another go at some stage but most likely in co-op to ease the learning-curve.

I'm gonna play as Logan my first time. Throwing sounds fun, that's actually one of the things I'm most looking forward to from RAGE (though their hit reaction system being so awesome is part of that).

About how many skill points do you get?

1 Per level.

I have Logan's Fury way high as well as the two Perks that offset how long it takes to Fury. Lemme tell you, I can easily take out two thugs 4 infected and 4 walkers in one fell swoop. My wife just goes, "WTF JUST HAPPENED?!" as they all drop on her screen within seconds. In addition I get a huge XP bonus when I unleash it with enough zombies present.

Some of the random pub games I go into are pretty fucking hilarious.

I was watching some random do a mission, the host was doing an early mission getting the
fuel and juice boxes
, he finally gets it all in the back of the pickup and another random just hijacks the car and drives it to the otherside of the map into the water and logs off...

Just started NG+ to see what it was like and all locations were unlocked... is it supposed to be like that?

Yes, which SUCKS because I was 2 locations away from getting the trophy. Some of the design choices are baffling.

Logan is so damn strong without his fury that I just went by with one point, and use it mainly for the XP bonus on mobs.

I mean, by the time you get to the end of his combat tree you can get +50% or so to throw damage, +49% to crits, 30% AOE damage per throw, and 30% Frenzy Damage. Pop in Drunken Damage from Survival for an extra 60% damage and shit is insane. The AOE also affects status effects as well. Then once you get righteous boomerang... hoooooooooly shit.

Really, the only real problem with Logan is that throwing is annoying at first with a lot of micromanagement and sometimes you lose your best weapon because it clipped into the ground. But it's worth it when almost every special enemy becomes a joke.

- from what I've seen having a Purna in your co-op group makes everything more viable. Her fury is sick and she's the best support character in the game, with her aura and all.

They did a good job balancing the characters though - they all have their niche, and it works out well.

So you guys seem to mostly recommend analog combat? Worth using a controller for it?

Personally speaking the analog combat is what sold me on the game. On the GB quick look they said you can't do analog control with keyboard and mouse, so based on that you'd need a controller. But they might have been mistaken, I never saw that was confirmed to be true.

Yeah, I swapped over to a controller before I actually got started and I like it so far. The kick seems especially hilarious to me, I've spent a lot of time kicking zombies in the ass or stomping on them while they are drowning in pools.

Just so I have it right, with Logan, during Fury I have unlimited throwing knives right? It didn't look like I was throwing anything from my inventory, so I can just chuck stuff as fast as possible right?

Yeah, it's unlimited. Chuck away.

And it autolocks on as well. I never felt the need to have it hit more than 2 at once because of how fast it mows enemies down as is.

It's fucking amazing when you throw a flaming axe and light 4 enemies on fire, boomerang it back, swap out to an electrical weapon and shock all 4.

For the life of me, I cannot get Dead Island Helper to work. I have deleted and reinstalled the game twice now and I still cannot get it to work. I have custom set the folder to where /DI/out is and no luck.

Also gone to /Documents/DeadIsland/out and same thing :(

The game runs fine..it's just I cannot stand the bloom and fov :p

OK the missions where you have to fix the speakers all over town are pretty irritating. Please tell me the set in the town center is the last one!

Gunplay is lame.

Throw shit! Or kick them > chop head off.

I'm atleast glad headshots instantly kill them.

Yeah, it is. It's also the hardest one because of the damn infected everywhere.

So far in my top five games this year. Utterly shocked to see this turn out so well, especially after hearing about the bugs (which I thankfully haven't fun into yet).

Yep! I even feel like a second play-through already, which is rare!

Completed this at around 23 hours, did every side quest I could, and leveled up Logans Survival and combat tree with barely any focus on his fury. Overall... I had a blast with this game. Def one of my all time favs now. The game stayed fun and interesting the entire time for me. I loved the combat and while the story was sorta weak, I'm so used to that just being apart of the zombie genre, it all somehow felt like it fit.

I do have to wonder though about some things
like what happened to all the people from the begining? Are they just still there, you never go back and find out whats happening with them
Other then that, everything else was great! I was lucky and didn't experience any major glitches.

As I approach the mid-level 30s, the game is getting tougher again. I felt like this with analog controls:

Levels 1-10: Yikes, still learning but cool.
Levels 1-20: Catching on, learning the delacies of analog and loving it.
Levels 21-30: I've mastered this shit, kinda getting too easy.
Level 30: Wow WTF.. I'm getting fucking rocked every two seconds.

At this point, I'm contemplating switching to digital. I hate it, it makes combat feel so generic and tasteless when compared to the precision and finesse of analog controls, but with the hordes of Infected that keep bombing me and how powerful thugs and the like are t this level, I really see no other way to combat them. Xian solo am cry.

Tried to enter some games last night on PS3, but all finished with an error ( player couldn't join or session not available ). No idea why again ...

And all those scary talk about the PS3 saves is really bugging me, I'd love to experience my first playthrough through coop.

Does anyone know how to turn off the auto item pick up in the PC version? I hate it when I accidently pick up a weapon which forces me to drop the one I'm using.
