Dead Island |OT| Island of the Dead

Every single person I've played the game with bitches about the sewers, Yahtzee made special mention of it in his video too. I'd just power through for now, the best act as far as scenery and stuff to do is Act III so I'd suggest just focusing on the story missions and blasting through to the next bit.

The problem with the city is that it's incredibly dense. If you do side quests you spend an insane amount of time going around in circles.

Well, you'd think that developers would know by now that no one likes sewer levels. It's the same deal as escort missions, but they keep on making them.

Anyways, it's nice to know that the rest of the game won't take place in the city. As long as there is a light at the end of the tunnel, I'll gladly power through this part.

I do like the game a lot, but Act II seems to ditch a lot of what made Act I so enjoyable.

I just finished the game yesterday, I was expecting a mediocre and a broken (glitchy), but it surprised me alot. I really enjoyed playing it and hope there is a sequel coming up sometime in the future. Yeah the sewer areas weren't the most fun parts of the game, but I just ran through those areas without fighting the mobs after the first time.

I think I'm done with the game for now, though I really did play a lot of it. For the record the XP needed to level from 49 to 50 is ~300k which is ~2000 regular zombies which need slaying.

The MMO grinder in me says you should grind that shit out =|

Yeah that's a fair call, one of my co-op partners started to audibly groan every time we got to a manhole cover. He was like "why the fuck, in a game which is at it's best when depicting tropical environments, did they decide to make us spend half this act in a fucking sewer?" It's not helped by the fact that the quest design at that point suddenly gets totally linear.

However, there is indeed light at the end of the tunnel. Of course, it's the same end you started at because the end of the sewer section has you backtrack through its entirety...

I've played through twice now and am going to start a third playthrough soon. The only complaints I have is that the fourth act is too short, most of the modded weapons look the same, and it takes too long for Purna to take advantage of her gun skills. Disappointment with the modded weapons is probably my fault because I kept thinking of Dead Rising in regards to how crazy they may be.

Just beat the game. While I liked it, I think this game could have been amazing if it had another year in development.

The plot made next to no goddamn sense especially towards the end. Was
Kevin actually Charon
? Why the fuck would that even matter? Also really disappointed in no
big reveal about the origin of the infection
.

Edit: Also final boss fight:
What a piece of shit. Took me like 10 minutes and as many deaths to realize I needed to run around back to the stairs.

Yeah, Kevin is Charon.

While I do wish there was more to the story, especially something on how those special enemies became the way they are, I've honestly never really cared a whole lot on what's going on in zombies stories. The survival has always been the most important aspect to me.

Is... what? I remember
Kevin
but the Dead Island Wiki has
Charon
listed as a cut character.

The big reveal is
in Act III after you kill Ope. The reason for the outbreak is that he told his people to eat the dead infected with kuru which disrupted the natural balance. His tribe had been living with the infection for generations but that fucked everything up and tipped the scales towards complete outbreak.

Wow, really? I thought the game made it obvious they were the same person, lol. I guess I put too much thought into it.

I think it's probably like the bit Wal was talking about with Linwood/John, they just fucked up the name in some of the voice-acting and hoped nobody would notice ;)

What really sucks is that looking through the global achievements on steam that most people don't even play analogue controls... I can't imagine playing without those. It'd probably suck a lot. And yes the plot is shit. It's not even enjoyably bad. I just ignored it and it was fine. I wasn't looking for a story anyway.

Oh trust me. I did.

Eh? I absolutely loved the sewer sections. I play solo, so Act 2 had the most intense sections, which was topped off by the extremely claustrophobic map-free, minimal lighting sewers. I thought it was brilliant.

After playing for several hours in the city, I've started to cool off on this game. I miss the open, lush environments of the Beach/Jungle area. I miss driving around and exploring the big and pretty environments. Not only is the city dreary and plain in comparison, but most of the environments are narrow and the sewers are a bitch. It doesn't help that the zombie count is much higher, I can't avoid them as easily. Technical issues aside, I had a blast with the first act, but it's starting to feel a bit tedious in the city.

I've been playing solo for the past few hours, so that's probably part of my problem. At least with a partner or two the zombie density won't be as annoying.

I was feeling the same way as soon as we got to the city. Especially when they introduced the
normal dudes with guns
as enemies I kind of made a poopy face.

I've made some time to play tonight if you want to do some co-op, as I really don't want to do this part solo either.

Once I got to the sewers I sold the game, it was just too frustrating for me playing single player. I bought it for £29 from Amazon and sold it for £38 on Ebay so good result, I did get about 20 hours play from it so it wasn't all bad. I loved the resort area, city and sewers just totally turned me off it.

Sounds like a plan. We need to pound it out.

Send me a steam message if you guys end up going for co-op. I'm in Third area now, but i've only been playing the game co-op so i've been out for awhile. Usually run with Lonestar, Auryn, Sutton, and Flunkie.

To each their own I guess. I've played that bit a few times co-op and a few times solo, never enjoyed it a great deal.

LOL.
I procced my Tesla mod Sledgehammer on him on my first swing, launched him into the helicopter, he took 72000 damage and promptly died from a single hit in 1 second.

Yeah he was easy once I
got to him. Detox mod shotgunned him until out of ammo, then sliced him up with Zed's Demise while he was puking. He never even touched me.

I finally raged hard enough to uninstall this game. Beating/slicing up zombies in the same repetitive way is only entertaining for so long. I never should have kept playing for so long. Piece of shit game.

I got to the part beyond the
jungle
, where you go on
Mowen's boat back to the resort
. I'm sure I haven't missed much but would like to hear the ending anyway, so if someone would be so kind to spoil it for me.

I liked the city part, would have liked for allowing more use of vehicles in the city though. The sewers did get boring quick though and had a few cases of zombies magically disappearing and popping up out of nowhere. I was looting a corpse when a suicider just popped into existence behind me and my friend was like "lol" he came out of the wall.

Act 4 overall was shit, rest of the game I enjoyed for the most part, had lot of fun with the game in coop.

Yeah, the City is just being brutal to me. And I haven't even hit the sewers yet, but I think I'm almost there.

It's just that, going solo, some of these sidequests take SO GODDAMN long. I literally took an hour to finish one, because I was going slowly and clearing out the areas ahead of me.

It doesn't help that I found out that if you're doing an escort mission (HATE) and the escort dies (HATE), any weapons that you've thrown disappear forever, unlike when YOU die and they remain in whatever or whoever you threw them into (which leads to funny situations, like me turning a corner to find the Thug who sneaked up on me and killed me next to the three machetes I had thrown into him just hanging suspended in the middle of the air).

This means that I have to cultivate a backup arsenal that I can afford to lose when an escort gets himself killed.

I'm currently doing the sidequest involving the loudspeakers and I almost want to cry because it's called The Second Head of Cerberus which undoubtedly means that there's ANOTHER part to it, and the quest giver is in a terrible area that always has TONS of walkers around.

At least I did learn that Rams die if you so much as touch them with a car.

It's not just the city but game in general gets harder and harder each act for those playing solo. Act 4 solo is a complete nightmare.

I don't think I'd mind it if I had more time, but I'm busy enough that I can maybe play for an hour each day, so I start wanting to rush things, and that's when I start making mistakes and dying.

It doesn't help that I've really begun to understand the weakness of throwing as my main attacking styles, because I also lost two of my best weapons when I got caught in a quarantine section and just kept dying until I had to just say "Fuck it" and get the hell out of dodge, leaving them behind.

It's such bullshit that zombies (or players, for that matter) level up.

You level up together, it makes no difference. It would be no different if there was no leveling up at all. All leveling does is give players more options for customization and abilities.

You get to the prison after finding the cure in the lab, the Colonel or whatever guy betrays you and takes the drug, you get to the rooftop where he's about to fly away with his zombie wife, for some reason Jin gets shot, the Colonel tries to cure himself but the cure turns him into a zombie, boss fight, end of game.

I don't think scaling is totally evil, but they should have caps for areas. So, for instance, if I head back to the beach right now, partway through Act 2 and at level 26, the highest level zombies I should be facing should be like 20 or something.

That would preserve the challenge of the game while also allowing for players to get that feeling of having become more powerful and a sense of progression. You know, that feeling of being like "God, this area was such a nightmare and now look at me cutting through them left and right!"

This is off-topic but kudos for knowing how many heads Cerberus has. And you probably don't want to hear this but the third part is the most annoying by far because of where the speakers are situated.

Edit: and the scaling in the game does actually cap, but only at the top end. My level 50 character only ever sees level 44 regular zombies at most.

Has anyone else done the Abandoned House quest in the city? I have never seen such rapid and frequent spawn of Infected, it was clearly broken that they kept spawning for like an hour, just on our way to the quest.

The game is fine on PC now though after the initial couple of patches. What else do they need to patch?

Whuuut? That's not really true for me. Act 2 was by far the hardest. By Act 3 you have access to the best weapons from the store, tons of money from selling rifles, and the zones you fight in are no where as cramped as Act 2. Also by the start of Act 2 you should have enough levels (without grinding at all) to reach the last ability of either the combat or support tree, which either means lots of free headstomps for Sam and Xian or 50% boomerang for Logan.

You probably were wandering through a Quarantine zone. When you're in there, Infected will infinitely spawn. You just have to get through it as fast as possible and not linger, just run.

So basically: Not a bug. A learning experience.

I just got to the Jungle on my second playthrough. Where can I find
Jason? He's the really hard human character i've heard so much about.

I'm prepared to die a lot, but I still want to try it.

There's a quest hub called Overpass Village in the north of the map, just to the east of where you start. There should be a path south from the eastern side of that village which takes you right to him.

He's not actually that hard, he just respawns between 1 and 30 seconds after you kill him so you end up having to kill him about 10 times trying to get away.
