Dead Island |OT| Island of the Dead

God damn.. I cracked. I bought the steam version when I told myself I wasn't going to buy any more games this year. I just noticed that it said it had steam achievements and cloud support and I couldn't resist.

I'm still excited for the game, but this sounds pretty bad

The only time the game forces you to reload and tackle a battle again is during escort missions, of which there are rather too many. Here you'll find that enemies are reset, but your weapons and items are not. Use up your Molotov cocktails and break your best weapon in a failed attempt and you'll have to try again with those handicaps already in place. Hoping for a herd-thinning fury attack is the only way out of this cycle of inevitable failure.

From the Eurogamer review said:
"What would happen if Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead went on a holiday to the Far Cry island?" That, in a blood-stained disembowelled nutshell, is Dead Island.

Its like they're whispering sweet nothings into my ear.

It's in the opening sections where the immediate desire to mash zombies to bits grinds most awkwardly against the restrictions of the RPG framework. Playing as a cop-trained firearms expert, only to be told you can't actually shoot a pistol because you're not level 10, is about as immersion-breaking as you can get.
This? Not so much.

Joystiq: 3/5

Dead Island is probably the most realistic recreation of the inevitable and oncoming zombie apocalypse in video game history. It's typified by desperation, sacrifice, frustration, terror and the overbearing sense of hopelessness.

But there's a catch. Though the zombie apocalypse may occasionally be grimly satisfying or fleetingly triumphant when you survive another night, there's one thing it almost certainly won't be.

Fun.

EDIT: Corrected 3.5/5 to 3/5. Thanks!

And since I'm editing, I should say - this game is still appealing to me, but I'll probably wait for a sale.

Its story is inane and pointless, yet I found a bonus enemy in the jungle with a hockey mask -- called Jason -- who had a secret chainsaw in his cabin. Dead Island is the kind of game that mercilessly punches you in the gut with one hand and gives you a slice of birthday cake with the other.

mmmm

Crazy how some reviews think the game looks great, while others say it looks average (graphics).

Dont see whats wrong with level restricted items in an RPG...of course an expert should start off with their weapon.

Yeah, that seems weird. If it's not fun, why give it any kind of decent score?

Well L4D2 got the same score from Joystiq, so I guess its more or less that they dont have much wiggle room with a 5 star scale.

Either way, im glad its a fun game, but with some shortcomings.

lol Google translate for the PC section of Gamereactor review:

For in between is Dead Island incredibly nice with incredibly detailed environments, huge and delicious-term effects. In particular, the PC has more 'wow' moment to revel himself to the lovely design and advanced technology meet in the graphics engine Chrome Engine fifth But other parts, as the undead themselves seem to be made of caramel sauce and dog food, which is fortunately only see when they come so close that they begin to gnaw at one's shoulder.

I guess thats good? Zombies dont sound like they taste good though.

Seems like a mess, but maybe a good one under the right circumstances. Guess I'll check out the prices once the second patch comes out.

i see its one of those mixed reaction games.

So its either you like it or don't I guess, no in between

Err, most of the reviews are very much 'in-between'...I haven't seen any that have completely panned it.

Not fun, but 3.5/5? :|

edit: just saw 3/5. Some reviewers need to reevaluate their priorities.

After the Nier debacle.

I have never even glanced at what that man thinks of games.

I suspect this will be one of those games that will be justifiably mocked by the majority for its many flaws but embraced by a forgiving minority, and passionately defended for its underdog status. Neither response will be entirely wrong. Much like gnawing on human flesh, Dead Island's clumsy horror-action role-player is the definition of an acquired taste.

yeah, that's the game for me.

Gametrailers review says there is a Day 1 patch incoming.

Par for the course this generation.

Only things combat wise that bother me judging from some of the reviews is the zombies having animations that you can't interrupt and inconsistent hit detection. The hit detection is big for me, hopefully the patch helps this.

For the reviewers that complained about the zombies latching onto you, that is why there is a quick dodge button that nobody seems to use. :)

True fact: zombie slaying rapper Sam B is voiced by Marvin from Pulp Fiction.

I knew I heard it before. (dude who has like 5 lines and then gets blasted)

EDIT: Oh wow I didn't know this dude did so many video game voices.

Aaaaaand with the other non-exclusive non-timed non-advertising supported review scores in, I am out. I'll wait until it's £15.

EDIT: It was this quote from Eurogamer that sealed the deal for me.

Much like the moaning corpses that you're destined to spend a lot of time hacking to pieces, Dead Island is a shambling, lurching thing, falling to bits in important areas and frankly a bit whiffy up close. It's also strangely compelling, provided you're a forgiving sort who doesn't flinch at wonky coding and weird design decisions.

I get enough playing unfinished bits of game at work, thanks.

wow talk about mixed reactions... I'll wait to see what giantbomb says. But I'm on the fence because I'd love to support a new ip.

Well there are non-exclusive, non-timed, non-advertising scores that give the game the equivalent of a 7 or an 8 as well. Its a mix of opinions.

I know, I was being difficult. But it definitely feels like the exuberance of the IGN review was somewhat unbalanced when taking in all the other factors (the adverts and exclusivity being the main culprits). Not saying it'll be a bad game - it looks fine - but it doesn't look like a masterpiece.

any word on a demo? This is one of those games that watching gameplay videos does nothing for me in being able to get a feel for the game.

Game Informer gave it an 8.5 as well:

I’ve played a lot of zombie games in my time, and Dead Island scratched an itch I didn’t even know I had. Cooperative undead survival is nothing new to gaming, but exploring a gigantic zombie-infested island with friends is. I easily poured over 40 hours into my playthrough, and a new game plus promises even more entertainment. Rewarding character progression and the vast variety of weapons should appeal to anyone looking for a good time. If you’ve spent your time planning for the zombie apocalypse, Dead Island is the best option so far to test how long you’d last.

Exploration, combat, looting, skills/weapons upgrades, everything in the game is well done and makes it fun to play. Because Dead Island also succeeds in keeping the player in the midst of danger (the game's difficulty is designed to make sure of that), the sense of survival is permanent, which should please the fans of the genre. Definitely a vintage wine.

Very positive wow.

EDIT: So much mixed reaction.

Nah, given that there are higher scores floating about and from descriptions I don't think an 8 is unreasonable.

how can ign and joytiq be talking about the same game? Joystiq made it sound like there was no redeeming qualities to this game.
