There's GAF impressions all over this thread.

The only time the game forces you to reload and tackle a battle again is during escort missions, of which there are rather too many. Here you'll find that enemies are reset, but your weapons and items are not. Use up your Molotov cocktails and break your best weapon in a failed attempt and you'll have to try again with those handicaps already in place. Hoping for a herd-thinning fury attack is the only way out of this cycle of inevitable failure.

interest+++++From the Eurogamer review said:"What would happen if Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead went on a holiday to the Far Cry island?" That, in a blood-stained disembowelled nutshell, is Dead Island.
This? Not so much. It's in the opening sections where the immediate desire to mash zombies to bits grinds most awkwardly against the restrictions of the RPG framework. Playing as a cop-trained firearms expert, only to be told you can't actually shoot a pistol because you're not level 10, is about as immersion-breaking as you can get.
Justin McElroy said:Dead Island is probably the most realistic recreation of the inevitable and oncoming zombie apocalypse in video game history. It's typified by desperation, sacrifice, frustration, terror and the overbearing sense of hopelessness.
But there's a catch. Though the zombie apocalypse may occasionally be grimly satisfying or fleetingly triumphant when you survive another night, there's one thing it almost certainly won't be.
Fun.
Its story is inane and pointless, yet I found a bonus enemy in the jungle with a hockey mask -- called Jason -- who had a secret chainsaw in his cabin. Dead Island is the kind of game that mercilessly punches you in the gut with one hand and gives you a slice of birthday cake with the other.

A little mixed reactions. Who to believe? Ill still be picking it up.SuperMalo said:

edit: just saw 3/5. Some reviewers need to reevaluate their priorities.
Eurogamer said:I suspect this will be one of those games that will be justifiably mocked by the majority for its many flaws but embraced by a forgiving minority, and passionately defended for its underdog status. Neither response will be entirely wrong. Much like gnawing on human flesh, Dead Island's clumsy horror-action role-player is the definition of an acquired taste.
What did he give it?dogmanstaruk said:After the Nier debacle.
I have never even glanced at what that man thinks of games.
True fact: zombie slaying rapper Sam B is voiced by Marvin from Pulp Fiction.

Much like the moaning corpses that you're destined to spend a lot of time hacking to pieces, Dead Island is a shambling, lurching thing, falling to bits in important areas and frankly a bit whiffy up close. It's also strangely compelling, provided you're a forgiving sort who doesn't flinch at wonky coding and weird design decisions.

Teknoman said:Well there are non-exclusive, non-timed, non-advertising scores that give the game the equivalent of a 7 or an 8 as well. Its a mix of opinions.
Ive played a lot of zombie games in my time, and Dead Island scratched an itch I didnt even know I had. Cooperative undead survival is nothing new to gaming, but exploring a gigantic zombie-infested island with friends is. I easily poured over 40 hours into my playthrough, and a new game plus promises even more entertainment. Rewarding character progression and the vast variety of weapons should appeal to anyone looking for a good time. If youve spent your time planning for the zombie apocalypse, Dead Island is the best option so far to test how long youd last.

Exploration, combat, looting, skills/weapons upgrades, everything in the game is well done and makes it fun to play. Because Dead Island also succeeds in keeping the player in the midst of danger (the game's difficulty is designed to make sure of that), the sense of survival is permanent, which should please the fans of the genre. Definitely a vintage wine.
whatevermort said:I know, I was being difficult. But it definitely feels like the exuberance of the IGN review was somewhat unbalanced when taking in all the other factors (the adverts and exclusivity being the main culprits). Not saying it'll be a bad game - it looks fine - but it doesn't look like a masterpiece.
