Could that be the v-sync? Have you changed the control from analog to digital?
Tried everything out. The stuttering is only there when I play the game with M+KB. I just tried out turning off vsync but it is not the problem.

I switched back to M+KB (more comfortable for me), but the game is lagging/stuttering while turning sometimes. Switching back to controller and the problem is gone. It is not a mousespeed issue as I tried different settings with controller and mouse. :/

edit: Also reached Act II - love it.

check out the first post for a temp fix for that keyboard stuttering issue.

surprised that it wasn't patched yet.

Other than blaming it on batteries for wireless I'm all out of ideas. Sorry man.

Edit: And see above :D

Been going back and forth about buying this game since launch, but just decided that until they add all the graphical options that people have to edit .pak files to change, I'm staying away from this game :(

It's not worth getting VAC banned. Until a Valve employee comes out and says that copying the files in the .pak files to your Documents folder and editing them is totally legit and not VAC-bannable, I just won't believe that it is. "Probably" isn't good enough for my Steam account with ~$2k worth of games on it, with Valve games that I would love to play online still.

It's been confirmed by Valve support and by the Dead Island devs that modifying the files will not get you VAC banned as long as you are not touching the distribution files (copy files to your Documents folder for editing/use). If you are overly concerned about being banned you can also disable VAC when playing multiplayer as long as you always play with people you know.

Got around the PS3 save issue using advice from here... all it took was switching to 3 private slots and no public, still on cooperative.

And, I actually got into a coop game this morning before work... can't wait to get back to it.

Played a few hours with some friends on 360 last night. Plays much better than the PC build.

Game is good fun and definitely hit that Borderlands meets Left 4 Dead meets Dead Rising. Lotta fun. And while the IQ isn't the best, the locations and general design of the game and island are well done.

Ok...so this is pretty annoying.

Since last week I've been trying to play with my cousin (PS3 version btw), we connect fine but eventually, around 30 minutes in a session, the game disconnects. I'm wondering if it's an issue with the game or is it because of a connection issue which I couldn't understand cuz we play other games just fine. Also, it's very weird that we can't see each other on the "Friend" list on the game lobby, we join each other by invites.

So help me out here GAF! I've been loving the game solo so far with a different character but I want to give co-op a try too.

Anyone? :(

On the first island,I only have 2 quests left, one is the very hard refuel and restart the station but I can`t do that one,the big guy in there hits me for half my HP while throwing me on the ground(most annoying animation in a game ever lol) but the other one is the one to find the crashed aircraft, which is not a trackable quest....where the hell is the plane,I can`t find it(even though she says it`s a jumbo jet,not like it`s a needle in a haysack hehe).

You don't find that plane for a couple more acts, so don't even worry about it. Annoyingly, there are a few quests like that (get it in one area, can't complete it until another, game gives no indication as such).

That's simply not possible.

Oh, you mean it plays much better than on your PC?

Calm down Master Race, I am assuming he meant as far as stability goes. I have the 360 version and I have not hit any of the bugs and problems that people have been talking about.

Every Gamestop Manager got a free copy of Dead Island so my SM let me borrow hers. I'm having some fun with it but like Left 4 Dead I feel like the combat is going to get repetitive on me. Also the fetch and retrieve quests burn out fast. Haven't ran into any issues yet.

Well, my friends actually. Not like it's hard to max though. But I said "plays" as in the 3 of us had a blast for a few hours with no bug or problems whatsoever, wasn't talking about IQ.

FFS guys. Grow up.

Dead Island Digital Foundry Faceoff

It's difficult to avoid the conclusion that very little optimisation work has been done on the PC version. Instead Techland looks to have taken the lead from the console versions and tweaked a few things around. We also see that the developer expects the user to control some of the game's options directly via your graphics card's control panel in Windows, rather than in the game itself - manually forcing a higher level of texture filtering, or the enabling of v-sync, etc - which further shows the hurried nature of this conversion. Looking at how the game performs, this almost certainly appears to be the case.

On the console side of things, Sony's system offers up a small lead in image quality, with a sharper presentation and better texture filtering giving the game a mildly clearer look to it. But at the same time it's a real shame that Techland couldn't deliver a suitable level of performance to go along with the slightly better presentation on offer. There's no getting away from the fact that the various issues with heavy frame-rate drops and near continuous screen-tearing more than outweigh the benefits in other areas. In that respect, the Microsoft platform is home to the most consistent gameplay experience, and one that comes with very little cost when it comes down to the overall look of the game. As such, it should be the number one choice for those without a semi-decent PC.

Did that fix your issue? I found mouse movement a bit stuttery as well but went to my 360 controller for smoothness and the analog combat.

The mini map in the lower right corner gives you a breadcrumb trail.

Right I get that, I'm not from Joystiq.

It's just a poorly designed and extremely boring area to deal with, and they've sent me there like 3 times already.

Oohh, ouch.

Yeah, J McElroy's review was very pretentious. Reading it gave me the impression he hated it even before he put the disc in the tray.

Yeah, the lack of an actual map in the sewers,
especially if your dev skull hunting
, can really suck.

Ended up caving in and buying this. PC.

First impressions were terrible. As soon as I booted the game up, even the intro movies started lagging, with sound and frame drops. Cue me sat at my desk holding my head in my hands thinking "WTF have I just spent £30 on".

Game eventually boots up and.. yeah, game is great. It's got an almost B-Movie quality to it in terms of the lack of polish and bugs, but I'm getting a pretty large kick out of the gameplay. Every zombie feels like a threat and it can get pretty intense getting jumped by a couple of zombies without weapons and/or with crap stamina. I think the gamplay will be something of an acquired taste, but I'm enjoying it so far and can see me investing alot of time into it.

The island itself looks beautiful too. The juxtaposition between the idyllic scenery and the walking dead is pretty effective and scary in it's own way too.

How are people playing this on PC? M&KB felt really slow and unresponsive to me so switched to 360 pad, which I never find ideal anymore for first person games. Also using the analogue combat system but think it might take some getting used to.

Beat the game las tight. 35 hrs and lvl like 38+...did every single thing. The hrs count is a little high (I pause a lot and go on the computer)...absolutely loved it. Best game this year thus far. Immediately restarted with the blunt weapons guy.

Who did you play with on your first run through? Just got the game but haven't started playing yet. Who's the best character to play with?

new update for the dead island config tool

UPDATE #8 14/09/2011: New version, we’re up to v1.7 now. No new tweaks, but some significant structural changes and a few bug fixes.

UPDATE #9 14/09/2011: Minor bug fix release, v1.7a. It addressed a crash on program start-up. This would happen if the Dead Island registry settings could not be found.

Smart tweak detection: Dead Island Helper now reads edited files for changes and intelligently sets the enabled / disabled state of each tweak. Now you can see exactly what tweaks you’ve set – even ones you didn’t activate with Dead Island Helper!

Alternate configuration folder option replaced with custom folder selection. Users can now hunt down the exact directory configuration settings are stored. Don’t worry, it still tries to autodetect them if it can

Autodetection of the game’s main directory via the registry
Fixed a bug that would require the user to constantly re-enable the micro-stutter tweak in order for it to work

Added a “Start with Windows” option

Added a “Play Dead Island without intro movies” option. Start the game directly from the Helper! This option will also set Dead Island’s CPU priority to “Normal”

Dead Island Helper now starts on the lowest possible CPU priority setting to minimize any interference with the game while it’s running

This is the only game I've ever purchased where I feel completely justified in thinking I deserve a 100% refund.

Game (at least the PS3 version) should never have been released in its condition.

That said, I'm still playing it, because it's awesome when it works.

I agree, I posted earlier in the thread about how this gen has become ridiculous for this kind of thing, consumers just having to lie back and take unfinished products. If it was a household item or Ipod or something then it'd be all over the news but gamers just have to accept it.

So far I've had these bugs:

cursor randomly jumps about to different items in the inventory menu, this results in you accidentally selling your good items.

Fell through the floor of the world and floated about in blue nothingness for a while.

loaded up my save and, even though I had completed the hotel quest hours ago, it placed me right back in the middle of the hotel when I was supposed to be in the city. It still had the right quest showing, just put me in the wrong location.

Enemies spawn on a rooftop or magically appear right next to you when you're out of reach.

NPC AI leading to them killing themselves for no reason and you failing the quest.

Certain quests freezing and being unable to progress. One part I had to clear an area of zombies but one had spawned inside a building that you could not go into, I had to throw a molotov so that the flames would clip through the walls and kill him on the other side, otherwise the game would've been broken (I loaded it up three times with the same result).

I could go on.

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
Some questions:

Why does the damn retard NPC lead the way on escorts? I think, being the one with the weapons, I should be able to decide where, when, and how fast we progress. It's like the devs looked at escort missions and said, "Man, people really hate these. So how do we make them even worse?".

Ugh.

Next question... why does it keep spawning me in the middle of mobs!!! I have all my progress saved (thank god) but for some reason it keeps dropping me into mobs from like two or three missions back! Why!? The damn textures aren't even loaded up yet and I'm getting rushed by 10+ high lvl Zeds. *You're dead* *loads same exact situation* :/

This game... people keep messaging me on PSN asking if it's any good. I want to recommend it. But I cannot the way things are right now.

Been trying to co-op with a friend for days and it just won't let us. So frustrating.

I actually like that the NPC is leading, makes me not turn around a 100 times and I can watch the surroundings more closely. Plus those escort missions are really easy (until now).

If I could have him/her stop and wait for a moment, I'd be OK with it, I guess... but I play the game carefully and these NPCs are like suicidal. It kind of bothers me. Because escort missions are like the worst thing in gaming to begin with.

P. Gabriel. Sledgehammer. Lol.

The base version is Gabriel's Sledgehammer, and is a quest reward.

Piranha is a hammer/mace weapon mod.

Yes. Go into your Steam settings, go to voice, and change the capture device to something you're not using. Then make sure your Skype is set to your actual microphone device.

many people say that mouse feels bad
Since I fixed the (keyboard) stuttering, it feels really smooth. The only thing is that the cursor speed in the menus is much slower than the view speed. But I can switch sensitivity on the fly with my mouse, so it is not a hassle for me.

I hated that so much. The first time it happened I thought I ran into a glitch and almost started over. I don't know what made Techland think it was a good idea to do that.

Ahhhh,ok thanks, made me explore all the first island I guess hehe...some of the quest are weirdly done,I walked around 10 minutes with fruit cans after I got them from the 2 gas stations because I didn`t see I just had to drop them down in a specific spot, nowhere near the quest giver lol...

May experience has been great so far...no bugs that I can think of aside from slightly stuttering mouse movement, but I fixed that by going to a controller which allows me to use analog combat controls.

Im not playing MP yet either so that may be why I havent had any issues.

My biggest gripe so far is that there is hardly any penalty for dying other than the loss of a little money. A fear of dying in a survival game is a must...but instead when you die, you only lose a bit of money and respawn literally 5 feet away. They shoudl have made it so that you respawn back at your current safehouse at the very least just to make death more of an inconvenience.

Finally made it to Act 3, Act 2 felt like it went on forever. I've only put 19 hours into it so far according to Steam but it feels like I've been playing twice that length because of how much the game drags on to me. Not expecting it to get any better at this point really, it would have to pull a FF-13 where you play 20 hours of garbage and boredom only to get to a mildly more interesting area.
