This one baffles me a bit. I am in the unique position that I built two of the exact same PC with the exact same components, one for me and one for my wife (AMD Phenom II X6 1090T at 3.4GHz with Vapor-X 2GB Radeon 5870 in each machine). This makes it extremely easy to troubleshoot any problems on either PC. The Techland intro video is completely smooth on her PC but it skips and stutters horribly on mine. Benchmarks have show nearly identical performance in the past. *shrug*
I gave up on finding a solution as I prefer running -nologos anyway.
I finished this last night, took 31 hours with roughly a 50/50 split between co-op and singleplayer. Such an awesome game. The last 25% of the game is a bit of a letdown, and it never quite achieves the quality benchmark set by Act II after you head to
the jungle
but there's still a lot to enjoy about it. It's sacrifices openness for narrative development but has some of the most appealing environments and combat encounters which make up for it somewhat.
The story, VA and writing are fantastic if you switch your brain off and remind yourself that this is a playable zombie movie, so all of the characters and plot points are exaggerated to the point of melodrama. Sam B's unrelenting douche-baggery got pretty tiresome though, he really needed more moments where he wasn't acting like an angry street thug. I must admit that the story got surprisingly dark when
Jin was raped by bandits and changed from a naive girl to a broken woman.
I mean, it's a horror game so darkness is expected but that was not a brand of fucked-up I was expecting to encounter in this game.
There are so many incredible things to point out about the game, so I'll just mention a few. The tone of Dead Island is amazing. For the first two acts of the game you are essentially treading water, just trying to get established enough that things don't get any worse. It's not until the third act that things really start to happen, and even then the focus is all on getting the fuck out. Everything you learn about the infection is a side-note. They really nailed the feeling of a world overrun with zombies because of this I reckon, there is a strong sensation of hopelessness created by the fact that most of the quests involve doing things which would be extremely easy were it not for all the zombies trying to eat you.
The locations are unbelievable. If you've ever been to an island nation like Vanuatu then Banoi feels really familiar. I was also surprised to find that most of the indoor locations had that same feeling of authenticity about them, particularly the
police station
in Act II. I know they cheat a lot and use prebaked lights with shadow-maps but I still think Techland deserve credit for how remarkably pretty the game looks. It lacks the visual consistency of a heavy-hitter but there are a lot of places where it all gels and looks stunning.
Crafting is awesome, with a few flaws which don't substantially diminish the experience. The biggest flaw is probably not being able to remove or overwrite a weapon mod. There were times late in the game where I had to put a really amazing weapon in storage because I could only afford to put a weak mod on it. If you could overwrite mods then the common recipes would remain useful for the whole game since they can be used as temporary weapon enhancers until you can afford a better mod. The other issues I had with crafting were all UI based, like not being able to make multiple instances of the same item in one sweep.
The co-op system is far and away the most impressive thing about this game. The way it tracks character, inventory and story progress seems specifically designed to minimise annoyance. Rather than putting roadblocks up to stop you from playing how you want to play the game just says "go nuts!" If you want to pull a friend into a high-level game and power-level them you can do it, and if you want to help a lower-level friend you can do that too while still earning XP and loot. I think it's fair to say that when it works as intended it works extraordinarily well. The moment my buddy turned in a quest which put us both at the same point in the story and a little message popped up which said "hey you're progressing now btw" I giggled with glee.
Combat is of course amazing, analog all the way. Well actually I did turn on digital for a brief stretch during
the prison gauntlet run to the elevator roof
but it made things harder since I was using an axe at that point, and they swing really slowly. I was playing Purna so it was a mix of guns and blades for me. Guns are weird, they're actually really well balanced but a gun without a mod is basically useless since the critical damage lacks stopping power. At the end of the game I had a flame-spitting shotgun which could one-shot thugs with a critical head shot, an electrified rifle for picking off stragglers before engaging a group and an electrified heavy pistol for popping infected as the rushed me. Even then I found that my unique axe and machete were better for most situations. The enemies were good though somewhat lacking in imagination and originality. I liked the fact that you could still get overwhelmed by walkers and especially infected at the end of the game.
So much more I could say, but I think I'd rather get back to my NG+ run. Bring on Dead Island 2, and use CryEngine 3. Polish the interface until it sparkles, and sort out the inventory and co-op bugs. Game of the Forever.

so which character is the most fun to use? Sam looks the most practical but also the most boring
Finally made it to Act 3, Act 2 felt like it went on forever. I've only put 19 hours into it so far according to Steam but it feels like I've been playing twice that length because of how much the game drags on to me. Not expecting it to get any better at this point really, it would have to pull a FF-13 where you play 20 hours of garbage and boredom only to get to a mildly more interesting area.
I'd suggest just going through the main missions if that is the case. It isn't like the side missions are really necessary so why bother being stuck in the same location until it gets old.

Just pick them all up anyway. Most of the side-quests involve doing things in areas which are really close to a main objective, or if not close you can pass them on the way to one. For example there are several in the
I picked the rapper (is that Sam?) because the intro movie sold me on his ridiculous rap. Also there's just something awesome about swinging a baseball bat at a zombie's head!!
I'd think the most boring character would be the one who uses guns. I wanted to not used guns in a first-person game for a change, myself.

Half her combat tree is blades. The problem is that there comes a time when every character will need to start packing heat, she's just not terrible at it like the others. That said, you could exclusively spec for blades and stamina if you wanted to.
Logan is great if you want to throw weapons. Little blades and knives are great for him, but he can also throw all the other weapons like a champ. His "Boomerang" perk has them return to you 50% of the time once maxed. A nice boon if you're not using the weapon dupe.
I'm using Xian too. Love her. But I have to say, did the developers not realize that there is no way in hell that a woman can do what she does throughout the entire game in high heels? I mean come on, heels are the first thing any respectable cool chick would ditch. It's like the developers are uber-nerds.

I'm not getting stuttering, but I did notice last night that I got a noticeable framerate increase when using controller over M+K. It was almost a solid 60 with a controller most of the time. Thought that was odd.
It's particularly funny because stomping has a really insane damage modifier, I assume because it tells the damage system to instant kill the enemy. I was playing with her and my co-op buddy started laughing uncontrollably. I asked him why and he replied "you just got a 60k stilletto heel crit".
You open harder crates... personally I have lockpicking 2 and I've only found good shit in the normal lvl 1 crates. My two gold weapons came from reg crates. But I'm not terribly far in the game yet.
Well, my friends actually. Not like it's hard to max though. But I said "plays" as in the 3 of us had a blast for a few hours with no bug or problems whatsoever, wasn't talking about IQ.
FFS explain what you mean, then. "Plays well" generally refers to performance in my experience.
Also, what kind of bugs have you been experiencing on the PC version? I bought the game a few days after release and haven't experienced any bugs in my 15+ hours. It's an extremely smoothly running client and getting co-op going is simple.
I have everything turned off except for health which fades in/out appropriately anyway (I really wish they just made a toggle to turn the HUD off/on or a modder could figure it out). Radar/minimap quest navigation is the only thing I miss but I play coop and my wife handles the quest navigation so I'm good for now. Just started Act II.

FUCK Joseph, really.
That escort mission is truly pissing me off, also because the game once started going like 5fps after i died... (i'm playing it on 360).
This mission sucks terribly bad, the AI is pure crap.
2 hours in, worst game ive played this gen on ps3 at least.
never seen so much screen tearing, pop up and stutter in a game. Feels like a pre alpha build. The sidequest is more like glitchquest and the combat isnt intuitive at all.
Thank you sir. You may have just convinced me to buy it.
That's what I was looking for. Straight from the horse's mouth that it's not bannable.
EDIT: Yep. Just bought it. $38 on GMG with a coupon code and my $5 voucher. Also hopped on the Amazon Space Marine deal for $40. My wallet fucking hates me right now.

Set to single player or coop w/lan instead of psn. Not sure if the stuttering is a byproduct of the nearby system, but it seems extremely frequently with psn on. You're stuck with the screen tearing though.

Alright, so I finally beat the game with 2 friends today, clocked in 40 hours and got to level 38 with Sam B. I really enjoyed the game but now I have to ask if anyone is having this issue or has heard of this. I didn't see this anywhere else in the thread so I will ask now.
I finished the game with 71 of 72 locations found but the personal stats show that I have 100% location zones found...what gives? I have the game on the 360.
Anyone else have this? It's somewhat frusturating.

thats seems to improve the frame rate, thanks. Still not enjoying the combat at all. Just feels sloppy. All movement in this game feels sloppy actually. Not really enjoying the sidequest either, they feel badly put togther as well with bugs to boot. Glad i decided to rent this before buying the pc version.
What the fuck is with the shit Australian accents? Is it only in the Australian version or is everyone suffering these horrific attempts? Is there a way I can change these?
