Dead or Alive 5 |OT| Put a little bounce in your sidestep!

I don't really like relying on magazines/websites for fighting game reviews, generally the genre is a pretty niche thing to understand.

most published reviews only really give you a base opinion on the game's casual appeal... and most of the time single player content. ie: stuff I don't really give two shits for.

I have zero faith in edge reviews, theyve been all over the place and never line up with what i would give a game

Hell, they gave ridge racer unbounded a 9, ssx a 5, like what

lol Edge gave SFxT a 9 because to whoever their fighting game guy is, it's just like SF4 but with more characters. For a long time Edge has gone on about how SF4 is the best SF game of all time, probably the best fighting game, etc.

In other words it's the game someone around their office can actually beat people at.

They gave MvC3 a 7; generally any other fighting games lower scores as well, I thought.

Dead or Alive Dimensions>>>> Dead or Alive 6 according to Edge (Dimensions got a 7)

PREORDER CANCELLED will play the superior game.

So Edge apparently gave DoA5 the same score of Resident Evil: Revelations...

What do i have to do for european retailers to sell new releases on tuesday?

Keeping Friday but a week before the americans would be an acceptable compromise.

When we learned the game was rated M I thought that was retarded. Then I saw Lisa's Legend mode "swimsuit". Pictures do not do tell the whole story.

It's a hair away from softcore porn.

Same! Hope it arrives Saturday so I can officially Join this weekends Tournament[/QUOTE]
Which reminds me, 9 spots left. ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ

GameStop texted me and no midnight release for my store. Either way, I have class and won't be able to pick it up until 6:30. Hopefully I can play at least an hour of the game.

Stopped reading after the review said, "de(master)bate." A person who says that will have nothing to say that I would care about.

Read her negatives lol

(-) Punch, Kick - Only two attack buttons? Granted, attacks are varied according to the direction of the stick, and combination of buttons, but still... two, attack, buttons...
(-) Not competetion ready - simplistic 1v1 fighters usually don't do well in the competetive scene.

and on the comments section she wrote this piece of magic.

I don't know if i can agree with you on the DOA and VF comparison though -- Tekken is much more technical than DOA, so I'd say that Tekken is more similar to VF than DOA. For this reason, people will either like DOA or Tekken more, up to the person. But you're definitely right, DoA is more "flashier" in it's presentation, which I believe isn't a bad thing at all. I'm sure you're going to enjoy the game :)
Girl VF and Dead or Alive way more in common even if DOA isn't as technical heavy as VF.

While Tekken has a button for each limb -- the usefulness of the skil set of the characters in tekken is at 50%.
Most of the depth in VF comes from sabaki's, counter hit options, movement, option selects, frame traps, the throw system, Open/closed stance, the oki game, and even how blocking works.
Is Tekken technical? Absolutely, more so than Capcom's fighters (my opinion), but Tekken still doesn't come close to VF.
I guess part of your question is even though DoA5 has 2 strike buttons, hows it less technical than VF?
For one, there's no real hit stun property on block to any of the moves in DoA. It can be a quick strike, or a charge-heavy blow, all there's to consider is the recovery of the attack.
Secondly since all moves have no stun properties on block, there's no strategy in stringing a combo specifically to trap a turtle-player.
Thirdly, the sheer amount of move variety depending on recovery of a crouch, to a side, rear, or forward stance for most the characters in VF just overshadows DoA5 in terms of the amount of different moves you can perform.
Competetive players can try an make this a competetive game (and i'm sure it'll be in some tournaments), but my guess is that it won't have much legs once the calander runs.

Which reminds me, 9 spots left. ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ

I count 6 people on the tourney list (10 left) unless you are participating and haven't added yourself that is :p

I'm yet to reach that part - still reading - but dismissing the game's competitive merits because of only 2 strike buttons when VF never had a problem with this... and mentioning the lack of aerial movement when when can move around the floor more freely than you can in any 2D game as a reasonable alternative in a 3D environment...

I've hated the fact that the game's reputation's been revolving around the girl's breats for years, but I laughed at this scene - at least they're having some fun with it, while the story mode mostly disregards that aspect, if you subract this scene and Lei Fang's at the subway.

I like the fact the game didnt take itself too seriously with the story. Otherwise it would have been boring and forgettable. (IMO) Those humor touches add personality and quirkiness to the story and overall makes it more enjoyable. Its not OMG best story ever but its kinda of a its so bad its awesome.

EDIT: NightAntilli is going hard on those comments on that review LOL

you know, I can't really be mad at this review. She obviously loved the game and even if she has no clue about competitive fighters that's ultimately the important part.-

she gets really defensive in the comments when someone tells her it's a bullshit review. i don't think she really gave the game much of a chance to be honest.

imo, the worst part of the story is the part where they tried to be semi serious - aka the ninja plot.

Overall though it's enjoyable and i vastly prefer this to the previous arcade format.

The Ninja semi serious plot had a few cool scenes but yeah the non ninja plots are more enjoyable. I did love the ending of the game.

she's obviously not a competitive player. However she states multiple times she really enjoyed playing the game.

I don't know why she felt the need to include the competitive vs casual angle as she clearly has no clue about the competitive side.

The scene with Brad and Eliot messing with each other over food is on par with anything from a Jackie Chan film - then again, there was something similar in Kung Fu Panda.

That scene with trapped Hayate, however, felt a bit pointless, unless those light thingies are supposed to allow him to be copied or something in the future, opening the possibility of an ein return, which some people really seem to crave.

The fake battle start in the crashing train was a nice touch too - the way some scenes tied into others you'd see in some other character's path and you can pretty much tell how the actual tournament developed was a nice touch. Reminds me of my experience with Dissidia.

I am so excited. Not going to able to play it until after work tomorrow but at least I got the CE. Going pick up a Brawl Pad too. DOA5 is going be the first fighting game I really try to get into since SCIV.

They might have probably used that to later clone him but I doubt they managed to get that far with Hayate.

I really like how they tied things up on the story.

I wonder if Lisa survived

Costumes are definitely a bit "meh" all around, but it makes sense to me that they'll save the cool stuff for DLC. That's just the way it is.

What's the word on the net code?

I have a CE pre-ordered at GameStop, but I'm giving serious thought to just getting a copy from Best Buy instead; I have Reward Zone coupons to burn and funds are kinda tight after upgrading my cell phone last week. I'm debating if the soundtrack, art book and swimsuits really mean that much to me. It's either I spend $75 picking up my pre-order, or $10 buying it outright at BB. Decisions, decisions.
