I haven't played either one but have heard that the loss of the pressure-sensitive buttons for the second game hurt it - was there other mechanical changes to make it worse than the first?

Well there was also the issue where it seemed like your partner was taking under-the-table payments to deliberately drop 1 or 2 points per game (costing the player tens of thousands in Zack bucks each time). Going 7-0, which was important to make any decent progress, basically meant cutting your AI partner out of the match and playing it 2 vs 1.
