Deathsmiles |OT| 360 Cave STG

I didn't. I played the original arcade mode, where you at least have to follow the rank rules. The 1cc is the main draw for me in arcade games, and it was definitely a little disappointing, but there's still stuff to do outside of the plain old 1cc, of course.

You won't be 1ccing mega black label 1.0 or 1.1 on level 999 difficulty very easily, unless you're a shoot em up god.

That's what I hear. EOJ was saying that MBL is the significantly better game, anyway, so

might buy this today actually

Exists in a perpetual state of Quantum Crotch Uncertainty.
So my package containing this game just arrived. Prominently displayed on the back of the box in large font is the phrase "Death smiles at us all. Lolis smile back."

First question: Is this the first time an American game company has explicitly used the word "loli" in an official capacity? On the packaging, no less?

Second question: Is discretion well and truly dead amongst niche video game publishers?

Third question: Have we truly reached a point where one cannot buy a shmup without a pervasive and persistent feeling of mortification?

The answer to questions two and three is yes; they are rhetorical. Question one is genuine. I want to know if Aksys deserves this entirely dubious honor.

the box had deathsmiles art and the words "loli" and "shmup"

not a box i'm proud to own, but yeah, I just got the game. MBL seemed cool from the one credit I played, but the GF's trying to 1cc arcade mode now.

I'm guessing the differences between MBL Arcade and MBL 360 are the same as vanilla Arcade vs Vanilla 360? Pretty much the same but with high res art and less strict rank requirements? I don't get why they removed the rank requirements from high res mode, shit's weak.

Faceplate matches my Elite quite well (much better than the Eternal Sonata plate with Salsa and March on it...).

Now if only I could find some goddamned time to PLAY the effing thing...

I'm not into this loli thing at all but I love me some shmup. I bought it at Gamestop today and sold the faceplate to the female clerk. Not for the store, she wanted it for herself. It was just a few dollars but I was going to throw it away. I barely got a chance to play so far but what I have played is so awesome. It might make me import some of the other cave shooters that aren't being released here.

Espgaluda II Faceplate is better. ;P Got my copy, and it's going to be sitting on the shelf for a long time.

It most certainly is.

This is what I'm thinking. This is the first Cave shooter I've played. Not top-notch, but I can at least see the talent at work. Makes me think that a game like Mushihimesama Futari might be worth importing.

Now if I could just find a spare $80 sitting around...

I got my (undamaged) Gamestop copy in the mail today. The box is a lot smaller than I thought it was going to be. It looked like a Guitar Hero sized-box when I looked at pictures without anything to scale it to.

:lol same here.

I'm glad though, I don't need another ridiculously sized game box filling up whatever shelf space I've got left. If only I weren't so compulsive about keeping all my game packaging =P

I'm loving this game so far. I've been playing this game on rank 1 (easy modo) and having a blast. The one-two punch of jitterbug and tyrannosatan is alot though. Anyone got any tips on how to beat either of those two?

For jitterbug's last form: use lock shot, it's easier then trying to follow him as he flies across the screen, and you can focus on bullets.
For tyrannosatan: bomb like hell!

I forgot how much fun 1.1 is in this. It's pretty much the only mode I like to play now. You can really fill the screen with suicide bullets and it just seems way more satisfying.

I don't like how in original you automatically go into power up mode when you use lock-on at full counter. At least 1.1 gives you the option to still lock-on without starting power up mode. Unless I'm doing it wrong.

I'm still trying to get all these versions straight, but don't you need to use a standard 360 controller for 1.1 (using the right stick to control your familiar)?

picked this up last night :) pretty damn fun, I can see myself getting a lot out of this game, even if it seems like a glorified XBLA title. rocking the faceplate and listening to the OST at work now :D

Why, because it's 2D?

Anyone able to explain the leaderboards? I can't tell if they're jacked up or what.

--Some of the modes only have a few players listed, and others listed in the top 20 have scores well below my own.

--I can't find any way to track my own high scores.

--What's the difference between selecting "play" and "score attack" in the main menu? I usually play on "score attack" because I assume that's the mode that tracks scores. But no luck so far, even on regular "play" mode.

Is there something I'm missing, or is score tracking seriously messed up?

Just selecting 'play' you will not be able to add your score to the leaderboard.

Score Attack doesn't let you continue and will add your score to the leaderboard.

When you look at the leaderboard make sure to toggle EX stages on/off. Your scores were probably with the EX stage off and that's why you aren't seeing your name.

Are some of these achievements bugged? I'm missing achievements for defeating a few of the bosses but I've blown through the game more than a few times at this point. Seems weird.

Turn off voices, and don't modify the other default settings. Also play in 360 or Arcade mode. Mega Black Label has it's own too so to unlock those you have to use that version of the game. I guess they didn't really spend time fixing the voice bug?

KOF XIII IS THE BEST
I found the time and attention to get this... XD

I guess my first official modern CAVE shooter... last thing I played close to this was Triggerheart Excel!

At any rate, tis very fun. Love this music, thanks for sounding so Castlevania-ish! Wonderfully Arcadey. About to beat my first wussy arcade run, with a buster 360 Controller with an over-sensative Analog Pad (you can imagine my pain!)... Next run, it's time to burst out the TE stick, and really dive in!

A combination of the enthusiasm of people like the ones in this thread, and my desire to support smaller games with my purchases, rather than the same big sellers everyone else gets, led me to this game (and the nice LE box didn't hurt either!), so i have to extend my thanks to the CAVE fans! :D

So far, I'd imagine it'd feel MUCH more awkward to play OH-TO-MO-DI-E-SU... G! than this... XD Still have to raise a brow to certain character choice in the sequel...

I finally smacked down Jitterbug and sent Tyrannosatan back to extinctionhell today. Turns out that playing all level 1's on Xbox mode is not much easier than standard arcade mode with ranking rules. I ended up clearing both today. Here's a few more tips for the last two bosses:

Don't bomb on Jitterbug. If you beat him without bombing you get 2 lives. It's worth it not to bomb even if you die once or twice. Also, I like to go into the Jitterbug battle with 1,000 on the counter. Then you can activate and bring him down quickly. That should give you enough lives to bombspam Tyrannosatan. I'm not particularly proud of bomb spamming, but hey, it gets the job done.

Got my copy from gamestop.com and was surprised it came in a box, after the delivery confirmation said it was sent first class. Whew.

They're just finicky. Like the poster above said, they only unlock in certain modes. Some will unlock in any mode, most won't (and it doesn't say anywhere which is which).

I also noticed that I didn't get one of the character-specific game-ending achievements because I skipped watching the dumb post-game narrative sequence. Grrr.

Cool. That's the answer I was looking for.

I'm glad this game is so great in including all these different play modes on disc, but it also leads to all these weird unexplained requirements in the leaderboards and achievements.

My copy came in just a few hours ago. ^_^

Narrowly avoided looking like a complete dork when a girl at work asked what I ordered on Amazon. She was like "What'd you get, anything good?" I was just like "nahhhh, nothing interesting" then she got distracted by the cream of wheat box on my desk and forgot about it. BURETTO DODGE

Thanks for the tips on Jitterbug and Tyrannosatan. I've just about got the rest of the game down to 1 continue but then I hit those guys and it's light out. It doesn't help that I also keep forgetting to use the lock-shot! Doh!

And I definitely prefer the stick in 360 mode (havent tried 1.1 yet). It's much more precise than the 360 control pad, especially if you've got a stick with a Seimitsu in it. The HRAP Pro SE was positively MADE for games like this and it's my default stick on the 360 for Mushihimesama, Icaruga, Raystorm HD and now Deathsmiles. If you enjoy SHMUPS (and if you're reading this thread then I assume that you do) then you owe it to yourself to invest in a good arcade stick.

Oh and as awesome as Tyrannosatan is his background music is even better. It sounds like Toccatta and Fugue in D Minor although I haven't listened close enough to tell if it is or is just an homage to that incredible piece of music. Anyway, awesome game. Thanks Aksys and please bring more Cave games over!

EDIT- Just went and looked at the soundtrack track listing and unless my Katakana is off that boss music definitely says Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor. How awesome is that!

Ugh I got sooo close to 1ccing the original arcade mode. I got to the final Tyranodinothing with 3 lives and full thing of bombs. Got him down to less than half an inch of life and I game overed. Bah. I can't believe I got wrecked so hard and that was pretty much my best playthrough; getting to him with all those lives and bombs.

Back to square one...maybe after work.. :(

Argh, I managed to start the last level with nearly full health and no continues before I made some stupid manoeuvres which cost me my chance at a 1cc. Oh well, I'll try again later!

Thanks for the heads up regarding voices and achievements. I don't think I've missed any achievements yet, but since the voices are starting to annoy me, this is a good excuse to turn them off. :lol

Got this today. Managed to get 39 of 50 achieves without messing with any voice settings or anything, as said before read the descriptions carefully, the game is really picky about what mode you're playing on to get certain achievements.

Finally got this today from Amazon and played for a good 4 hours or so. I'm actually surprised by how much I'm enjoying this game, since I normally don't care for horizontal shooters. So far I've 1CC'd it with Rosa; she seems to be far and away the best character. I messed up my scoring pretty badly on the run where I completed it though, so my highscore is still only 72 millionish with a game over on Jitterbug. Going to try and fix that tomorrow. :D
