Would this be digital purchase only?
Probably the Fortnite & Roblox kids

Plus people using subscriptions or upgrading from PS4 .

But wait how would they know this?

Because people could buy games & play offline

But I'm guessing they're basically saying they have proof of 65 million PS5 owners buying games so it's less than 15 million who haven't.

That's weird. Why would you buy a PS5 and never buy a game?

15 million is not a small number, either. That's roughly 1 out of every 5 consoles.

Doesn't make sense to me.

"15 Million of PS5 owners has never purchased a game"

Is this 15 million PS5 owners have not spent money on a game (but might play free 2 play only games)

OR

15 Million PS5 owners have not downloaded a game PERIOD, be it paid or free 2 play games.

This is not about physical copies, is in general.
Well there definitely is some people who only play the f2p games. Also they maybe just keep playing the games they already purchased on ps4. Even if they don't buy games lots of those people spend money on in-game purchases. I know someone with a ps5 that only plays fortnite but they spend a good amount of money in-game.

Sometimes I wonder if you guys really want to discuss videogames or are here just for the console-warring bait.

I am not really surprised to be honest. Quite a few of my friends have kids who pestered their parents to get a PS5 because everybody in school talks about it. They got them the console and never bought any games for it, because they just play Fortnite.

I'm pretty sure it's just stupid data that's being used in an instrumental way to push digital/subscriptions.

No other explanation. Unless there's 15M consoles totally, always offline.

Or it's the Fortnite kids. ALL OF THEM. xD

That sounds about right. Between shipped consoles not yet sold and the amount of PS5 serving as Fortnite, Marvel Rivals, Apex Legends, Genshin Impact etc machines its what i expected.

Sony still makes the bucks from MTX anyway. Not that surprising.

Talk to gen z and see what they are playing. Most if them never bought an AAA single player game.

Not surprised if true. Some gamers will go sub plan or F2P.

It's like music on their smartphone. How many people still buy albums or even $1 songs? Most people will do sub plans or listen to free podcasts.

Even if playing offline, physical copy, it still has to activate the license, so whenever the console goes online, the data would be collected.

It's likely a mix of F2P gamers and Subscription only gamers.

Astrobot was the only 1 of the 4 games I purchased that I really liked.
Forbidden West, Ragnarok, Rivet and Clank, were all disappointing.
I managed to not buy Spider 2 before boxing up the PS5 and trading it in.

Technically not true but people are going to sign in just to get the patches. I keep my PS5 offline otherwise.

The UI when online on PS5 is actually very busy. I don't like it.

https://www.demandsage.com/fortnite-statistics/

  • Fortnite has over 650 million registered players.

  • 78% of Fortnite players prefer to play the game on a console.

  • 46.8% of Fortnite's overall revenue was generated from PlayStation 4 from March 2018 to July 2020. At the same time, Xbox One contributed towards the generation of 27.5% of the game's revenue. Besides, the remaining 18.7% of revenue share was generated by Nintendo Switch, Android, and PC.

Toss in other games like Genshin Impact, etc. and it isn't hard to conclude that there really are people out there that buy a console for these F2P games. Sony financials show that these games still bring in $$ for them.

I know we older people like to poop on this but the more I think about it, it isn't much different than people that are dedicated to MMOs and sports games and only buy/build systems for those games.

How is this site coming to this conclusion? I see they say "Curiously, of the entire console fleet, the ratio of PS5 users who don't even buy games is 0.175 , which corresponds, based on the calculations, to 14 million consoles in total." but I can't find any references to this in the document linked to.

That raito doesn't even make sense to me. What is the 0.175 referring to?

According to the last Sony financial report around 15 Million of PS5 owners has never purchased a game.

"Of course, while the total figure is round and resounding, there is one detail that stands out: of the 80 million consoles sold, less than 15 million correspond to hardware for which no game has been purchased"

I've owned a PS5 since last summer and I purchased my first games for it about 2 months ago, Resident Evil 7/8 double pack for $20. Otherwise I've mostly used it for Fortnite and my PS4 backlog.

The Power of F2P gaming. Willing to bet that all the other platforms have sizeable swathes of the userbase that behave similarly.

I guess it can happen. I originally bought my 360 for Final Fantasy XI, and for a couple of years only used it for that. People may do similar things for F2P games today.

But, I get the feeling this isnt taking fully into account people with only physical games.
