Destiny 2 Edge of Fate Pre-orders Are Down Nearly 50% From The Final Shape.

Houston we have a problem. Expansion is out 15th July.

Destiny 2's next big expansion, Edge of Fate, is just a few weeks away, launching on July 15, 2025. This expansion kicks off the new "Year of Prophecy" and adds some fantastic changes, including the Portal, a new gear tiering system, armor stats overhaul, non-linear campaign, and more. This is also the start of Destiny 2's new content delivery structure, with a free major update in between each expansion release.

Reddit user Testifye shared a data-driven comparison between pre-orders for Edge of Fate and The Final Shape earlier today, using publicly available stats from Warmind.io, a popular Destiny 2 stat-tracking site. While not official numbers from Bungie, the data offers one of the clearest glimpses at preorder trends we've got right now.

To track preorder numbers, Testifye looked at the number of Destiny 2 accounts that have unlocked the unique pre-order emblems tied to each expansion: "External Sights" for Edge of Fate, and "Paracausal Path" for The Final Shape.
Because these emblems are tied directly to purchasing the expansions, they work as a fairly consistent way to monitor preorder interest over time. The Reddit user automated this tracking process and has been collecting data daily since March 2024, storing it in a database.

That Bungie acquisition paying off.

I caught a bit of the stream the other day and well, yeah enough said.

This is what's left of the Lightfall team, at best.

Lightfall completely fucked this franchise over.
True, but they got the audience back mostly for the Final Shape. I just think the majority of the old players that have been with them since the start are done regardless. Like me for example.

I hate that Bungie was so successful with Destiny. A lot of broken promises and potential that never were made good on. Tried really hard to like it (the gunplay feels great, the visual design is great, the story had promise)... but fuck, man. Bungie really fucked that whole thing up with the lack of content, the inability to service a live-service game properly, and how they fucked the story. Destiny 2 was even worse, but at least it didn't try to pretend to be something it wasn't. Shame that Bungie repeated the same mistakes in an even worse manner.

Destiny 1 and 2 were among my biggest gaming disappointments of all time.

At least they've made good on their "We're gonna be the next Star Wars" statement. Both Destiny and Star Wars are now together in the same garbage bin.

Sony bought bungie in Q1 2022. By the time delayed marathon comes out (probably Q1 2026), it will be literally 4 years of bungie just doing Destiny 2 DLC.

And unless a miracle happens and marathon becomes a big hit after all the adjustments, it will flop.

And Pete parsons got $3.6B out of sony for this.

He's a pro at this. He's like that master sports agent who can get even cruddy players a giant contract. Everyone knows it's a waste of money when it's announced. But somehow he pulled it off.

just give me a decent single player game, ideally inspired by the first halo. Enough of those products targeting addicts.

i have played wow for years back in the days, and i have stopped, not losing my life again at crack gaming.

Plenty of studio's make those types of games. Bungie has not done that for over ten years I don't think they will start now.

I can recommend the new Doom or the Titanfall 2 campaign if you haven't played it, its fabulous.

Having played thousands of hours of Destiny 1, I'm not sure why anyone gave them a chance with Destiny 2. Never been a dev I felt hated their players more than Bungie did/does. Once Destiny 1 was all over, I never looked back and never touched Destiny 2.

D2 started out fucking terrible but Forsaken was some peak Destiny. Arguably THE peak.

But yeah its toast now, just a matter of time

I think a lot of people - like you and I - Used Final Shape as a jumping off point. A lot of us just wanted to see how this whole thing would end. I tried playing some of the seasonal stuff after Final Shape, and it was just retreading old ground.

They need to jump this story a few hundred years into the future. Or a few hundred light years away from our solar system. Get weird with it. What creepy crawlies came out of the woodwork after The Witness died?

And some people said there is no such thing as permanent franchise damage. atleast not without putting tremendous time and money to dig out of the hole.

2025 probably will be the first ever year when Destiny might not come in Top12 by gross revenue on Steam.

I will honestly be excited again if a giant time skip occurs.
Probably will save for Destiny 3 in around 10 years.

I used to be a big-time Destiny player. But my interest eventually waned because the loot treadmill was too tedious to keep coming back to.

I wouldn't mind more Destiny in the future, but not right now.

I jumped back in after years to play the Final Shape and it was fun. The rest of the game is just built to psychologically addict you. And it looks like with the new update they reset a lot of progress. So I'm out.

Final Shape was fantastic. But it also should've been the end of D2. We should have been getting a D3 this year or next year, not another expansion to a decade old game.

I mean, that's not an accurate way to track anything.

People pre-order the new expansions for the weapons etc then cancel it. More so on xbox where you don't pay immediately for pre orders. But the same is also possible on PC & PlayStation. You just don't get a cash refund on playstation.

You can also account share the pre order Bonus. I did it for TFS with my mate on PS5 when I refused to buy it.

So numbers could be even worse. More so with how much Bungie are getting shit on in forums, reddit etc for how lackluster the dlc looks and it appearing that the dlc is going to be mega bare bones.

Quite frankly, they deserve to go down in flames for how they've treat the Destiny fanbase & the whole Art Raiders fiasco.

Fuck em.

Yeah same.

Only a D3 would bring me back at this point. There's only so much grinding for slightly different guns and returning exotics you can do.

They lost me when they abandoned PVP but I still came back to see it off. When this game was good, it was really fucking good.

If this DLC flops and Marathon flops, there might never be a Destiny 3, ever.

Some of my favourite gaming memories were in Destiny raids, so I hope they can get back to that at some point. I'm also fine moving on for now.

Our first Atheon take down involved me as last man standing with that purple LMG. Nothing like it in gaming.

Good times.

They need to just move on to Destiny 3, keep crucible as a seperate client entirely as a F2P thing. Least then we can have actual fun exotics to chase and use in PvE instead of worrying about them being balanced for the sake of a side-mode.

They stopped giving a shit about PVP a very long time ago.

I checked out after Beyond Light. I had had enough and the writing was on the wall that it was never really going to get any better. Peak D2 for me was Forsaken and it just went downhill after that. One of my friends tried to convince me to come back right after Lightfall released and I tried but everything was such a mess that I felt completely lost catching up with all the crap they had done.

A shame, really, because I have a lot of fond memories of Destiny 1, despite all its warts. Especially the raids. If they released a 60 fps upgrade to D1, I'd go back to playing it.

The story wrapped up. Let it go.

If it isn't destiny 3, or a new IP (see not marathon), then you're done.

Bungie closed down in 2-3 years tops. Calling it.

I bet Sony thought they had it in the bag when they got this studio.

They weren't the only ones.

Now before we get all crazy, the final shape was the end of the story and people really wanted to see the end. Not really a fair comparison. Maybe compare it to all the other expansions

Also, they are trying something new so people are probably waiting a bit to see if they have righted the ship.

I think it's likely that it's bad news but let's wait and see.

They haven't righted shit. One raid and one dungeon for the entire year? They need to rework the whole game at this point and do a fresh drop. Destiny 1 had the right cadence. New release and two and a half expansions. Rinse repeat. Now in year what year 7 or 8 now the are just rehashing the rehashed rehash.

The Quality of life updates, which come free a anyway, are way more appealing than the actual new content. What did Bungo think would happen?
