Destiny Reveal Thread

Reminds me of the original design for New Mombassa from the 2003 Halo 2 demo.

The concept has me interested and the concept art looks amazing, but the lack of gameplay footage is concerning. It sounded like a giant waste of time for all the media that was invited to the reveal. The cynical side of me thinks this was all just a way to drum up pre-order sales through media hype while playing it way too safe to not scare off any potential pre-orders.

At best it seems like they didn't want to scare off any pre-order sales and they are saving gameplay footage/trailers for E3/next-gen console announcements, at worst it screams of lack of confidence in the product or a troubled development. (Hopefully not), especially considering it's been in development for so long.

Again, I'm hyped, but I can't walk away from the coverage without feeling skeptical. The fact that they deliberately did shy away from the word MMO makes me think they don't want to scare off potential buyers given the current failings of the MMO market in recent years.

If the game is not a commercial success is Bungie in trouble?

any developer is in trouble these days if their game isn't a commercial success, specially something like this that looks like a huge long term investment. I don't think Activision or Bungie pull out that easily if the first game fails to sell their expected numbers (5-6m) though, and Bungie owns their property still there is a lot of money from Activision in this, if they decide to pull out like how the contract allows them to, I imagine there will be troubles.

with that said, I don't think this would be commercial failure, look at Borderlands sales, this sounds far more appealing and broader than that. looks like a safe investment and with huge marketing push it will have that sales target seems easy enough.

At very first glance I thought, ehh - looks like Halo.
But when I read that little bullet point list of features in the OP, it definitely sounds very interesting.

Hate to say I called the no screenshots thing, but I called it.

At least it looks more moody and interesting than I was expecting, but very lame to not show the engine. They didn't adjust to the amount of leaked material at all.

Getting some flashbacks of Halo2 and how it had next-gen online features compared to every other Xbox1 title. Parties and Matchmaking became a staple of the next generation of consoles. Remember that weird online tease in Watch_Dogs as well? I'm guessing we're gonna see a lot of this augmented single player/co-op/MP amalgamation in the next 5 years.

Actually, that Polygon article Nirolak linked does an amazing job of describing the game. That has got me more hyped than anything, but I just hope they can pull it off. I really hate when developers promise the world, but don't actually show the game. If they pull it off it sounds amazing, but I really wish they had just shown more of the game (outside of the few seconds of gameplay) to back up some of their claims.

I will say that skybox looks pretty amazing in the few seconds it was shown in the Vidoc.

Interesting concept. So long as everyone else agrees not to constantly bounce around the environments like Tigger this time, I'm in.

anyone else creeped out that this guy keeps "My body is" set to paste at all times on his phone...

Most likely edited to keep that segment short. Or it could be a text expansion that they set in the iphones settings.

I mean, hey, sometimes 'my body is' not ready.

Like for the Half Life 3 announcement at Wednesday's Sony event.

You got to be prepared for these things.

So it's 'always online' but not an MMO? Is that a fancy way of saying this has restrictive DRM? Or am I misunderstanding?

Also, while the game looks nice, is it just me or is already have pre-orders up a little...arrogant?

Still interested, but the footage didn't really grab me. It was pretty, sure, but I'm not exactly sure about gameplay. Will keep an eye on it for a while anyway.

Single-player is a valid option so I am good.

But 360/PS3 only or also next-gen?

Definitely both. In fact, I think once they are allowed to talk about next gen they are going to push those versions even more than the 360/PS3 versions. Bungie is definitely in an awkward spot, seeing as that they're one of the first to announce a cross gen game, so we'll have to wait and see how they handle it.

It depends how the release window for the next gen version pans out, but I might have to hold out for next gen. Or just double dip.

I dont think so, i think it's always online to deal with the structuring of content.

Their goal is to have fluid engagement. If new things happen, if new events happen, if you want to join a group, play singleplayer, play co-op, if you want to play pvp, its all the same universe, no switching or leaving the game.

I was not interested by this at all because I thought it was going to be some MMO with a lot of micro transactions thanks to Actvision but it does actually sound really interesting. I loved Reach menus and online integration, so I'm glad that Bungie is pushing this even more.

Did i hear right, you don´t have to play the "missions" (meaning everything that´s not PvP) with other people? So it can be like a singleplayer game?

The oneofswords article actually describes the games pretty well. He seems to have internalized a lot of the info and organized it well. Oh man, if Bungie manage to pull this off:

Joe’s current player is a Warlock, whose apparently more mystical powers were described as “like hitting someone in the face with a piece of the sun.” His friend Jason (presumably Jones) plays a Titan, the warrior class, and together they meet in the Overwatch Sector of the Tower. It’s one of the social spaces in Destiny, where players might be chatting, gambling for gear, or just enjoying the view. Joe and Jason then head to the spaceport, board Joe’s ship (which Jason has teasingly nicknamed “The Space Corolla”) and take off for Mars, where they intend to explore a lost human civilization — “the precious remains of our Golden Age.”
Their destination is the Dust Palace, a deadly area in the Exclusion Zone guarded by the Sand Eaters. Joe scoped it out earlier, but alone at night, it was too dangerous. By day with Jason for backup, this mission is more manageable, and they make quick work of the guards…until enemy reinforcements drop out of the sky. They’re in trouble, but since it’s a public area, a friendly stranger swoop in to save their asses. “Every time this happens, it’s amazing,” enthuses Staten. “It just doesn’t happen in any other shooter.”

Yes, but you still have to be connected to the internet.

They seem to be advertising a 'drop in drop out' co op system. Like join in progress for the campaign if I'm understanding it right.

So I'm just gonna say this right now. I like what I see.

Bungie's philosophy is so in tune with what I have wanted. Halo, for me, over the years has been about the cool moments that happened during games. Whether it was beating a tough team, getting a triple kill or doing something pretty wacky. In the later games, those moments are not as exciting or as engaging.

If Bungie can brin that back, that feeling of just rolling through some games with your friends, that would be so awesome. Remember playing in MM with a party one spot fewer than the max team size and having a nice chat with the random and ultimately tagging along with them in future for more games? I very much hope this is the sort of thing that drives Destiny.

That sounds great. Day/Night cycle confirmed? That's one of the aspects of MMO's I really like and if it can be taken into such a scale, would be really nice.

and seamless space travel since there's no loading screens, right?

So there are instances for groups and public missions? What if the place in the example is filled with thousands of players? Can't imagine that.

Man, it's refreshing to see a Bungie vidoc again - always has awesome production quality. The little bit of music we've been allowed to hear so far is sooo good, glad to hear Marty's music again. The environmental art, as always, is fucking top notch. I'm particularly looking forward to exploring the desert and snowy areas!

The raid aspects, if they're anything like World of Warcraft, will be so much fun. Getting together with large groups of friends to take down bosses that take several minutes to kill was my favorite part of WoW by far. Having those moments in an FPS would be amazing.
