And maybe they did take inspiration from Game of Thrones. Im sure plenty of shitty fanfics took inspiration from Game of Thrones.

They certainly have something there in the world, but they need to sell out with it. Not create something that needs OR even expects expansions. Give me a big steak to chew on in it of itself. I can already see the novels, and the collectibles, and everything planned. Halo CE didnt pull any punches, they blew the whole fucking Halo up along with what we thought was the flood and all the major characters outside of chief. They didnt set out to make a game that could be expanded on, they set out to make THE GAME.

Come on nib. There may be a few of those people sure ( console warriors -easy to spot them ). But a bulk of impartial folks seem to be genuinely let down by Bungie and are making concrete arguments in this thread.
 
Reading these reviews, I'm surprised the scores are as high as they are. It's like reading a 5/10 review but then they add a point or two because it's Bungie

I haven't played the game, but based on the impressions I've read it seems like there are purposeful holes in the game to be filled by paid DLC. Hence my dumb joke. Destiny is a very modern game is that regard.
 
Also, I'm not debating the merits of Destiny, but I wonder how many review sites saw the fan response and scored the game so it fell in line with the general consensus, in order to show that they had their finger on the pulse if the the general gaming community.

If reviewers were allowed early access, I'm sure we'd have seen a bunch of 9s and 10s. Only after seeing the complaints are they thinking, "well, shoot, we have to look like we know what we're talking about too."
 
I've got to know: are people still defending the game's story or have they essentially given up on that by now? All I heard throughout beta was how "this is just a tiny piece of the story. You're not supposed to understand how deep it is until the full game."

They spent 6 years making this so I don't think a few areas they knock together in a couple of months will fix the problem.

They have their roadmap and will probably just ignore the criticism and plow ahead with that. It's making money and that's apparently all that matters nowadays.

Rather than be mindless, people should be more responsible consumers. I wouldn't recommend Destiny to someone expecting a transcendent FPS or The Next Big Thing. It's a safe and competently made mixture of elements that doesn't always come together.

These are not "lies" this is you not liking the way they presented them. Opinion is not tangible, i'd agree that the story was bad, but there are some who ive talked to who enjoy it.


A lie would be saying that "this game is literally made out of chocolate" not "I think this game's story is good"

I find this to be a glaring mischaracterization of what people were saying – at least here – during the Beta.

I hate that all but one weapon shoots bullets/explosives. I wish there was more lightning, plasma, homing shit. Common... think of Halo's weapons or even Borderlands (even though I don't like it). You got weapons that all do the same shit except fire at different speeds with different damage. Can i get something more interesting please?
 
Guys It's actually a solid game. I'm starting to enjoy much more, even tho I do think those review scores do match up with the game.

I'm not going to lie, as the Halo Fanboy in me. I kind of want to gloat but, I'm not that bitter.

Bungie took it upon themselves to try and set the narrative as something incredible.

COO Pete Parsons says studio wants people to put new series on same shelf as major fantasy and sci-fi franchises, game has potential to surpass impact of Halo.

I'm really curious as to how much of Destiny's base content is actually locked out until they decide to drip-feed us with special events and raid missions.

It just seems like they might be thinking they wanted to plan weekly or monthly events to keep players coming back but reviewers wanting content just wanted everything available from the get go.

The developer is also accountable. Bungie is also at fault for pimping out a product that didn't come together in the way I think they wanted. As many pointed out, the story is pretty much not there at all or it's so implied or buried in the logs that it gets lost.

Like you said, it's 'likely' Destiny will get fulfilling content every week. We don't know yet. Also, we don't know if the content will be anything more than some special pvp theme going on like the labs from Uncharted 2 and 3.

Well, excuse me for taking Bungie at its word? This ain't about hype - I participated in both alpha and beta and largely knew what to expect. Not looking for a transcendent experience, lol, but the social/"MMO-light" stuff is beyond disappointing. I'm tempted to say less robust than GTAV. I bought this to be engrossed in a world with others, and that I most certainly have not been. Borderlands may have a juvenile plot and outlandish gunplay, but it owns that shit. What part of Destiny can you hold up and say the same about?

Gunplay / Art direction / Presentation (menu's, cohesion, etc.)

Everything else has been varying levels of let downs for me.
 
The most pre-ordered new IP in the history of vidyagames is a ~75%(*) game.

If that's not godlike marketing, I don't know what is.

I like Bungie but perhaps not enough not trust them at their word (I bought the game day one so it probably doesn't matter in the end lol). I put a distance between me and a corporation. I am the consumer and they are the entertainment provider. To put more into that relationship seems childish to me.

With regards to Borderlands, they have a niche and they work it. Hard. Bungie made something more palatable and safe and given the critical reaction, it's clear they miscalculated. I can't choose to 'hold up' one particular thing because the game is a collection of parts that don't always work well together.

Alright, fair enough. They never promised the story would be great, they just said they wanted people to think it was great, so yeah, you're right.

Yeah, I have a similar feeling on this. I think the game is disappointing, for sure. I would have loved to see more planets, the mission variety is pathetic, the end is a huge let-down, only having 4 PvP modes is baffling coming from Bungie, the patrol missions are blatant filler, and the lack of easy access to voice chat is frustrating.

But the actual core gameplay is still awesome. Punching dregs feels great, speeding around the moon is gorgeous, enemies die in just the right number of hits, the class abilities feel substantial and powerful. I'm compelled to get my gear up at least to the point in which I'm able to clear out the first raid. That'll determine whether or not I'm going to drop some money on an expansion.

Why would the game give me a Hunter's Legendary Item? Why? I can't trade it, sell it or anything as of now. It felt like a slap in my face. I though: "is that why i've played dozens hours of this game?". To get an item that's not of my class?

You are trying to some how correlate "hyping" with "lying" and that is not at all what I'm getting at. Games have been "over hyped" for years, whether it's bombastic in your face ads, John Romero claiming he's about to make you his bitch, next-gen Madden videos that do not represent the actual game, Peter Molyneux claiming his next game will change the very fabric of existence, developers and publishers are always going to conspire to get the most sales for their game through almost any means possible. It may be completely over selling certain aspects or mechanics of a game, or it may just be straight up bullshitting about non-existent features, like you seem to think I'm saying.

Like I said, this doesn't somehow exclude the player from being far too excited for a release, god knows I've gotten over excited for games in the past, but to suggest that it is solely their fault for being hyped is straight up garbage and continuing to push your dumb point with lame examples doesn't somehow make it less bullshit.

Mike, think about what you're asking. Really think about.

Bungie is certainly a talented group of developers. They can be over ambitious at times, but their work is generally on point and, again my opinion, capable of setting the example for other developers out there in that craft.

They are also some of the most outgoing development houses in regards to community engagement, which is respectable in a time where a lot of people take to Twitter to aggressively engage their audience.

But as I've said, they can be overly ambitious, and the risk was always there that they could fall short of what they set out to do. I think this was their tripping point. I'm not going to deduce the reasons why. They know what happened, maybe Activision knows what happened...that's their business. I'm hoping Geoff Keighly has the opportunity to write a Final Hours of Destiny piece like he did with other high profile games to gain insight that often we as the consumers and even media are never offered, but until then we won't know anything behind the scenes.

I only see it as a tripping point however. This game is intended to have some legs to it and has a solid mechanic behind it, so there's opportunities for Bungie to address where they fell short and work up to executing solutions. I also feel that Destiny 2 will be a far better work because of the shortcomings of Destiny.

Just my 2 cents anyways.

I suspect it is doing the game some favors. Maybe it is even intended so reviews miss it. I think people are downplaying the mandatory requirement to put 6 friends together to play the content. Thats a lot of friends to coordinate with, without a mechanism to meet new players in the game without joining random fire teams.

20% of players will actually play the raid content. The rest will never get to coordinate a group.
