This picture makes me sad because I know the back story behind why that dog is like that. (She was super abused and now her head and face is stuck like that) :(

I normally don't let Metacritic average scores get to me but this just baffles me. I'm a person who doesn't really enjoy FPS games and normally, if I do enjoy them because they contain RPG-like elements (Bioshock, Borderlands 1/2, Fallout 3/NV, and to a lesser degree Farcry 3). I've never played a CoD game and while I did own Battlefield for PS4, I never actually played it so I'm not huge into multiplayer either.

With all of that said, I'm enjoying this game so much and find myself completely in love with almost everything about this game, sure I was frustrated at first because of the whole no map thing but I can adapt. I feel like many people are being over critical of this game because they hyped themselves up so much that no matter what this game was, it would not have met their expectations. I understand different people have different opinions but this just seems like overkill with some people becoming happy or enjoying this whole shitting on the game thing going on.

In the end, I'm glad I'm not a person who pays attention to Metacritic and likes to try the game for myself.

TL;DR Game is fun, people are being crazy with their expectations

Thats not how logic works. Some do in some cases probably. I don't think Activision care at this point. They used the press to hype up the game prerelease. And it paid off in huge dollars.

I'm sure they care to a degree about scores, as there's no doubt that public perception regarding the quality of their product factors into sales. Especially with a new IP, they probably want the consumers to trust this new series and be willing to plonk down money in advance for the expansions and sequels to come.

We'll likely see future iterations correct some of the problems brought up here by reviewers.

The launch hype was pushing me towards getting a Digital Guardian Edition but after the game came out I decided that if I was going to get it I'd just get the normal edition.

Is it worth getting right now? I enjoyed the beta but after 15-ish hours with it I got immensely bored with it. Is the rest of the game (everything outside of Old Russia) varied enough to justify a purchase or is it just the stuff that was in Old Russia just with new environments?

Unless the prospect of 3 player dungeon-esque missions or competitive play interest you, you might want to wait for some kind of sale. The gameplay in Old Russia, while not quite as fun because of the lack of skills and enemy variety found later, is actually a pretty good indicator of the entire game's quality. Every level (with one rad exception) follows that "go to destination, activate ghost, defend ghost" formula. That's fine for me because I like the core gameplay, but if Old Russia didn't grab you, this probably won't do the same.

Is that dog blind in one eye or something? He looks neat.

Oh =(

Edit: looked it up (http://marniethedog.tumblr.com/about), doesn't say anything about abuse but it says the first 10 years of it's life is unknown so who knows, the head tilt was due to an illness, there's some recent videos of the dog on youtube and it seems quite happy.

Still struggling to work out what they spent their money and man hours on when considerably smaller teams with less money have created more.

I have to wonder if everything was just invested into creating a franchise, rather than a game. All the talk of a ten-year plan, of an evolving universe, all of the story & hype - they forgot that in order for any of that to happen, they had to make a great videogame. Mission variety and amount of content took a back seat to visual splendor & planning for eventual DLC.

Per your claims of sites being dependent on publishers for revenue wouldn't/couldn't Acti-Blizzard 'punish' those sites who reviewed it poorly in the future? Deny them marketing dollars or preview builds? Wouldn't those sites be afraid of that retaliation in the relationship you describe?

There isn't enough tinfoil in the world to make a hat that big...

It's not a "claim." That the sites are dependent on publishers, and publishers are willing to abuse that power is no secret. Here's a nice article with plenty of links to further information: http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkai...how-video-game-journalism-went-off-the-rails/

You're right that reviewers would ostensibly be worried about backlash from Acti-Blizzard from future titles. It will be extremely interesting to see what happens with, for instance, ModernAdvanced Warfare (my god they're creative with these titles aren't they?)

I don't need the bosses to be like Diablo.

Lower their HP pools and give them more interesting mechanics.

Why aren't there more bosses with a lot of destructable weapons on them that you could aim at to weaken or make the fight easier.

Levers or such that would change the environment you're in to make Void/Solar/Lightning etc do more or less damage.

Make certain dudes immune to damage UNLESS you hit their weak spots .... and let them evolve through the course of the fight and change their weakspots.

Bosses that you can melee .... instead of being literally one shot by every boss if you get into melee range.

Do shit like Deathwing had in WoW ... where you have to knock armor plates off of him to expose his weak points.

I'd love more interactivity with the environment during fights ... maybe you can flip levers to make large fixed turret emplacements available during the fight ... or vehicles.....

Adds that heal the boss ... or give the boss shields ...

I don't get it. I'm no game developer but have played a lot of games ... why the developers couldn't implement ANY of this in the strikes is beyond me. This was all stuff I literally thought of in 5 minutes.

AT LEAST MAKE THESE "BOSSES" NOT BE RETEXTURES OR LARGER/SMALLER VERSIONS OF NORMAL ENEMIES.

there are enough ideas in here to redo the game's existing bosses and add new ones via DLC. i don't understand what happened with the bosses.

Yep, people have crazy expectations for a a game to make the most of what it offers in game
/s

Not like no one has actually explained why they are receiving the game.

Nope, just people enjoying shitting on the game.

I'm honestly blown away that they repeat the same mission design that got boring in the beta for an entire game.

I'm more blown away that they really thought no matchmaking was a good idea. You're in the hub and can't talk to people unless you get them to join your group. Who the fuck thought that was a good idea for a social game? No text chat?

I've seen this defense being used a lot, and I'm not sure I agree. While expectations do play a role in this, most of these reviews are pointing out some pretty legitimate concerns regarding the game. If you read some, you'd probably have a better idea of what they're getting at.

The main complaints aren't failed promises - They're an underwhelming story, repetitive missions, a lack of planets, unnecessary voice chatting difficulty, small list of competetive modes, and lack of gameplay variety. None of that is people expecting more, they're legitimate complaints that can be applied to the game.

I love it myself and would gladly give it an 8/10, (It'll be a 9 if the raids are any good) but coming up with excuses like "people are being crazy with their expectations" is disingenuous to the constructive arguments being levied against what's here.

Hot damn, the GameSpot video review is just what I've been saying all day in video form.

Nothing like having your opinions corroborated so resolutely.

I've never enjoyed playing a game that I find so much wrong with quite as much as Destiny.

It's lacking, soulless, empty, load time-heavy, and has maybe the most pretentious, vague, and eye-roll worthy dialog/writing to ever grace anything ever. I would rather have genuinely no story than what little is there drenched in stuff like "the fallen" "the awoken" "the guardians" "the light" "the darkness" "the traveler" "the _____"

But it's fun, pretty, and has a really nice sweet spot of challenge. While it's far less vast as was suggested, the size is the least of Destiny's problems.

Nailed my feelings exactly. The 7/10 reviews sound just about right.

If the content is good, no matter how limited, people will play it over and over again. Counter-Strike only had bomb defusal missions and hostage rescue missions and a very limited selection of maps. People are still defusing bombs on de_dust2 in 2014. Because it's still fun to do so.

I'm sure nostalgia has NOTHING to do with it.

Damn! Reviewers telling it how it is with a hyped game. Hopefully this keeps up well into the future.

I've enjoyed what bits of it I've played so far but its something my girlfriend will enjoy more than me. White PS4+The last of Us for me.

Wow at those sixes.

Did not expect that at all.

Mostly because I don't expect reviewers to rank hyped games low.

It really has been surprising, and encouraging.

More games should have a week, at least, for reviews. Destiny seems like a glimpse of people's more honest opinions of a game after they have exited the honeymoon period.

As a guy who disagrees with a lot of these reviews, I'm proud of video game journalists for sorting past the hype and being willing to give low scores to AAA games. Sometimes I've felt as if games with glaring flaws (Skyward Sword and Watch_Dogs) have received free passes for their large budgets and marketing campaigns.

That's not to say opinion doesn't play a role here - it's all 100% subjective, after all. It's just that I'm glad to see reviewers evaluating the game beyond the marketing and sales numbers.

Sword of Crota is very cool. I actually liked the rest of the co-op campaign quite a bit the first time through even though it is repetitive. It helps that I have a built-in co-op partner.

My dissatisfaction with Destiny really started to grow with the end game (minus raids of course), and now I think that the six ratings are justified.

I don’t understand the logic of the light system. It's like an e-peen rating that doesn't even accurately measure my e-peen.

I also don’t understand how they mucked up the loot system like they did. It's actually more lucrative to farm Venus for quite a while as you build yourself up than it is to run Vanguard strikes.

It doesn’t make much of a difference, though, since after you’ve been through each strike a couple of times, they’re just tedious, and you’re grinding for the sake of it.

Kind of bummed right now, and the September-October games can’t get here soon enough.

What is the point when people rather just have smooth controls over anything else? Doesn't matter how broken it is so long you can keep luring them with a carrot and make lone wolfing *STILL* the name of the game.

Point of what? Waiting for a new big FPS? Content aside TF did try to change things up. COD sales re downward so casuals aren't still going fir the carrot anymore.

If Halo 5/MCC reviews and sells better, Bungie might be a little peeved. Although the latter is pretty unlikely considering the console it's on.

Well I think its very likely that Halo MCC sells better than Destiny does on Xbox One. 343i would have to do a pretty shitty job with it to review worse as well considering all the 6s...

agree with this. there are so many problems with the game, but there's nothing that makes me want to stop playing it.

I just beat the last story mission today, but I still have two strikes left and two PvP modes left to try out before I've seen it all mostly.

I'm still pretty puzzled as to what Bungie were really going for here. Wasn't it initially the plan that they'd make a game they wanted to support for several years? Before the first showing I thought this game was gonna be a bit like WoW in size and scope, then after the beta I figured it would be smaller scale but have a lot of content so it would still have the longevity of an MMO, but now I'm almost through everything and the game is just not made well enough that I really care to grind after having seen everything just to get better loot.

I think it's really sad because I'm sure Bungie has massive plans for sustaining the support for this game, also with all the events that are coming up.

Hopefully we won't all just stop playing it in the coming weeks, and on the positive side, most people did buy this game before waiting for the reviews and I've heard it sold incredibly well in the first few days, so good marketing on Bungie/Activision's part.

Not sure I would buy Bungie's next game though considering the key crew they've lost, and especially O'Donnel.

It's one of the poorest social games I've played, not even proximity chat.

It's been like this for a minute now, reviewers have really gotten their teeth back in recent years.

This is the only launch day game purchase I've made which I strongly regret. The encounters and level design are absolutely terrible.

At least the review scores reflect this.

Dont know about that. We still dont have destiny sales numbers. The only pr we got was $500 million.

I think MCC will sell better. If TF sold 2-3 million on Xone I suspect a Halo to do more. 4 games, 2 remade, to enhanced to 1080p 60fps, and the Halo 5 beta?

Umm, MCC is only on one console, so even if it did tremendously well.... not a chance.

However feel free to buy multiple copies.

Between this and NHL 15, not a good start to the fall gaming season. Two games with great gameplay but completely lacking in content.

Buying mine with Gamestop xbux.
