Deus Ex: Human Revolution |OT| I never asked for this... It gave me lemon-lime

The more I hear Adam talking the more I think that the voice actor went into the studio and they played him footage of the original Deus Ex and asked him to sound like that.

That is definitely the key and I think the developers understand that. Balancing fun and realism is what's important here, and there is always going to be a line in the sand somewhere. Even if the AI was "more realistic" there would always be something to complain about.

For example, say I sneak into the police station, kill someone, and put his body in a fairly easy to spot location. I could come back in a few hours and complain that there is no sign of anyone finding him, no panicked cops at all. If there were panicked cops, I could complain that there was no ambulance or first aid team arriving at the scene to check on him. If there was an ambulance, I could complain about how five hours later the guy at the front desk acts like nothing ever happened. Continue ad nauseum.

That's a very good point. Something like finding a dead body should have more of an impact on the whole group AI.

Sooo are there real consequences when you go full-terminator on people, and decimate SWAT members and/or cops? Or just "Jensen, how could you!" one-liners?

Haven't finished the game, but I'm already thinking about my psycho-killer playthrough. This is Deus Ex, after all.

Funnily enough, the French voice actor is quite the normal-sounding dude, and it's much, much better.

The AI will check for places where they thought they heard something and will spot you in a vent if they manage to look into it. So it's got that going for it.
I never noticed that they'd peak into a vent. And yeah they'd check the spot where a noise came from, which is why I could also lay out a bullet trail with the silenced pistol to lead enemies to the location I wanted in order to take them out in melee. Again they act a lot like the AI in MGS2 (even down to the animations!), but I was never, ever surprised by anything they did in HR.

It probably would’ve appeared better if they did the difficulties in a similar way as well, i.e. take away surefire stun weapons and silencers the higher you go.
Still maintain that MGS2 on the higher difficulties features the greatest stealth AI to date. Predictable but still very much capable of surprising the player.
And I wouldn't disagree!

Apparently he really sounds like that... which is why he was perfect for the role.

IW used the merge w/Helios ending as canon, right? If SE decided to do a proper DX2, they could just forget IW ever happened and make one of the other two endings canon. New Dark Age would rock my balls off.

I think technically all of Deus Ex's endings somehow actually happened according to IW's story.

It was posted like 30 posts up...

I hope HR's endgame is set up like DX and IW's were. I want to have to make a chouce between several options/factions.

I've had no power for the past 23 hours due to the hurricane and it was torture. I can't even begin to describe the hell that I just went through. No Internet, no TV, no movies, no porn, no lights (got dark after 8pm so I was just sitting there doing nothing trying to sleep), and most of all, no Human Revolution.

If there is a such thing as 21st Century Hell, I just lived it.

The canon ending is basically a combination between Dark Ages and Helio merger. What happens is JC merging with Helios and then blowing up the facility. In IW they often refer to something called the Collapse, which is basically the Dark Ages Tong suggested.

As someone who never played a Deus Ex before (/duck), I can say that this game is basically a superior mix of Fallout 3 and what ME2 should have been.

That may seem like an insult to some people, but it translates into me being an instant fan and wanting to play the original.
I don't consider it an insult in the least, but I thought Fallout 3 and ME2 were both kinda crappy.

I still maintain that HR is basically Metal Gear Solid 2 + RPG elements.

Hmmm.... still want SE to do a proper DX2. Problem is, they can't really do that without remaking DX, since such a large portion of their current audience never played DX1.

Has anyone found a solution to the DX11 crashing? I'm thoroughly enjoying the game but hate having to play in a stuttering DX9 instead of the constantly crashing DX11.

God I love cloaking, stepping out in front of some fool, and ventilating his face with my silenced 10mm, the ducking back into cover and getting ready to do the same to his buddy when he comes over to check.

..it's a joke right? The french VA is terrible (as always), especially Adam's voice. It doesn't fit the character at all.
The original voice actor is perfect.

I have no problem with it. The English VA, however, is off at times (in my opinion). (I'm playing both versions).

That's just something we have to accept with most stealth games; if they were realistic, then there wouldn't be a 2-minute cooldown period until patrols are relaxed again, the entire area would go on lockdown and every square inch would be searched until they found you.
It'd be cool to see a game actually do that. At the very least it might force people to change up their approach instead of just going "hey this is my non-lethal run, I'll just wait for them to forget about me and then just go about my business."

Though like others said I guess quick saving kinda ruins that.

It's doable, you'd just kind of have to design the entire game around it for it to really work. Then you have the bigger task of actually making it work once you've committed to forcing all your players to engage in the game that way.

So the enemies in the tutorial level are also counted for the no-kill achievement right? Well I already arrived in Hengsha, I'm fucked.

Well games like Splinter Cell and other old stealth based games had lot of missions end as soon as you were spotted, it made sense. Killing someone and sneaking away in a corner for a couple minutes and everything turns out fine? Ridiculous. Also how you can rain hell in one area, but enter a door and everyone in the room is calm and has no idea about the small war you declared outside.

It would be cool if you got spotted that the enemy from then on was in an alert phase or at least the entire level from then on would be alerted and reinforced with extra guards.

Yes they are. Don't worry about it, the game won't take long to play-through again if you critical path it.

So, I just picked this up out of boredom/hearing good things and I've got to say, I'm quite enjoying it. I love stealth mechanics in any game, so that aspect is really tickling my fancy.

One question: is anyone else daunted by the sheer amount things/options in the game? I mean, I really enjoyed the first mission after the prologue because it was linear to an extent and I had no other options, but now that I've side quests and whatnot popping up, it's just a bit much. And I know that this doesn't even constitute a negative; it's just me being weird, for the most part.

Also, it's visually fantastic, but inconsistent. What's with Sarif - one of the primary characters - having some of the worst facial animation/modeling ever? This is one of the reasons why I generally loathe RPGs: Uncanny Valley encounters. I was floored by the level of quality and consistency initially, but now, having seen some of the exchanges between Jensen et al., they're eliciting the opposite end of the spectrum.

Hm, so far I'm not really getting what the big deal is about this game. It feels like crysis 2 but with much worse graphics, and without the fun suit. I'm only about an hour in though..

Give it a few hours, you'll get used to all of the information being presented to you. There really aren't that many quests in the grand scheme of things it's just that the game seems a little overwhelming when it first opens up.

And yes, the character models are a weak-point. It doesn't bother me personally.

Give it about 4 or 5 more hours and see if that changes anything. This game is in a different league than Crysis 2.

If you really wanted to you could just critical path the game for a while, once you have encountered the first boss you have a chance to mop up anything you want to in Detroit before leaving.

No, don't critical path it. Explore every nook and cranny of this Mona Lisa of a game.

This game has some funny lines.

(Spoilers for mid and end game side quests in China and Detroit)

Loved the bit where they're comparing
the guy who wants to blow up the police station to Che Guevara and Jansen says "Does he have the shirt?" (the other guy is like "What?"). And then during Malik's mission in China: if you have the social conversation aug and Jansen tries to use it during her conversation with him (to get her to spill more details about the situation), Malik says something like "And don't you even dare try to use that CASIE mod on me, Jansen" and Jansen says something like "it's only because I care" (don't have his phrasing right, but it's hilarious).
