Develop: Sony studios have started PS4 projects, Xbox Next aiming for 2013 launch

If this book can be used as a basis, then both of them started developing soon after the launch of the 360 and the PS3.

For the ones who haven't read it, Sony stared developing PS3 in 2001, and Microsoft started with the 360 in 2003, using similar architecture of the PowerPC core in Cell's chip, which was being created by IBM.

Xbox Infinity sounds like good name to me so it probably won't be that.

I'm still praying for a E3 2012 reveal and a spring 2013 launch.

I want it to be Infinity just because of the opportunity they have for tag lines.

"Xbox Infinity, Embrace the Infinite". Oh well a man can dream :(

I'm kind of expecting a small window between the consoles. Something like:

Wii U - Summer '12
Xbox3 - Fall '12 - Spring '13
PS4 - Spring '13 - Summer ' 13

it's all a package. In the end though Sony needs momentum, and sorry but you don't create momentum by starting to charge for something. MS already has crazy momentum so they can pretty much shit on your face at the cash register and most people would still buy it. Sony can't do that right now. I'm sure they want to, and if they were in a better position they would definitely do it. But I don't think that is now or next gen, at least not at launch...

As we learn every generation... everything gets reset on launch day.

I don't think Microsoft or Sony would be willing to NOT launch during the fall season.

The next xbox has to be numbered in order to show that it is a successor to the current system. Wii to Wii U is really telling IMO on how similar the two consoles are, I do not think microsoft wants that situation

In the West you mean? Sony launched the PS2 in Japan in March and it went on to become one of the best selling systems over there.

Xbox Infinity would be a dangerous name to go with. What would they possibily name the follow up to that? Xbox Time Paradox?

Perhaps they'll be smart enough to drop the generational paradigm that's becoming obsolete and go with a constantly evolving, but compatible, hardware platform.

Are we talking an upgradable console or one that MS would upgrade and then release again over time?

Xbox +1.

Seriously though, perhaps the next console won't have "Xbox" in the name at all.

Hard to believe when they've been teasing XBOX as the new games portal for Windows 8.

No it wasn't. That was a fake paper launch date to hold off competition.

Guess I learned something new. I was always under the impression that they were copying the PS2 launch time frame (e.g. Japan only), but Blu-Ray caused them to delay to a WW Fall launch.

Things are different now, though. Gamers are attached to not only the brands and franchises but their network ID's, profiles, gamer cards/trophy collections and friends lists which will all carry over this time.

With the PS2 they had a solid launch date, playable launch games on the show floor, and an exact launch price at the Tokyo Game Show in the September... 6 months before launch.

With PS3, they had nothing until almost the very end of Spring until they finally announced the "delay" because third parties were getting tired of press asking to see launch games that were barely even started at that point. The PS3 dev kits were not even finalized until E306.

True... Achievements, Trophies, and big friends lists all carry over. Along with any downloaded paid for content. New to this gen.

I bought my ps3 with GoW3 and since then, I did not see anything else topping it technically.
I'm pretty dissapointed with this gen. Tons of shooters and the rest underdevelopped. Sequels, sequels. Hopefully there was heavy rain.

Bring on next gen! 1080p@60fps+AA in all games will make me drool. Enough of those sluggish 30fps games.

A little more than 7 years for this gen is totally fine, I'm good to buy a new console in 2013. Yeah, I'll be sticking to the brand I have the most downloaded content and friends on.

I even wrote a response to this only to find out its a 2 year old thread! You know someone got banned for this yesterday right???
