[DF] Guardians of the Galaxy: PS5 vs Xbox Series X/S - A Great Game But 60FPS Comes At A Cost

Bullet Club

Banned

Eidos Montreal's gorgeous take on Guardian's of the Galaxy gets a full tech breakdown, as played on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. The game runs with two modes on PS5 and Series X, allowing for 1080p and 60fps gameplay or 4K at 30fps. Tom dissects the pros and cons of each - and the fortunes of the Series S version too.

So it was 1080p and not 1440. Still not sure why it had to go so low along with lowered effects to boot…I'm just not getting where the bottleneck is.

This is a last gen engine yet it still cant hold 1080 60fps, next gen games are gonna be 1440p 30fps, with maybe a 900p 60fps mode, me thinks.

I'm sorry. If you had brought a ps5 or a series X instead you could play with higher fidelity.

PS5 and Series X runs at 4k30 in quality mode... and Tom says there is a chance of DRS on the quality mode, he just don't pick up in his test.

- Both consoles miss the 60 target in 1080p60 Mode… drops to 40fps.
- Series X holds better the framerate.
- Framerate drops only in cutscenes in 4k30 Mode.
- Too heavy cutbacks in 1080p60 mode.

Seems like the best mode to play is 4k30 from their conclusion… 1080p60 visuals are really too drastic downgraded that it is weird because it is rendering 1/4 of the pixels and some effects are decrease plus the drops in framerate.

Edit - Fixed.

I don't see how anyone can actually play this game on a PS5 or XSX and claim it looks last gen.
1080p in 60fps mode is somewhat disappointing in that it is not common to see something like this when the quality mode is native 4k and graphic improvements. Normal would have been dynamic up to 1440p at least.

But as you say, the game looks extraordinary in quality mode and perfectly one of the most visually prominent games in the XSX and PS5 catalog. .

PS. Of course, the work on the XSS version that clearly can give more is disappointing.

I'm picking up the game today. Are you playing in quality mode?

Performance is native 1080 at 60. I watching the video, IMO I not seeing any reason why next gen machines need to down 1920x1080 to archieve 60 fps.

That seems like an extreme drop in resolution for 60 fps. I would think a target of 1440p DRS would be able to achieve 60fps.

- PS5 holds better the framerate.

Pretty sure he said frame rate was "marginally better" on XSX

He specifically says Xbox Series X has a marginally better frame rate, plus a VRR option as well.

Even a dynamic 4k would be better. If they feel insecurity about perfomance, just adjust the DRS to be more agressive.

Good. The second game was shit. This game is great. You guys really need to let it go.

You mean second Deus Ex by Eidos-Montréal? It was okay. Human Revolution was amazing.

Who knows maybe their third try at Deus Ex would be as great as the OG. I guess we will never know.

Enjoy this CINEMATIC EXPIERIENCE. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Playing this on pc where it's consistently around 80fps+ and with how fast the game play is I can't see how people could stomach playing this @ 30fps.

Deus Ex died so this game could live. Enjoy.
But this game looks great so it's ok. Hopefully they make another Deus Ex in the future.

I think we all knew what was going to happen to the Series S, just wait until games start being made natively for next gen, I think the gap will get bigger.

30fps and 4k on PS5 and Series X is weird when you factor in how many games have been able to hit 4K/60 FPS on those consoles. Hopefully it gets patched.

LOL what??
.They say XSX holds better framerate and you can see that cleary in the video.

I don't really wanna play 30 fps lol but 1080 is ehh... Do we think it'll run better on my 2080S and ryzen 5 3600xt? Maybe I should do PC after all, even though I wanted a disc

The 60fps mode is a bit surprising. I've only managed to get it to drop into the 60s once the entire game at 1440p DLSS quality (960p? but obviously a little overhead in DLSS so surely comparable to 1080p) with no RT but otherwise max which is surely higher than the console 60fps mode. 95% of the time it is 90-120fps.

I only say this is strange as based on past games my PC is normally + or - 10% with the consoles but it is miles ahead in this game.

It doesn't make much sense. If PS5 and Series X can run the game at 60 fps it's not CPU limited, so the GPU is the bottleneck. But 1080@60fps requires only half the computational power of 4K@30fps, the game should run fine at 1440p and 60 fps. Very weird.

EDIT...

What? 1080 and 30 fps on Series S? What a joke!

Yea I tried it on 30 after Performance mode and it's a slideshow.
That happens when you switch from framerate modes… give few minutes to eyes adapt and it become good again.

If you started on 4k30 without do the shift then you will barely notice.

It is a side effect from how our eyes adapts to different framerates.

Basically a small difference between the two versions almost identical IMO.

Still i have a feeling they could have done a better job with the 60FPs mode. 4K 30FPs seems like the best option to me.

It' okay, I agree. Too cinematic and too restrictive for my taste but there are some good things about. It looks stunning, runs great on PC and has an entertaining story.

I really, really hope for another Deus Ex. Deus Ex is like the complete opposite of this in terms of game design.

I want to be immersed in my sims, god damn it!

Yeah, even more perplexing is that it suffers bigger frame drops compared to quality mode too. It just doesn't seem to make any logical sense.

Wow you did 2 play throughs and doing another 1 on a different console? You must really like this game lol

Takes 2 playthroughs to get all of the trophies if you don't know where everything is. I played through the game a week before it was released, so I had do to it blind to even what the trophy requirements were.

Seems like the game looks much nicer than I expected, but it's so strange that it is able to run natively at 4K/30 and yet it needs so many sacrifices to run at 60FPS. It's unacceptable to play in 1080p in this day and age.

How does this game run on PS4 and X1? There is no reason the XSS isn't outperforming those devices. The concern for the budget console is notable though.

Who is this 'we'? Name a console that showed worse and worse performance as a generation proceeds. Even the X1 performs better today than at launch. The XSS and the XSX for that matter aren't using all the features available to them. Despite that there are plenty of examples of the XSS handing games quite well, MS Flight Simulator for one. That title also has to be current generation only. Would you say that title is evidence that the XSS would perform worse as a current gen only title?

ps4 and pro versions look decent there
