Did "The Ring" scare you as a kid/adult?

The Ring has suffered the same fate of The Sixth Sense, in that everyone knows the surprise twist ending that
finding Samara's body at the bottom of the well isn't what stops the curse, that she crawls out of the TV to kill her victims, and that you have to duplicate the VHS and make someone watch it in order to be saved.

But I remember that when this film first came out, the twist was completely unexpecting and that everyone was hailing this as the scariest movie to come out since The Exorcist (seriously, at the wake of Naomi Watts' niece, when they show her rotten body curled up in the closer...NIGHTMARE FUEL FOR WEEKS). I'd also argue to say that it is by far the best remake of a foreign horror film, and the box office numbers support that. Not only that, but it really surpassed the scare factor of original "Ringu" by leaps and bounds.

What are your thoughts on it? Any good memories of it scaring the crap out of you?

well this did make 13 year old me jump

I don't remember it scaring me, per se, but I think I jumped during the horse scene when I saw it in theatres. Probably the closet scene as well.

It was one of my favourite movies when I was younger.

Doesn't know that "You" is used in both the singular and plural
My girlfriend at the time, nearly bit my finger off. She was holding my hand close to her face, like she was hiding behind it.

Yes, the movie scared me.

I remember watching the Japanese one. I was watching it from my bed and as soon as that girl starting crawling out of the TV, I jumped up, turned on the lights, paused the movie and turned off the TV. I had to gather myself before I could finish the rest of the movie.

I watched the American re-make years later. It was good, but nowhere as good as the original one. Mainly because the story made more sense than the American one.

Actually no. I think I saw this for the first time in high school, and I remember the majority of it not being very scary, and specifically it losing a lot of steam by the end

Blair Witch Project was always super scary to me

I don't watch horror movies. People like the thrill of being scared, but personally, I hate being scared. Anyway, I remember my sisters renting the movie when I was younger. I passed by the living room when the DVD menu was on, went straight to my room, and didn't come out until they were done. Of course I've seen gifs and pictures here and there on the Internet, though. They're still pretty creepy to me, and I imagine it's worse in the context of the movie.

Nah, but I do love the creepy vibes it has.
The only part that made me jump, was the jumpscare after a black screen. The guy is in the institution and he yanks a filecabinet open right after it; I think that shit made everyone in the theater jump.

I think I was around 20 when I saw it for the first time. Scared me shitless, loved the movie but couldn't watch it again.
It didn't help though that I woke up in the middle of the night with my TV showing static noise. Must have touched the remote while sleeping, couldn't really sleep for the rest of the night

edit: I usually don't watch horror movies and I'm afraid to play Outcast

Not seen the American version but the original was very effective if a little campy. Much better than any version of The Grudge.

At the time in the cinema, yeah it had an effect, doesn't hold up scare wise but I still love the film, great atmosphere and a genuinely great looking film, so well shot. Great score too from Hans Zimmer.

Cautiously optimistic for the third film later in the year. It's about 8 years too late though.

Yeah, it freaked me out.

The premise was dumb as hell so I was expecting a real turd of a movie. Ten minutes in and I realized this was not at all what I thought it was going to be.

This was probably the last horror movie I saw that actually scared me. I was 27 at the time.

The Ring was scary.

It was a good movie. There were a lot of scenes that I found disturbing: horses, flies, falling ladders, woman looking at you, etc. These are more effective than your typical horror movie's blood, chainsaw, etc. type scenes that are shocking in the moment but not very memorable.

Having watched Ringu before The Ring, it didn't scare me as much, but I was still a kid so there was still some scare factor, I thought they did a great job with Samara's effects.

There was a TV in my room, I was too scared to open my eyes when I woke up, so I stayed in bed, phone ringing but I was too scared to answer, parents rushed home after work wondering why I wasn't answering the damn phone.

A classic, that part
when she comes out of the TV
was too scary for my sanity. Also was the start of Gore Verbinski into the big blockbusters, like Pirates of the Caribeean. This "urban legend" types of movies are the best.

The concept scared me until I imagined what would happen if you watched the tape on a VCR connected to a wall mounted TV.

She'd snap her neck on the coffee table, that's what would happen.

Yup, loved it. Saw it several times in the theater. Was probably the first movie to actually scare me, like even after I got home and for the rest of the week. It came out in 2002? So I was freaking 20 years old, not a teenager anymore.

After I saw it for the first time, I got home and took a shower. We're talking like, midnight. For no reason I got a nosebleed which had me legit shook since she suffered from a nosebleed in the film

My friend was living in college dorms (I wasn't there, just a tale he tells). 1 of the dorm guys was super scared, more than the rest of them. He had a TV where you could set an alarm to turn on and wake you up. As a prank, they turned the volume up to max and removed the coax cable. Set the alarm to 3 am. When the time came, it turned on on its own in the middle of the night to super loud static, the whole floor could hear him screaming.

The Ring 2 sucked ass, as does the original Ringu.

I'm an elitist on "the original was better" mentality, so whenever American remakes are announced, I scoff. The Ring is like one of a few exceptions for me.

Yes. I couldn't sleep with the lights off and ended up watching The Ladies' Man at like 3am to get my mind of the movie.

Scared the hell out of me when I saw it in theaters, but I recently rewatched it and found it (aside from the beginning) cheesy and slow. Also, Naomi Watts is totally responsible for her
baby daddy's death.

what happens if i turn all my tvs so that they're facing the wall?

what if I stuck two tvs together so that they're facing each other?

Man I watched this movie at a birthday party when I was in sixth grade. While I was watching, it wasn't that scary to me, but afterwards HOLY SHIT. I kept thinking that someone would come out of my TV. I even had friends call and say "you will die in seven days". I don't remember if there was a lot of jump scares, but the atmosphere of the movie was really spooky.

I watched it at 16 and I still refuse to watch it by myself and I'm a grown ass man. Every time I've watched it, it has been with friends.

Not even for a fraction of a second. I don't get the appeal of the Ring (neither the original or the remake).
