Did "The Ring" scare you as a kid/adult?

I don't get it still. It just scares you so hard your literally turn necrotic instantly, your jaw breaks, and your head falls off?

The horse part is still the creepiest, mostly because of the noise it makes and not a fan of the blood water.

Otherwise, it wasn't too bad. Seen it about 3 times.

i thought it was a great horror movie.. both versions

not too many jumpscares, lots of legit psychological scares and a great soundtrack

Theres gotta be some scientific explanation right?

How can she just appear out of a tv?

What if the government got a hold of the tape, had someone watch it and then as a test had them sit in some monitored bunker underground in a room with no tv's or devices?

well this did make 13 year old me jump

nope nope nope

it is all coming back

I remember watching it with my cousin at the time the dead girl in the closet pops up. My cousin was just standing up and happened to catch the image before turning around to go use the restroom and he immediately fell to the ground and started rocking back and forth. I need to hang out with that dude again sometime.

I had to sleep on my parents' couch the night after and I accidentally turned on the TV to a channel with static.

Freaked me out. Good thing the phone didn't ring too.

I remember watching it when I was home sick from school one day, in the dark in my room. The first time seeing the closet reveal scene scared the ever loving shit out of me, so much so that I went back and paused it to get a good look at the face just to try and desensitize myself to it and "beat" it I guess.

I really like this film. I think it creates a very creepy atmosphere with strange imagery, and of course the final plot twist was pretty great and unexpected. Naomi Watts is excellent and carries the film really well, and I like how are follows the breadcrumbs and unravels the mystery - she's a good character and she's proactive. Not sure if this was a fluke by Gore Verbinski, but it was a pretty amazing first crack at the horror genre and I'd love to see him have another go.

The only horror movie that has scared me in recent memory was the first Blair witch project because it felt real. Everything else I have a hard time with suspension of disbelief because in the back of my mind I know it's actors in front of a camera , so no the ring never scared me

Actually I remember the sixth sense scaring me too. I couldn't close my shower door for a while after watching that movie

Yeah, I was maybe 19 at the time and in the theatre it was pretty scary. Great movie. Maintains a sort of depressing vibe throughout that adds a ton to the jump scares.

Yes, had problems going asleep and nightmares for well over a week (wouldn't surprise me it it was a few weeks even). It was probably the first horror I've watched.

I had TV in my room. Couldn't sleep the first night after I saw Ringu.

Aso, FigureGAF probably enjoy this but personally, why would anyone buy this? S.H Figuarts Ringu figure:

at last, for christ's sake
no, I can count maybe three or four horror movies that genuinely scared me and Ring isn't one of them

Early 20s. Couldn't sleep for a month.

I watched that and Miike's "Audition". Fuck my life...

It was very well done and I think exceeded the original in some ways as well. The original had
a psychic boyfriend who had visions when he touched things. SUPER CHEESY!
. It definitely marked the death of Japanese movies for me after seeing that...

Oh...it gets worse...I don't know if there was a power issue or whatever, but my tv turned itself on in the middle of the night once a week or two after watching...

I kind of knew what to expect because I watched a parody of it in a Stephen Chow movie. Chow is sitting on the couch chilling and a dude that's tasked with trying to mess with Chow appears to come out of the TV. Chow just stays calm and hits him when he comes close. Classic...!

There was some other horror movie that was pretty freaky too. I remember some little girl going down the stairs and then sort of magically teleporting upright. Dunno why that freaked me out but it did.

I watched Ringu first so this...

... is a million times better than a frowny kid with glossy CGI making her jump around.

A shame too because I love Stan Winston, and he knocked it out of the park with the first victim.

Ringu felt low budget in a way that hampered its quality. It made the ridiculous plot of a haunted VHS cassette tape as cheesy as it sounds. The remake made things feel more plausible. The Ring haunted me; Ringu was a disappointment.

Nope, not in the slightest.

Never understood what's so frightening about some small ass girl crawling out of my TV.. What's she going to do ? kick my shins ?
Seems like a pedophile's wet dream coming true.

I was 18 when I took my gf at the time to see it. It scared us both but I absolutely loved the mood and atmosphere. I thought it was beautifully shot (that firey sunset overlooking the cabin) and Naomi is banging.

The Ring is probably my favorite horror film. I love "dread" in horror films. The creeping sense of urgency throughout the film was so effective. Great, stark scenery and acting too. Just wonderful film

Absolutely as a kid. Watched it at my friend's place and we all freaked out when the house phone rang in sync with the movie's.

Was 15 and saw it with a few friends. That next week I put a towel over the tv before going to bed.

I have never been scared of a horror movie since

The original version (Japanese) was the first one I watched. Pretty good, and that iconic scene
of Sadako coming out of the TV
really did creep me out as a young dude.

I found Ju-on: The Grudge to have more creepy moments though, especially
the scene where the ghost crawled from the bedsheets lol

After I finished watching it for the first time, the phone rang. That was pretty fucking creepy.

It was just my nan on the other side though.

The Ring had the misfortune of being one of those "movies" that people made such a big deal about that it had to live up to the hype. I mean, at their time, movies like Scream, The Blair Witch Project, The Ring and more recently, Paranormal Activity were being hailed by media and audiences as "the most scariest movies EVER". To me, a seasoned horror lover, none came close(the lot of them were descent, IMO). The Ring was just a "good" horror movie, but I didn't see it being scary. It was just a passable movie. The original, Ringu, I thought was a better movie, mood-wise, it felt more raw and less glossy than the American venture, but it wasn't too much better.

Still, I think these movies are probably the better than the Grudge movies, and The Ring remake is probably the better "J-horror" remake out of the lot that came out due to the trend. One Missed Call and Pulse are probably some of the worse. The original One Missed Call was, at least, entertaining(actually, it shits over the American remake and is actually a fun watch), and the original Pulse had more tolerable characters and creepier atmosphere. I think the problem with the majority of those western remakes was they were trying to "teen horror" them up and sell them to the WB/CW audience, and doing so, were trying to inject them with cool, edgy style to be hip with the youngins instead of focusing on making a good movie. I watched a review of 2009/2010's Chain Letter, a HORRID movie that is probably the epitome of everything "bad" with horror movies(especially "teen horror") of the 00s. That movie, alone, is a good example of how you should NOT make a horror movie.

That being said, I am sorta interested in the reboot/remake/sequel/whateverthehellitis. I'll give it a chance. I always do.

I saw the Ring and thought it was pretty good. I thought it was scary to so it had me a little spooked. But nothing has scared me nearly as much in my adult life as as the Grudge did. And I mean the first Japanese movie, not the TV movies or the American remake. Just something about it had me so fucking scared for a while. I just kept thinking eventually that bitch was going to sneak up on me and it's going to be over.

It scared me when I saw it in my mid 20s.

I have to rewatch it. Haven't seen it in a long time.

Too bad the sequel wasn't as good as the original.

BTW, weren't they making a third one?

Yes. The first time I watched it, I was legitimately scared. I was 20 at the time. I have never seen a movie quite like it back then. I didn't know it was a remake of the original Japanese movie until years later. I haven't seen the Japanese version.

I have seen the Japanese version of Dark Water, and the American Version. The Japanese version is leagues better. I imagine the Japanese version of the Ring to be better then the American version, although the American version was really good.

You know, The Ring 2 might have issues and not be great, but at least the story doesn't go into full on WTF is this shit mode like the sequels to Ringu. And it has a happier ending which I kind of appreciate.
