Did "The Ring" scare you as a kid/adult?

I saw this opening night going into it with zero knowledge of what I was getting myself into. With a name like 'The Ring' I was expecting a romcom about a lost wedding ring or something...

Couldn't sleep for a week after.

When she comes out of the TV stayed with me for months. It got under my skin like nothing else.

Only movies to come close in terms of leaving an impression were Insidious, The Conjuring, and Annabelle, but the creep with those wore off within a day or two.

How bad? :(

ANy other good movies coming this year?

It's not that bad. If you enjoyed the other two you'll like the third as well.

Probably the most scary movie I've ever seen tbh.

But more than that I think it's a really well constructed horror movie. It's not based on gore and jump scares (though it has a few of those) but rather building up atmosphere and suspense and using unsettling imagery to create tension.

Horror is extremely subjective so I'm not surprised some people think it's silly. I think one of the central components of jhorror is that those movies have a very "dream logic" of an inescapable horror that is constantly building but you can't actually think about too hard or else the logic of it all breaks. You kind of just have to be along for the ride and get absorbed in the feeling of the movie, which I think the Ring does an amazing job of establishing.

well this did make 13 year old me jump

Yeah, this scared me. Was perfectly fine after watching it though, no problems sleeping or anything.

I found the Grudge scarier, but yeah it did the first time i watched it. There's a lot of boring stuff in between scares though imo

Yes holy shit yes. I was about 19 when it came out and I had no idea what the movie was about - never saw a preview. Went with friends and that first closet reveal had me almost shit myself. The rest of the movie creeped me out.

Now, the movie isn't so bad, but when you know nothing about it and you're young... it sucks.

Nope. Watched it when it was new and while I jumped a bit it never scared me. The Grudge fucked me up though.

I should probably see the original Japanese versions of The Ring and The Grudge someday.

Oh yeah. The movie just had this look about it, this feel, it made it different than other scary movies I'd seen.

And I was surprised when I saw Gore Verbinski's next movie was going to be Pirates of the Caribbean. I figured that if nothing else, the movie would look really good.

This man does his research.
Echoing sentiments that the remake completely missed the mark.

I mean, the idea of cutting away from the final scene to show something else happening was probably the stupidest decision. Completely deflated the tension.

Also, Hulk-Sadako sucks.

Yes it scared me. I remember the imagery of the vhs tape stuck with me. I had never seen random creepy images put together like that before and it kind of creeped me out.

During the opening sequence, I laughed out loud in the theater when the girl was explaining the ghost story about the video tape that kills people. I thought they were just trading scary stories and conspiracy theories until a few minutes later when I found out that was the actual plot of the movie. I just couldn't take anything seriously after that. It's a fucking haunted VHS.

So the first one didn't. However, driving home from The Ring 2, as I was going down a back street in my subdivision, four deer came out and were running down the street next to my car for a good 150 yards. That definitely unsettled me a bit.

I watched this first on a DVD rental.

After the movie ended I was kinda freaked out and wanted to watch the extras.

I noticed that the cursor disappeared for a spot as I was flicking it down the menu options.

I hit enter while it was gone.

THE FUCKING TAPE STARTED PLAYING.

To make it worse I got a phone call shortly after which I did not want to answer.
It was my mom.

Forgot about this movie...haven't not seen in it years I will definitely watch again. Was freaky as fuck, probably my favourite horror movie besides The Strangers.

After coming back home from seeing it I watched TV and fell alseep. I woke up at 3:30AM and my big screen was full of static. I couldn't find the remote either. Needless to say I was layed there for a long time before I had the gits to turn it off.

Scared the shit out of me for months, like slept with the TV on. I was like 17 or something, was the first movie that really terrified me.

I remember being afraid when I saw it in the theaters. My GF at the time was really into horror movies, and there was a lot of energy in the packed house, so I guess I fed on that. I remember having a feeling of unease the entire movie.

Not at all, re-watched it in 7th grade, the last day before school, my teacher asked me to bring a movie and I brought The Ring, lol. My teacher loved it but some of my classmates got pretty scared..

It's definitely one of the few "horror" movies that actually stuck with me. The whole thing had a excellent cinematography and it just felt really well made in terms of production values.

Also one thing that stays with you is that the movie actually has disturbing imagery that burns into your mind (nails poking through nails, and even the abstract creepy stuff on the tape etc). Now it seems like a lot of movies rely on the eeriness and suspense and whenever they show you "the thing" you should be afraid of it looks really silly.

It's weird that I wasn't that bothered by it despite it having all the right elements that usually make me lose sleep. Same thing happened recently with The Babadook. I think it has to do with the fact that I really enjoyed the movies outside of their horror elements. I think them being great in other areas helped take the focus off of the scares.

I really wanna watch The Ring again now...

I didn't see it when it first came out. I had heard about how scary it was for years and years, so when I finally saw it, I was pretty disappointed. Same with Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. I think you have to see these movies when they're fresh before they get parodied to death if you want to get spooked.

Watched the original, japanese version with my sister. When that scene happened, every hair on my back stood on end. I had to stop the tape, open the lights and breathe.

Then we put it in rewind and watched the scene again. It was something alien, sick and twisted, contrary to the american one which design wise was very familiar, so it didn't leave the same impression.

As much as I love Ringu and Ring 0: Birthday I can't say either of them scared me. Now Suicide Club is another matter: I had to call my friend at 2:00 am just to calm down enough to where I could fall asleep. I'm not sure why that movie hit me the way it did but it really unnerved me. First movie since I was in elementary school to scare the hell out of me.

I watched "The Ring" and "White Noise" over the course of two days when I was young and, while I wasn't scared during either movie, there was a period where I was afraid of TV screens just playing static.

Now that I think about it I think that was the last time I was "irrationally" afraid of anything.

EDIT: Decided to watch a clip from the movie on YouTube and gotdamn I forgot how hot Naomi Watts is.

It was actually one of the few horror movies that actually did scare me. That and Event Horizon for some reason.

I saw Ringu before I saw The Ring. While the former is generally terrifying with outstanding atmosphere and a really great build of tension, the American version goes for some jump scares and a major loss of subtlety.

That being said, no, The Ring did not scare me.
