Ive been underwhelmed with every generation graphically speaking after the PS3/360 era. The jump from console to console is barely noticeable.

I didn't know what to expect but it seems fine for a handheld. I'm just disappointed that there's no OLED model which is a far bigger flaw in my view.

Whether it's 4 or 5 TFLOPs doesn't really matter when games will simply be designed around the hardware. But I had really hoped for a better screen. Having to choose between the cheaper Switch OLED and Switch 2 isn't a good proposition to someone who skipped the last gen.

I'm otherwise happy with it in terms of graphical leaps over the original Switch.

to be fair most hands-on previews i've seen have praised the LCD screen for how nice it looks. But i get it, OLED would have been nicer. I got the OLED Switch and the first game i played on it was Metroid Dread and those colors really pop - looks amazing

I was just hoping it would have Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom at 1080p 60fps. Since we're going to get them at 1440p 60fps, I'd have to say it's exceeded my expectations. The cherry on top is how good Cyberpunk is looking on it, wasn't expecting that at all since Phantom Liberty was current gen-only.

Let's put it this way.
I put up with Switch 1 graphics until now. I play retro games with no issues. And my most powerful hardware is a XSX.
I want to see Switch 2 games run on my TV before I make a final statement. But from what I've seen, the S2 far surpasses the… not optimistic scenarios I had in mind before its reveal.

Way surpassed. The rumors leading up to release about Switch had me doubting its power.

"there are so many rumors floating around about the Switch 2, but the funniest one is about it being as powerful as a PS4 Pro 🙃"
"Developers Say Nintendo Switch 2 Dev Kits Don't Have 4K Output"

I thought it wouldn't even be as powerful as Steam Deck. While it's been 3 years since Steam Deck, I figured Nintendo would pour all their gains into achieving a smaller form factor.

Instead, they surpassed steam deck's hardware with a higher resolution screen, 4k output, smaller form factor and for just $50 more than steam deck. Great hardware and value.

Dog shit game prices though

Capabilities are slighty better than expected but i don't expect nintendo to take full advantage of that, they are still gonna make games that look like they have 5000 yen total budget even if they can make games with much higher production values.

Smart on their part to maximize profit i guess.

I'm all for being technical but you're talking about xbox one, with it's jaguar cpu, 5GB Ram available for games, GCN 1.0 based GPU to switch 2's specs?

you think they are equivocal?

really?
No. I am informed about both system's specifications (alleged/likely in Switch's case). Switch 2's CPU should be faster than a 1750 MHz clocked Jaguar per core but not order of magnitude faster (maybe around 30%). All i am saying is that Switch 2 handheld isn't far removed from Xbox One in terms of raw GPU throughput/bandwidth especially. They have the same bandwidth at 68 GB/s, Switch 2 should be more efficient at consumption and XB1 is somewhat aided by its low latency SRAM. I don't think MKW is pushing Switch 2 to its limits, and in my opinion XB1 can run it at 1080P/60 FPS. The amount of RAM won't factor in a big way in such game. Now, when docked Switch 2 is all around superior to XB1, no questions there.

Raytracing, DLSS, VRR, better audio, HDR, 1080p, 120hz, 7.9-inch screen...on a handheld.
I am still not buying one (PC Gamer here) but they far exceeded my expectations to be honest.

I kept my expectations pretty low, so I would say that the Switch 2 met my expectations for what the hardware was going to be. Let's face it here, it's still a mobile system at its' core, battery life still plays a big role in the final output of the hardware. It can do some form of 4K when docked using DLSS, the system can display 120fps on the portable screen. It was about what I expected with a few small surprises.

Well over my expectations. I was an adamant believer that Switch 2 would be weaker than Steam Deck. What they've shown is clearly more powerful than Steam Deck; not by much but the increase is obvious.

What do think about CPU and memory departments when compared as handhelds, do you think Switch 2 is superior to Steam Deck in those aspects? Are you familiar with the specs?

I had the normal Switch version, but the way people raved about OLED made it seem paltry in comparison. As if the normal version wasn't the way you were supposed to play Switch games. So I'll likely wait for the Switch 2 OLED before I dip my toes.

If you had low expectations, then it barely edges it lol

I mean what was Switch 1 performance like? X360? Of course next step would be X1/PS4 .. people act surprised it came close in some areas to those legacy consoles.

Btw PS4 released 2013, twelve years ago! Also don't bring being a handheld as limiting factor when we already have Handhelds as capable and more capable than Switch 2 right now.

He's referring to his imaginations.
No Im referring to specs dear, not feelings. Switch 2 (handheld) performance is on par with Steam deck

That's why you are getting sub-HD CP @30fps

Btw Switches are mostly used handheld as per Nintendo.

Mister Wolf Mister Wolf .. you can laugh emoji me forever, this doesn't change the hard fact I just dropped.

I thought the games would look a bit better. Mario kart looks pretty good and is around what I was expecting but we had like driveclub, infamous second son, and killzone on the ps4 and they haven't really shown that from first party. They have at least mostly surpassed Knack. Although at times I feel like Knack looks better than Donkey Kong but Donkey Kong is doing so much more.

Why would you even care if you're not interested in playing Nintendo exclusives? That is obviously the reason why you would even buy it.
Because I want to play Nintendo. Just wish they would use modern hardware. The power of switch 2 is like launching a
gamecube power level portable device in 2013. I know it's a handheld but the current handhelds wipe the floor with switch 2. and we will be stuck with this power close to a decade.

And looks at MSRP of ROG ally X 🤷‍♂️

They are terribly unbalanced handhelds by the way. LPDDR cannot feed zen cores. Those ~8-9 TFlops feels more like 3 at best, if even that.

You want to play Nintendo games? There's only one option.

Unlike Nintendo, Asus cannot subsidize the cost of the hardware, they gain nothing from game sales, they gain nothing from storefront subscription so they MUST make money on hardware. Add to that, Asus doesn't have the brand power that can help them negotiate better cheaper deals for components.

A similarly specced Switch 2 to Rog Ally would cost Nintendo less than Asus any time of the day, plus the points mentioned above.

But yet here we are ... Nintendo usual cheapness!

The cost of Switch 2 hardware is fine. Its a substantial upgrade over steam deck. ROG Ally x is so inneficient that it needs a bulky as fuck battery and the hardware is also bulky like what feels like a MadCatz product. Peoples are overlapping outrage for $80 MKW with hardware.

ROG Ally X is comically unbalanced its a piece of shit engineering wise. For what is roughly PS5 TFlops on paper, it fumbles down to barely above Steam deck's 1.6TFlop at 720p

Its a joke of an hardware. ROG Ally X is the peak of what's wrong with PC handhelds in one neat package. Trying to brute force its way to greatness and so inefficient compared to Steam deck. Steam deck is way better engineered.

And you're still stuck with FSR 2-3 pixel soup on those PC handhelds.

nintendo had to pay nvidia tax for DLSS which will be much better 🤷‍♂️

Are you referring to this Digital Trends video? Because their conclusion and findings contradict everything you said, you seem like you picked some benchmarks that aid your narrative...

Digital Trends video

Also I have seen CP benchmark where Ally X outperforms SD by 42% for the same setting

I don't know why people are saying Switch 2 is a "substantial" upgrade over Deck when we have already saw that Hogwarts Legacy and SF6 have significant cutbacks. Deck's running the next gen code while Switch 2 is running the last gen config.

Once I saw Cyberpunk and found out that it was a 7 week old build, that's all I needed to know. For my purposes of using it primarily as a handheld device I don't need much more than that.

These benchmarks are running rog ally and steam deck at the same 15w power mode. If you run rog ally at 25w it obliterates steam deck.

I played black ops 6 very high 1080p at 70 fps, Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p high settings 40-50fps and 720p over 60 fps. Im Playing elden ring right now at 1080p high settings with 40-50fps (60fps locked at 720p)

And if you run Rog ally at 30w plugged in, or in a dock connected to a tv then you get probably another 25% performance boost on top of that.

I bought The Rog ally z1 extreme for £399 last black Friday. Also picked up a 100w mini powerbank that doubles my play time. On custom 20w power i can get great performance on AAA games and get well over 4 hours game time with the powerbank plugged in.

My brother dipped when I showed him the evidence. Lol

Can someone well informed on Nvidia's architectures confirm if the leak's (T239) max TF/compute figures are calculated using Ampere's 'inflated' double rate fp32 method? If i remember correctly this was mentioned in latest DF direct, this would partly (as an indicator among others) explain why they stating (comparable) 'PS4 level of performance when docked' with such confidence.

It's the DLSS. PS4 level of performance if PS4 had access to dlss upscaling.

WOW, by double the wattage you crawl above Steam deck. 8.6 TFlops APU vs Steam deck 1.6 TFlops

Good job!

much-efficient-so.jpg

Exactly like I said. Rog ally X is the representation of the wrong direction PC handhelds are taking. Trying to brute force its way with stupid ass big APUs that are bottlenecked and inefficient.
