Diddy Kong Racing Appreciation Thread

I was just playing this again recently and realized that it still is the greatest single-player kart racing game ever. The track design is excellent, there is a good amount of challenge (silver coin, etc) and the single player lasted for a long time (There was even a whole second adventure). The overworld itself had some cool areas and secret spots. I still think it holds up today as the best, I wish some developer would spend some time making a single-player kart racer as deep and lengthy as this was.

I'd be curious to hear what other people's opinion on greatest single-player kart racing game are and why. There are plenty of other contenders (Mario Kart, Speed Punks, CTR...)

That game is one of my favorite N64 games. Very kiddy yet so great. I managed to get all 47 balloons and unlock TT. Then I found out there was a second adventure! I never did complete it but maybe I will someday.

As far as single player games, DKR was engrossing and time-consuming. But it's in the wrong genre, really. Kart games are measured by their multiplayer aspect. Single player is pretty much secondary. It'd be like declaring a game the best multi-player platform game... well ok, but it's kind of missing the point, if the game doesn't deliver where it's supposed to.

I don't wanna be ants at a picnic here... but even so I'll take MK grand prix's.

yeah, I quite liked this game... specially the whole exploration side of it...

Just knowing that I will most likely never see a sequel to this wonderful game almost sends me into a murderous rage. Almost.

Remember the trailer at E3 2001 where you raised your own animals and raced them? Damn that would of been pimp.

I hate this game I was shit at it and I wanted to kill all the shitty characters Rare spent a minute thinking of. Fuck u tick tock u fucking tool

I see your point, but I don't see why kart racers as opposed to all other racers have to be measured only by multiplayer. Stuff like Outrun 2 and Ridge Racer aren't really judged by multiplayer. I think there is room for single-player kart racing it's just that it hasn't been focused on much. That's what makes DKR so cool. Stuff like the boss races, the overworld exploration, and the silver coin challenges merge the racing and adventure elements in a cool way for solo players.

Far, far better than MK64. I even preferred the multiplayer, though I realise that's an unpopular opinion.

I completely beat this game -- unlocked all the backwards tracks, beat all the backwards tracks, et cetera. It was a lot of fun.

Big complaint: the framerate, like most of Rare's N64 offerings, was absolutely terrible.

Oh man I loved DKR!

I spent hours and hours playing the game collecting those stupid balloons :lol
I had a blast though, the tracks were great and the music was very catchy. Not to mention the multiplayer mode was fantastic as well, I loved doing plane battles on Fire Mountain :D

DKR is another Rare classic from the N64 era I'll never forget

I hate this game because my stepsister beat me in it all the fucking time.

Before that, I loved it because of the overworld and how big it was. Reusing the tracks for different vehicle types was really clever.

Didn't this game first introduce Conker the Squirrel?

I spent a lot of time on DKR.

Indeed it did he was one of my best characters. I compared my track times with the ones in N64 magazine and I had better times in like 4 or 5 of the tracks not including mirrored tracks. This is one of the most complete racers I've ever played along with Beetle Adventure Racing.

Adventure racing games need to make a comeback.

Kiddy games suck.

This game had some series frustration. The last boss you basically had to have a flawless run to beat him. Either I suck at games or a kid would have a bitch of a time ever beating this bad boy to 100%.

Apperciate. This game went from annouce to ship in two-three months. A stunt that has never been pulled off as successfully again, as far as I know - both quality and sales wise.

Awesome challenging game. Fuck Tick tock indeed. What character did you guys use? I used the turtle, (forgot his name.)

I've used them all, but I used the tiger and Diddy the most. The first time you face the final boss (the car race) I remember having to use Banjo for his speed, though (he was pretty crap for the normal races, IMO).

MK64 was king of multiplayer but DKR is the best single-player kart racing experience ever. I remember breaking many controllers because of those damn bosses.

I totally love this game, i enjoyed way more than mario kart, even the multiplayer mode.

I really really wish a new DKR be made, too bad RARE is now MS's property :(

ANyone else feel that the game was kind of slow? I dunno, i loved the game but always felt the game lacked speed to fully enjoy levels.

Well half the team went on to make Mickey's Speedway USA, which was pretty poo, so maybe it wouldn't even matter if they did make a sequel.

utterly pathetic characters. totally awesome music. I loved the coin challenges and the adventure aspect of the game.

Great game. I loved the emphasis on adventure. I remember continuously tapping the A button during the race against the last boss for some reason. I think it makes you go faster, and it was the only way I could win.

Was Diddy Kong Racing the first game with the whole you have to release the button during a turbo to get max boost. I know a lot of games have it now but DKR is the first I remember it from.

Yep tons and tons of depth in this game. One of the best racing games ever and had some of the best graphics that gen. I wonder if they could make a 60fps version on the DS? :)

DKR f'in rocked. A kart racer with three different vehicle types, awesome single player, great multiplayer, wonderful track design.. it had it ALL! The hovercraft/tube thingy rocked.

I used Diddy. I remember thinking he seemed like the best balance of speed and handling.

You're right, and I think it definitely has to do with the game's framerate issues I mentioned earlier. I swear the thing ran at 20FPS or less most of the time.

Ah yes, let's not forget some of the classic characters, either.. TipTup( the Turtle).. Conker, of course... Banjo ("I'm Banjo, wwwwahhhh")... Pipsy (the mouse).. etc. :D

Such a great game, sony need to somehow somehow! twist microsofts hand and get a sequal for the psp, a mariokart killer. Why is there no sequal announced for the 360 yet? its Rare's biggest franchise that they can use!

I'll probably pick up an Xbox 360 with FYE credit just for PDZero anyways.. but if Rare finally decides to release some sequels this gen., and they include the following games.. I will be forever in their debt:

DKR (or some sort of variation on it)
Banjo
Conker
PDZero (I know this WILL be released, I'm just adding it to my list because it will assuredly rock)
If they could somehow secure a GoldenEye license...... somehow... my life would be complete.

Ones I wouldn't buy unless they were cheap:
Jet Force Gemini
Blast Corps
Killer Instinct

Get the fuck out.

Kidding, but seriously, Jet Force Gemini ruled all, and a sequel from Rare would put me forever in their debt.

DKR is one of my favorite kart racers. So damn fun, and so many things to do. I played the hell out of it when I was younger. Lots of multiplayer and lots of exploration. Brings back lots of memories.

Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy Jet Force Gemini, but not as much as the other games I mentioned above it. I think I bought it for real cheap from EB right before the Cube came out, so maybe I was tainted by next generation goodness at the time or something.. :lol

Yea that was a problem for a few Rare games released late in the 64's cycle. JFG, Perfect Dark, Banjo 2, and of course, Conker: BFD. Almost happened to them this time too, good thing they delayed Kameo and Perfect Dark to the 360 (and whatever the hell else you know was in development for the Xbox 1).

By the by, how many of the other characters actually appeared in other Rare games? Diddy, Banjo, and Conker obviously, but I'm pretty sure Tip Tup (or whatever that turtle's name was) cameoed in Banjo Kazooie, am I right? Anyone one else?

I believe he was in B-K.. yeah. It was that mini-game type thing where there's a bunch of baby turtles that you hop on to make music notes, I believe? Something like that.. it's been a while since I've played that game, damn.. :lol
