Diddy Kong Racing Appreciation Thread

Thank you Mama Smurf! I love D. Wise! :D

Goldeneye's Aztec music still haunts me. Took me so long to "solve" it in 00Agent mode.

Can i also ask for someone to upload remixes by a guy named "Petrocity". He remixed the Bramble Scramble and Swamp themes from Donkey Kong Country 2. You know he's amazing when he's remixed the Swamp theme to sound INCREDIBLY soothing to listen to.

You can find him from that Over Clocked remix website but I don't know how to use their bittorrent.

One of the best racers of all time. I managed to unlock everything after months of cursing, playing just "one more game" for several hours, and all that. To everyone who said it was too kiddy hasn't played through the whole game. There were some really tough parts to it.

Yeah that game was great.

All my friends wouldn't touch it because of the kiddy factor.

Didn't this game first introduce Conker the Squirrel?
It was his first appearance, but I know that the original Conker game (12 Tails) was announced before it. Same goes for Banjo, I think... IIRC, it was a "surprise" game and wasn't shown at the E3 preceding its release.

The only flak the game gets is this glitch where if you repeatedly tap the accelerator, you can go OVER your top speed. Yes, this is true and was never fixed in the later versions of the game.

I, among many unlocked all the stuff in the game, though if you want 'sequels' of sorts to DKR, I wholeheartedly reccomend Mickey's Speedway USA. Great turns, plenty unlockables (Ludwig Von Drake owns joo) Banjo Pilot...eh...not really, but that used to be Diddy Kong Pilot, and a few things from the original version survived the Banjo makeover. Still worth a look.

Still a great game, though.

Yeah, MK64 had the superior multiplayer, but for folks like me who usually play solo this was quite keen.

Yeah, Banjo-Kazooie was delayed, so DKR was pushed ahead as the replacement game for the holidays.

I really really wish a new DKR be made, too bad RARE is now MS's property :(
Sure it wouldn't be called Diddy Kong Racing... but other than Diddy and the Kremling I don't think there's anything they couldn't use again.

Damn i loved this game! Great mix between racing and adventure, thats not seen much.

Rare was awesome back in days. We should have a Rare appreciation!

- Diddy kong racing
- Banjo
- Blast corps
- Goldeneye
- Perfect dark

best single player kart racer. they could make me buy an xbox 360 just by releasing a game looking as good as the GC Donkey Kong Racing teaser (aka Sabreman Stampede)...ando of course with those animal riding gameplay mechanics.

Excellent game! It was the game to get on Christmas of 97 -there was nothing else either. But seriously this is when Rare was at its prime. This one, Goldeneye, B-T and Jet Force Gemini were my favorite Rare games. Oh Rare, where did you go wrong?

huzkee: yeah!

I'm thinking abotu my entire N64 life - during that whole console era, a number of things really impressed me (technically), and nearly always it was because of a Rare game. Mario64 and pilotwings were amazing, and MK64 was much more fun than DKR in multiplayer (and it's BECAUSE of rubber band powerups system), but when DKR came out, I was like, 'no way! - fully polygonal characters and backgrounds'. It was technically amazing, and sounded great. Nearly every Rare game that came out pushed the boundary on what was possible, graphically. I still remember seeing a screenshot of Goldneye 4-player, and thinking (after having played Turok) that it was ajoke - it must've been impossible to get a game look that great - 4x!

DKR, Goldeneye, Banjo Kazooie, Blast Corps, Banjo Tooie, Perfect Dark, Conker - all technically amazing.

great game. Goddamn Rare for putting that "kids giggling" sound effect right at the beginning during the logos. I could never get my friends to play it after hearing that.

I love that game, one of my fave games, by far the best kart racer out there, the multi-player was very fun too if I recall :D I forgot their names, but they were such a blast and great scenarios! Single player was even more fun, just a blast to play, and the whole exploration theme, boss races etc, it was a very challenging game.

Oh yes, I did unlock T.T. and owned every corner in that game.

DKR was the first game worth getting an N64 for.

Haha, because of this thread, I just went and plugged in my N64 and had a quick blast of each of my favourite N64 games...

Starfox64 was fun - I'm recalling the awesome points system, trying to hit 5 or more ships with a charged shot to maximise points (which you had to do to open up different levels). And the secrets! I just melted back into the controls. I remember the Independence day level, and wowing at the 50 ships on screen. Now Xbox comes out and they claim thousands or something.... maybe I'm just getting cynical, but I'm just not as excited any more.

Perfect Dark music was amazing, as was DKR, and Banjo Kazooie. Oh yeah Jet Force Gemini. Haven't plaeyd the games for years, but busting them out again brought back memories. Funnily, Rogue Squadron was very familiar - probably because it was one of the last games I played fully, but also probably because it's so damned similar to Rogue Leader.

Rare games had some control issues, but by and large, I slipped right back in. You can say anything you want about Rare, but for me, they made some of the defining games of the generation. Most of them were clones of games they never pioneered, but often they were a vast improvement in many areas, most notable graphics and sound.

Ah, Rare. I don't have an Xbox, but if PD turns out anyhwere near like the first one, I may just get a 360.

i loved DKR.

RARE basically owned the N64. they just made one great game after another for the system.

ok here it goes. hopefully i dont ruing anyone elses life like this soundeffect ruined mine. ah fuck it, i want all of you to suffer along with me.

recycled sound effects suck.

the "kids giggling" at the beginning of DKR (which i loved at the time) is one of the WORST offenders.

i have heard this sound effect used over and over in tons of other shit. in fact i just heard it in a commercial last night. i was going to make a post about recycled sound effects to try and purge this curse from my mind, but as long as these effects are recycled i will be haunted until the end of my days.

so suffer along with me, fuckers. suffer like G did.

DKR is quite probably the game that made me buy a N64. At that time I only played SF2, Super Mario Kart and a couple shooters/platfformers on my SNES...I can say that I was about to abandon videogames. One day a friend invited me to his house (forum poster Blabala) and then he showed me his new system: a Nintendo 64. He showed me a variety of games but the one that impressed me the most was DKR. It was the nicest videogame I had ever seen...So next week I sold my SNES and all my games and bought a N64 (6 months later I regreted it since the system barelly had fighters, shooters or decent racing games and I missed my SNES). Anyways DKR was always to me the joy of the system.

I always considered it superior to MK64 but well that wasn't very hard to accomplish since MK64 was a disgrace after the almighty SMK we saw on the SNES.

-Tons of tracks, with an excellent design and tons of elements that made you feel in situation.

-Awesome Soundtrack. It's simply awesome to play this game since the music is charming like no other.

-Fantastic Graphics. One of the best N64 games when it comes to graphics. And the framerate wasn't that bad like in other Rare games !

-Gameplay, gameplay ! Either if you play alone or with friends this games takes the entire cake. Simply genious. Specially when using the hovercraft or the plane...I always felt that the cart managed like shit.

I never owned the game but borrowed off a friend and played right through the game. Really fantastic single player. Definately the best single player kart game I've ever played. Love the use of 3 vechicles, great variety of tracks, music etc etc.

However, for some reason the game just wasn't that fun in multiplayer. MK64 was just far superior. I think it was to do with the weapons and "physics" of MK64 that made it much more fun. Firing and hitting someone with a green shell or driving through them with a invincibility star really sent the victim flying and was much more satisfing. The powersliding/hopping and feel of the karts was just that much better too.

I loved DKR. I really hope that Rare can make a sequel of sorts on the X360. I suppose Nintendo owns the rights to Diddy Kong (do they?), so they'd have to change the name, but I want it to be a true sequel in every other sense.

In 1997, Rare was the greatest company on the face of the earth. They brought us GoldenEye, and Diddy Kong Racing.

It the best single-player kart game ever, for sure. I don't think I did the mirrored quest, because I'd learnt all the tracks so well that it just pissed me off, but I unlocked everything else.

Now I've got the urge to play all these Rare games again... DKR, Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie, Goldeneye, Jet Force Gemini, Perfect Dark, some perverted side of me even misses Donkey Kong 64. I miss the old Rare, that used to make games.
