Digital Foundry: Cyberpunk 2077 On Switch 2 Works Well - But What About The Phantom Liberty?

God when will this game stop being analysed.
gonna cry tobey maguire GIF

Impossible. Switch 2 uses the current gen textures. The results are even closer to ps5 as they are to series s. Let alone the fzster storage and much mor ram. There is no way ps4 could even get close to this with optimized code. The difference between them are huge on most levels. There are clearly some things scaled down but compared to the other things, its clear that switch is a series s lite where it has the benefit of games that could even pass the series s depending on the cpu usage. Thats insane for a portable handheld.

Its good that DF aknowledge its no near ps4 quality. Anyone who still say ps4 experience hw is official a troll. The facts are in.

textures being better than Series S comes down to the fact that the Series S' biggest design mistake was the small memory pool.

settings are in fact at parts lower than PS4, as seen in the shadow cascade setting.
the traffic and pedestrian setting is also PS4 equivalent and not near Series S.

it is very clearly closer to PS4 in every way except textures. similar internal resolution, broadly similar settings, similar performance.
it's in essence the PS4 version, but running without the major issues of the PS4 version (which are down to CPU and storage speed constraints)

I think you aren't really looking at facts.
so let's summarise the facts:

resolution = broadly PS4 Level. Series S is dynamic 1440p with 1200p lowest. more than 2x the average resolution of the Switch 2.

shadow settings = trading punches with PS4

draw distance = trading punches with PS4

pedestrian/traffic = PS4 Level

performance = a bit above PS4. XSS has a decently stable 60fps mode and is in another league here.
in essence, on Series S you either run at more than 2x the resolution, or at a similar resolution but 2x the framerate + higher settings (aside textures)

1080p~800p dynamic res, 60fps in the alley shootout test.

textures = above XSS due to the bigger memory pool

so what exactly is Series S level here except the textures being better?
is it the fact that it runs at half the framerate and a lower resolution all at the same time? is that Series S level? I think not.

it has DLSS, which lets it punch above its weight. but if you actually look at how it runs and which settings it's using, it's very clearly closer to PS4.

Were you expecting a PS5 portable? 🤷‍♂ This video just demonstrates what the majority of people here expected…. Between PS4 and Series S…

So, the base game OK, the DLC not OK.

Yeah, Tom nail in the DLC part, about the DLC not releasing in the last gen and thats why the DLC break the NS2 performance. There is no code or base line to backup the NS2 in this case.

A version halfway between PS4 and Series S, in some things it is better (textures) but in others worse (less traffic and people on the streets) and also its performance is much worse than Series S, the expansion is too big for Switch 2 considering the poor performance.

That list:

If you have no interest in MKW and you already own(ed) the original Switch, Switch 2 is an incredible waste of money. After putting hundreds of hours into the Zelda games, I could puke if I had to play that game again, improved visuals or not.
CP77 is on 2. because there is nothing else to buy. I can't remember when a console launch lineup was this bad. Probably never.

What's silly about it? Steam Deck is a trillion year old mini PC that is bazillion times more capable than the Switch 2 in terms of functionality. People that were expecting the Deck being as capable as a dedicated gaming console in terms of gaming were morons.

gen ahead image qualitimes switch 2 charmpione

I've pointed this out a million times, it is not. XeSS 1.3 and DLSS 3 are extremely close in quality, especially on such a small screen. As anyone who actually does PC gaming knows.

Even the video you posted as an attempted "gotcha" has the Steam Deck running at over 50% higher FPS. Now what do you think happens if you use XeSS, bump up the settings, and lock to 30fps? Never mind you can actually lock to or extremely close to 30fps, even in the most demanding section of Phantom Liberty.

But please, leave your laughing emoji on this post so we can both move on.

And now cut everything out of that list that you can (already) play elsewhere (and way better versions), and you have basically zero games *slow claps*

shadow settings = trading punches with PS4

draw distance = trading punches with PS4

pedestrian/traffic = PS4 Level

performance = a bit above PS4. XSS has a decently stable 60fps mode and is in another league here.
in essence, on Series S you either run at more than 2x the resolution, or at a similar resolution but 2x the framerate + higher settings (aside textures)

You're still clinging to the idea that Switch 2 is closer to PS4 than Xbox Series S. You keep framing DLSS as a kind of cheating method after it produces better graphical IQ than Series S. I'd like to remind you once again, we are living in a post-processing era, and DLSS is sitting at the top of the hierarchy, and your resolution comparison is outdated and laughable at this stage.

The Deck runs the game significantly better at similar visual quality. Well actually better visual quality, but that is due to the OLED and not the actual underlying hardware.

This guys just can't take L… From Lol The Switch is going to be less powerful than a base PS4 to saying that DLSS is cheating is something else 😂. Even DF took the L with dignity.

I don't understand why anyone would want this version of the game. If you need portability just stream it or remote play or something. Why settle for this.
If Switch 2 is your only gaming device, that port is fine. Or if you need portability at any cost and you can't afford the Steam Deck. Objectively, the target audience for this particular version should be very small. But we all know that Nintendo fanboys have nothing in common with objectivity, have they?

Okay, I get your point. I'd never go with anything less than an OLED screen. It's just day and night compared to LCD.

He forgot that image quality is one of the most important aspects in gaming. He kept trying to downplay the importance of having good IQ over higher resolution. Even Richard Leadbetter from Digital Foundry stated, "Why does it matter at the end (internal rendering res) when the final output is far superior to the native version?" when analyzing DLSS for Switch 2.

wow switch 2 look soooo much better

I don't care if this thing uses 1W, worse than PS4 performance in frame rate and resolution for a five year old game, and on a nasty LCD screen like that....if anything, DF were very kind.

I mean, I have a Switch 2 and I like it a lot. Still wouldn't buy this. I don't know many people who want to play Cyberpunk lite on a Nintendo console.

The 40fps mode seems kinda pointless. And, despite all the improvements over PS4, it unfortunately has the same NPC and traffic density settings which makes the city kinda dead. Dogtown also seems to be a mess. Respectable effort, but I'd still recommened any other moden version instead unless you really don't have any other choice.

It's crazy to me that people even consider playing these games on lower end hardware.

I've held of on Cyberpunk (which I bought for 10 dollars) until it gets a proper PS5 Pro patch and even when that happens I'll have to buy it again because I got it for 10 dollars only because Best Buy was doing a clearance sale on it.

Hogwarts Legacy was OKAY on PS5 Pro, I couldn't imagine playing it on a Switch 2 let alone a Switch.

Let's pretend that DLSS not exists then 😅.

[Nintendo Fans]: "But..but where are all the NPC's?"

{Nintendo Executives staring at the bank account]: "Oh they're out there alright ;)"

The other thing is I don't understand how anyone can game at 30fps in a shooter. It just makes no sense to me. I could maybe understand someone who's really casual and doesn't understand framerates, but this has to be the bottom of the barrel way to play it in terms of new hardware.

Switch 2 haters moving the goalposts list:

-Is going to be a Switch Pro less powerful than the PS4
-Is going to be less powerful than the Steamdeck
-Steamdeck is a 2022 handheld and the Switch is $450 Great achievement.
-Is going to be less powerful than the PS4 Pro lol keep dreaming
-Of course is going to be better than consoles from 2013
-120hz screen for a Nintendo Handheld lolol Hopium
-No way is going to be close to the Series S 0% chance

-Lol… is Running PS5/Series 60fps games at 30fps … Not surprised at all<- We are here.
My 🔮 works better than i expected… Damn.

Thanks for the advertisement. Do you have any thoughts on the DF assessment? No?

Yes, it's impressive that a weak mobile device can play this in some form, but I still find it confusing people thinking it looking / performing better than a PS4 is a massive win.
The PS4 was released in 2013 and was in development since 2008, so that's about 11 years between systems and technology advances if compared to the Switch 2 which was apparently in development in 2019.

11 years in this technology space is a giant time in terms of hardware, but more importantly and for the Switch 2, A.I. has advanced even more and quicker in terms of things like DLSS.

Celebrate the Switch 2 for it can do, but I think that argument is a bit silly. I personally don't enjoy games at such low resolution and frame rate in 2025, but again, if this is your only way to play it, I'm sure you'll not care and enjoy the hell out it.

Great post. ^ And this is really the most important point - at the end of the day, "how it looks" is pretty important in making a visual comparison

Srems that you are one of the....

Its clearly like df already stated not even comparible with ps4 as it succeed even series s. Not only the faster storage is a big deal, not only the much more ram, or the fact that the gpu and cpu are even in handheld above ps4, the other aspects makes it clear that its near series s level. You can troll all you want, this isnt even a discussion, but a fact. DF now confirms this aswell. Just stop trying to proof a ghost

Oof... The image quality is complete dogshit.
Be it docked or handheld it's heavily compromised. That game truly wasn't meant to run on PS4-class hardware.

Great result for a handheld port, and especially for a launch title.

Probably the best showcase so far for the leap from Switch 1 to Switch 2.

Good to see DF's pre-launch excessive negativity on Switch 2 seems to be gone.

The dlc has issues on ever platform.
I still need to start playing the game, but even with a less stable framerate, most of the time in the dlc runs fine as well. You can check

How is this impressive? It's barely above Steam Deck from 3 years back and will be forever stuck at this performance level.
