Digital foundry: DLSS 4 on Nvidia RTX 5080 First Look: Super Res + Multi Frame-Gen on Cyberpunk 2077 RT Overdrive!

Nvidia unveiled the RTX 50-series range of GPUs at CES 2025, but we had the chance to take a quick look at DLSS 4 running on an RTX 5080 over the preceding holiday break. Here's a look at DLSS 4 super resolution and ray reconstruction improvements stacked up against the existing technology, plus a look at the new Frame-Gen 3x and 4x options and some frame-rate, consistency and latency comparisons.

A few notes: Super resolution and ray reconstruction comparisons taken with frame generation disabled and with CP2077 post-process features (chromatic aberration, film grain, motion blur etc) disabled on RT Overdrive mode. All b-roll uses frame-gen 3x, RT Overdrive mode but again with post-process features disabled for improved clarity. Frame-rate clips captured on RT Overdrive but with film grain disabled for better image quality on YouTube.

Eh, FG is good enough. What I'm interested in is the reduced latency provided by Reflex 2. Combined with regular frame gen, we're potentially looking at a latency lower than native, not merely equal or in the same ballpark. Of course, you can always not turn on frame gen to get an even lower latency, but at a certain point, you're hitting massive diminishing returns. Same for multi frame gen. I don't care much for 300fps.

Shame CD Project give up red engine so easily in favor of UE.

Nvidia still using for their tech demos.

Probably the best visuals I've ever seen in an actual video game.

Cool but I have already played through cyberpunk 5 times now. Why do I need it for new games?

Same will be applicable to new games, but CyberPunk is still referenced heavily for NVIDIA benchmarks as it's the single most visually impressive open world game to date. The aesthetic also really helps make all reflections and lighting "pop" which is what NVIDIA is really pushing.

Well damn. Significantly better image quality, almost no added latency, shit ton of extra frames that look good enough..not bad.

Multi frame gen adds a bit of latency, but not much.

Might be useful for lower-end cards. It really hits the point of diminishing returns for higher-end ones. On the one hand, what's 7ms of extra latency? On the other hand, how much do I care going from 120 to 240fps? Not sure if that's with Reflex 2 though. I assume it is. However, I've never witnessed 200fps, so maybe I'm underestimating how good it looks in motion.

Yes the DLSS 4 with it's new technique being available to every RTX card owner was the megaton of the presentation, it's looking much better, very solid even on Performance mode, wonder how Balance or Quality ones will look.

Sounds like they liked FGen, 55-60ms input latency isn't bad, but it's not the 35ms NVidia showed, DF says drivers weren't ready yet tho, we'll see.

Very impressive overall

Oh, btw - is DLSS 4 a 50xx exclusive thing?
No. The suite is available to all RTX GPUs. Not all RTX GPUs support the same features though. The new multi frame generation is only available on RTX 50 cards. Frame generation is available only on RTX 40 cards and above. The rest is available on every RTX GPU.

CNN is a network that was "stolen" from real world.
Actual eyes use it.
Stable Diffusion uses it.

So uh oh doh.

It doesn't mean other approaches could not be better in certain scenarios, but "CNN is dead" is dumdum.

PS
Why is it that the first review comes from PF?
Does it have anything to do with them being b*tches shilling for NV, is it just a coincidence?

The frametime of 4x being better than 2x is a big deal

I'm buying 5080, fuck it

I can toggle 2x for games that get into 120 fps range and it's future proof with 4x when games start hitting hard.

Sounds really cool. I don't really care that much about FPS above 144hz, but this new Frame gen might really extend the life of a 50-series card and make it easier to skip a generation or two.

Of course Nvidia will bring out new stuff in the future, but you'd think it means you should be able get both frames and ray-tracing for quite some time at 4k.

They are the most popular outlet for this stuff. Why wouldn't they do it?

They are the most popular outlet for this stuff.
Oh, that explains the delay in deliveries to non-shilling reviewers?
Silly me.

PS
Just checked that Gamers Nexus has nearly twice as many subscribers as PF.
So, yeah, "most popular" for "that stuff".

Gamers Nexus mostly does hardware reviews not deep dive technical graphics stuff.

Who else does coverage like them? Hardware Unboxed in the very rare occasion?

Besides they get exclusive access to everything all the time. Just recently they had an exclusive interview with Mark Cerny, had tons of exclusive footage, and had early access to PS5 Pro coverage. Same for the Xbox Series X way before it launched, they even got invited to MS headquarters for that one.

Maybe you should be asking why AMD is not trying to drum up hype and interest in FSR4 and RDNA4 other then sending outlets a few slides?

My guess is it's either embarrassingly behind, or nowhere near ready.

It took AMD around a year to get out frame generation, after announcing it. Even then it was only two games with varying degrees of quality.

I love my 7900XT, but I'm ready to go back to the team that's blazing new trails.

Who else does coverage like them?
Everyone and their grandma does such coverage, as for "like them" let me list what it entails to be "like them":

Huang's unhinged marketing: 8k gaming with 3090!
PF: oh my god, you are so great (engage in buttkissing)

Huang UM: 3080 is 2 times faster than 2080
PF (being Huang's bitches, get "super early super preview" cards before anyone else): yeah, see, nearly kinda sorta like 2 times!

AMD released FSR 1 that at highest quality settings is referred to as "close to native" by all major outlets.
PF: loses shit finding ways to corrupt the image, finally does it via developer game settings, eventually faking the results.
DOUBLES DOWN after caught.

Q: why does PF get green scheisse before anyone else?
A: oh, it's because they are "most popular"

Yeah, sure, ladies. That's the reason.

Oh grow up and stop being a delusional fanboy for a graphics card company. Your takes are borderline unhinged.

So impressed that Nvidia keep pushing the state of the art on DLSS (the actual super-sampling/upscaling in particular).

JUST when AMD decided to get on board with AI based upscaling, Nvidia says "lol good luck!" as they leap ahead again even before AMD gets to market with their years-too-late "me too" offering.

I don't even want Nvidia to have this kind of monopoly power, but this is exactly how they've earned it. Sad to say, but true.

Oh, fucking really? Which one of the THREE incidents listed?

Why did PF get cards for review before anyone else again? This sort of uncovered idiocy in responses is troubling.

That dude llien llien has been having a meltdown for a whole day. The news of the RTX cards and AMD essentially throwing the towel broke him.

I'll skip this gen - I just got a 4070 Ti Super. I'll update my PCU/RAM/Motherboard instead.

And go for the 6070 Ti Super in three years.

Should have listened to those 2 months ago telling you upgrading from a 4060ti to a 4070ti super wasn't a great upgrade when the 5000 series so close.

But then you were saying the 4070ti super was 25% better than the 5070.

Way too many artifacts in that video. How much of that is caused by mfg and how much is caused by the new cnn, I don't know. As its stands, it's pretty bad.

In what world is it a smart decision to do so before seeing what competitor brought?

Because without showing your cards, peoples are already trying to find how to use bots to get a blackwell GPU later this month and AMD is not even on the radar?

Hype for their first ML upscaler that will probably not even beat DLSS 2?

Leaving your AIBs on the CES 2025 showfloor with RDNA 4 cards that they cannot even talk about nor say the price?

As awkward as Dustborn booth at TGS
