[Digital Foundry] Hands-On With Steam Machine: Valve's Beautiful PC/Console - Specs, Impressions And More

they basically say in the video it'll be worse than base ps5. and thats main platform for every dev.
they actually target and optimize for it.

on pc every other release is by design an unoptimized mess of a port, relying on brute force, which makes alex throw tantrums with 5090 and ryzen9.
imagine this thing trying to run those games.

will also be fun watching same people crying about ps5pro price, justifying $700+ for this anemic pos in 2026, when ps6 running circles around it for a cheaper price will be just around the corner.

yeah, unless this is sub $400, its pure scam job.

Windows has more than 30 years of technical debt, there is absolutely no way they can make a generational leap without leaving the older hardware and dependencies behind. It's just not going to happen. A small tweak here and there, but nothing major.

Suprisingly enough I see PS5 Digital for 437€ on Amazon, I was shocked . As for Series S - nobody buys that even when it can probably go 249€ on sale so...

Then it will introduce all the complexities of building your own machine, which people buying this do not want, that's exactly why they are buying a pre-made PC.

True that. I'd be one of those because while I did have some great years of PC gaming I also had plenty of headaches because of said complexities. I am quite interested in the next Xbox and really hope it turns out well.

Maybe MS got wind this was happening and thought, what brings us the most money. We need to just give up on consoles and pivot to try and stop this impacting Windows too much. I think the majority of gamers would move to a valve system and move away from Windows if they could and saw a performance uplift.

They have nothing to fear. All the talk of Linux being more performant is just a bunch of bullshit:

You were the one imagining I put the threshold on Nintendo or Sony numbers. I put it more closely to other Valve options.

Yes but 94% or the Steam users have Windows and I want this to succeed so I can get rid of it in the desktop space quicker. And I say quicker because it's going to happen no matter what since Valve is working on it. But a better machine would have accelerated this sooooo much.
Windows will always be a part of 90% of gaming PCs. It's absolutely ridiculous to expect anything other government intervention to break that up.

FWIW, most of the games that blow up on PC aren't AAAA console targeted games. They are games that have a very wide range of graphic optimizations and gameplay styles you don't really get on console.

I don't think Valve is too worried about this thing not running Assassins Creed Shadows or whatever at PS5 levels.

Pretty much, it's a PC. What do you think happens if I buy the least popular mobo or GPU, even if the company that made it goes under (lol Valve won't over SM/SD), they will stop working even if they're still using the same intel and nvidia and whatever chips and drivers and I'll be out of luck? The only reason to regret anything PC is if the parts blow up or the buyer's own mistake, like not checking specs/performance imagining it will outdo a Ryzen X3D + 5090 (as in playing every new AAA game for x years, it will work for many years for software for its own spec level regardless) for peanuts.

But yeah obviously it can be a failure on Valve's expectations, but we don't know what those are (and if they even include sale numbers or just promoting more mini PC options in the PC market like the Steam Deck appears to have promoted more portable PC options to be around), and your imaginary PS5 Digital or Steam Deck (like what if it had sold even less, would you still present that as the threshold or skip it, would you have called it DOA or what threshold make it escape that fate for you, even if its users enjoy it?) or any threshold you pull out of thin fart air have 0 bearing.
Veeeeeeeery long way to say that no matter what it sells it's not DOA. I'd have bought one with not even a 9070, a 9060 and 12GB of VRAM and they had me no matter the price. And I guess many others that don't want a downgrade from a PS5.

People have proved once and again that if presented with a more streamlined product they'll choose that. Enterprise world is lost. We're chained to Windows to the end of the times. But average Joe that just wants to play its Steam library? What need for windows they have when they have (in 2035) a plethora of machines that run equal or better, are already prebuilt and have not the hassle of Windows? I guess we'll see in a few years if Valve manages to put drivers up to date.

Well then Valve needs to get out of their bubble and put this product on store shelves so the average Joe has the ability to just stroll in and buy one. I just don't see a world where windows OS doesn't dominate 90+% of all pc gaming hardware.

Valve ain't gonna pull it off before they go public and when that happens it's a dead dream.

The specs make it closer to a series s and than a ps5 taking into consideriation vram and cu's so the price is going to be really important.

A PS5 digital is 399 a series s is 299.

The GPU has basically the same performance as the PS5's GPU, maybe even a little better. The CPU is considerably more powerful.

I know this is console war bait, but the usual shader compilation issues aren't a problem on SteamOS with Proton, since Proton notes every permutation and compiles them on first launch and on Valve supported hardware it even downloads the shader cache ahead of time. Combine it with the slim nature of Gamescope it's what allows the Steam Deck to punch way above it's weight.

Garbage specs. 5 years after PS5's launch and you still cant beat its specs? Go get a real job. Also, 512gb ssd. What a joke Valve has turned into. maybe Gabe can get off his yacht and start taking an interest in his business instead of eating caviar out of hookers asses all day.

Maybe is garbage specs for a Windows machine, but not for a SteamOS.

Guess what, you can have better better performance at a better price: it's called Sony Playstation 5
Yeah, but PS is a very limiting box. When you are used to modding and customizing yr games on pc...there is no way you want a console. Its really all about what you are expecting from gaming. This can vary quite much.

Holy shit, is this tester trusted? This should probs be in its own thread if they are. theres been some clear lies posted around here and online if the above is correct.
Not really lies. Some games performs better on Linux even under Proton. But Windows is still winner overall plus all the games that don't work or work with bugs on Proton.

If you are used to modding and customizing, you already have a better PC than this with a GPU slower than a 3060

There are lots of variation in performance from game to game and distro to distro. Generally, the only constant is the AMD cards seem on average to perform better on Linux while Nvidia ones seem to perform better on Windows.

He doesn't seem like an upstart as he has a large amount of subscribers and no one in the comment is calling into question his findings. Sounds like he benchmarks Linux on a regular basis.

Well produce a video that shows otherwise instead of "just trust me bro."

On this video:
>Plague Tale: Requiem performs better on linux in practically all fronts
>Cyberpunk2077: better on AMD Linux, no ray tracing.
>Robocop: marginally better on AMD Linux
>Banisher: Ghosts of New Eden: Better on linux, especially on the AMD card
>Spider Man 2: Generally better on Linux AMD, with much higher lows.

Like we've been saying, results are a mixed bag, with AMD cards generally performing better on linux.

Cyberpunk didnt perform better with Linux. When he upped the resolution Windows took the lead. Who the hell would want to play at 1080p with a 9070XT or 5080. He also did a 16 game average graph. You Linux guys are desperate. Just use Steam Big Picture Mode in Windows and stop with the lie that Linux is more performant.

Big pubs have wised up to regional pricing shenanigans. Indies are still cheaper on Steam but most AAA games are not, unless you use 3rd party key stores. However, you cannot refund these keys unlike games bought from Steam store.

AAAs are $80 even on Steam now? I did not know that, haven't had a gaming PC in a while. Cheaper games is (was?) always one of the main arguments people bring up in favor of PC over consoles.
Madden 26 on key stores, full price $69.99. Madden 26 sales at retailers, $29.99-$39.99.

8GB of VRAM is fine for a nice little emulation box to hook upto the big TV and that (cut down) Zen 4 CPU will be fast enough to emulate everything up to the Switch at full speed and run quite alot of PS3 games at 4K.

I wouldn't waste my time with new release Triple A stuff on it, though.

How does this compare for specs to the PS5/Xbox series X?

And I wonder what the price will be.

You kind of answered your own question...

There's no chance this thing beats those consoles in performance per dollar

Unless you specifically need a PC and not a dedicated gaming machine (that is supposed to be the point of this Steam Machine)

Cyberpunk has lower lows on windows AMD at higher resolutions, thats generally a much bigger negative than having lower highs (especially if the high isn't all that higher) as it means stutters

Now you're switching goalposts from "higher resolution" to "with ray tracing", which i clearly stated in the original post still runs better on windows

Im pointng out both ways that people with 9070XT and 5080 will expect to be able to play the game. The jig is up. Stop spreading the lies that Linux is more performant.

The obvious draw of this device is the insane game library of steam + emulation and the openness of PC streamlined for gaming and hopefully at a good price point

Your video clearly shows Linux is more performant in many cases, so i guess you're also out there spreading "lies". And we're not even entering into the merity of lower end hardware as Windows is known for eating up RAM.

The whole anti-windows/Xbox thing lately is very bizarre.
There is a huge nerd/loser contingent on the internet that is just dedicated to hating anything Microsoft and also deluding themselves that they are anti-corporate crusaders (while championing some other corporation). Most of these people are tech-retarded too, they have no idea what they're talking about.

Dude he did a 16 game average and Windows came out on top. You Linux fans are sad pushing this lie. Time to stop. You always had Steam Big Picture Mode in Windows. Use it. You gain nothing from switching to Linux besides satiating some one sided anger you have towards Windows/Microsoft.

You may not know, but this is how someone would expect to be able to play the Witcher 3 in 2025 when they spend the money on a 9070XT or 5080.

Wow...10fps difference...OMG! Just put one slider in the graphic options just one notch to the left...problem solved. 🤷‍♂️ You wont even see a difference in most cases.

The same source you're using is one of the "liars" spreading Linux is now faster than windows mate:
