Digital Foundry vs Xenoblade Chronicles X: "A Wii U Technological Master Class?"

This video might interest some of you.

https://youtu.be/5oK8UTRgvJU

I think that theres two types of players, those who prefer good graphics over good aesthetics and those who prefer it the other way around. X is a game that most definitely put the aesthetics over the graphics so i can see why some people think that it doesn't look all that good.

I don't really care about the characters, they're decent. Sure they could've been better but sorry I way prefeer THIIIIIIIIIIIIS!!!! <3

Like Digital Foundry said (something like this) : comprise must had been made but still so good.

Maaaan, that gif gets me every time.

I will happily put this game aside things like Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 when it comes to showing less game-oriented members of my family "what cool video games there are now".

I have, and oddly enough, I find the models from Xenosaga 1 more aesthetically pleasing than Xenoblade X's. Taking into consideration the era and the fact that the art and world surrounding Xenosaga 1's characters were more simplistic, the characters do not stand out as garish to me.

Everything that revolves around X's characters is so detailed and elaborate that it makes the character models look awful by comparison.
I wish someone would go back in time and tell me in 2003 that the faces in Monolith's 2015 game won't look better than Xenosaga 1's; or at least that they will somehow be a worse representation of Tanaka's great art-style.

Well, anything is better than Xenoblade's I suppose.

Please, let's not just focus on the faces. Monolith did put some effort elsewhere, so let's not forget about them ok ?

The armors look cool and detailed.

The mech look awesome as usual.

I feel like I'm the only one who thinks the character models look fine.

Lin too.

You're not alone. I'm not alone. Thank God. I'm just not seeing what's so hideous that some people can't even play or they'll get nightmares. I'm almost getting the feeling it's one of the viral impressions that everyone repeats because someone else said it.

"The Collision detection is terrible" is rapidly achieving that status too. We're only talking about one glaring instance here: the traffic in NLA passes through the characters and skells (and that's probably by design). I haven't heard of any game-breaking issues like getting stuck in the terrain.

the art direction in this is leaps better than XB and is just generally fantastic.

I think they look fine as well. I've seen worse. In Deus ex human revolution, the devs didn't even bother to make facial expressions so everyone look like they have fish eyes.

Character model discussion is tricky as I feel most of the issues stem from design more than the tech. It's kind of hit or miss for me. Some models look good while others are downright ugly - just like previous Xeno games. Though I suppose Xenosaga's models were more in line with the standards of the day at time of release.

Well...the collision detection thing applies to more than just cars. Any moving objects in the world that are non-interactive work the same way. I could get behind the idea that Skell usage necessitated this, however.

It has to be said... They are not shy at throwing a crapload of polygons around (maybe cutting some corners with dynamic shadows for foliage and other objects in the scene, but it is understandable), but people already liked that on Wii... Monolith Soft continues to do well there :).

Not a close up, but you guys can be the judge on if high resolution textures would help the faces of Xenoblade Chronicles Wii.

My hype is through the roof (and I prolly won't even get the game until at least the 8th u-u). I was always keen on playing with the pro controller, but knowing that you can turn off all the HUD options on the TV screen while keeping the interface on the gamepad sounds like an awesome way to play.

You cannot put the HUD on the GamePad. Not sure where you got this from. Unless I misunderstood what you meant.

That's right, you cannot move the HUD over to the gamepad but, during exploration, it's still possible to get by using JUST the gamepad - especially with the follow ball. During combat, though, there is always a HUD and it is required to play.

Ninjablade. I think you've got it all out of your system now and you aren't contributing anything new. Could you please stop shitting up this thread? I came in here to read and discuss the DF article and you're the centre of attention, again.

If you would stay out of the OT thread too that'd be ace.

Just ignore him. He's clearly never going away or getting banned.

He crossed the line many times already, Look what this thread turned now...
Sometimes It's hard to trust some of the decisions made here, it's like there is double standards on how moderation works here.

On a side note, maybe Zelda U will use the same engine.

Eh, I doubt that, Zelda's usually have new engines created for and only for that game (with the exception of some games on the same system ala Ocarina and Majora, Link Between Worlds and Tri-Force Heroes).
The Zelda engine for Zelda Wii U certainly seems to be a hell of a lot more dynamic than the one used in Xenoblade, with physics stuff happening all over the place, as well as (seemingly) no pop-in from what we've seen.

What we can expect, though, is that Monolith may take what they've learnt crafting Xenoblade and apply it to Zelda if they help out with it as they did with SS. Given what they've done with X, I can't wait to see what Zelda does.

Do we have footage of the physics stuff in Zelda? I'd like to see that!

From what I've seen and judging by the looks of it, Epona's mane and tail are simulated.

Yeah, High res textures are really cool on Pc with that game.
You know a part of me wanna Nintendo to give us extra freebies dlc like high texture packs or dual audio for people who wants to.

He hasn't been contributing anything new to any Xenoblade or Nintendo thread for months, so you're better off just ignoring him like instead of exposing yourself to him any further.

His agenda is so obvious it isn't even funny, I mean he once attempted to turn a WiiU thread into a discussion about why Evil Within is a masterpiece and I think that should say it all.

Don't waste your time he will continue to do this in every major Nintendo thread. It is pretty crazy what some people are allowed to get away with here. I have seen people banned for less in other threads. I'm sure the Fast Racing Neo thread is gonna go the same route mark my words.

I love love LOVE the armor, mech and creature design in this game. And the fashion option means that you're character can always look just the way you want them too without having to compromise your stats.

You travel around a huge world with monsters everywhere and it run well.
Then there was one occurence of hiccups when I went in the stone cavern in Primordia which is kinda small, some insects enemies, nothing extravagant like the outside, so I didn't understand.

Wasn't the fashion option only available after you beat the game in the Japanese version or am I misremembering what I read?

Aw man, that is a bummer. The DF video mentions being able to play the game without the HUD on the TV because the gamepad displays enough information during exploration. I know it's impossible to not have the HUD during battles, but I meant for walking around the plains and such it would work like that. I'll have to experiment once I get the game.

Some physics stuff we've seen:
  • The cloth physics all over link
  • Epona's mane and tail
  • The grass blowing in the wind
  • The grass being effected by Epona and link's feet as they walk over it
  • Grass being blown around by lasers shot by the enemy
  • Grass burning as the fire spreads realistically
  • The bridge being shattered by the monster
  • Trees and rocks being obliterated by the monster

The HUD fades out anyway except for the mini-map. You can turn off everything else manually.

Glad to hear this. I always felt that the busy hubs which MMO's are known for always took me out of the immersion. Because of this, I'm always the kind of player who always puts guns away in shooting games, so that the ammo count isn't displayed.. It has caused death many times but that still can't break the habit hahah

You can turn off all UI elements during exploration from the options menu, that's how people are capturing screenshots and things like this: https://youtu.be/CPz_64OzbWY
