My fantastic experience on PC (and yes, it is much better than on consoles, from buying games, to launching them all the way to playing them) is to a significant part due to the PC being an open platform.
That's why I have multiple distributors fighting it out with increasingly insane deals. That's why I have the choice of using any input device I want with any game. That's why I have superior external options for voice communication. That's why I can enhance the image quality of games beyond what their developers provisioned for. And that's why my games still get modded and enhanced after years by fans.
It makes perfect sense that Microsoft doesn't care about any of this of course. They'd rather I just buy games on their platform through their store, playing them using their controller while paying for their online environment and downloadable content.
