Installing as I type, reading the OP, any suggestions to someone who hasn't played a game like this?

The first fights in the game are some of the hardest because you don't really have too many options. When you get to town, I recommend you to explore it fully before going out, and listen to the guards, if they say that you're not strong enough to go out from that door, you really aren't.

Don't worry too much about min-maxing or if you spend to much money at the start, in the end you'll have more money than you can use and enough skill points to spend in what you want.

Hey guys,

this thing is on sale right now. With the regards to the patch though it's probably better to wait a few weeks I guess and buy it later? It seems like this patch changes a lot for the better an controller support is no slough also.

But then in a few weeks it won't be on sale, now will it?

This game deserves to be bought, sale or no sale, no sale preferably.

Aw, what's this about a patch? Bought this last night and wanted to start this today. Should I wait until the patch is out? Have they said anything when that would be and how much they would add/change? I usually don't have the time nor interest to play through big RPG's twice and I was looking forward to playing this today. So this comes as a bit of disappointment.

Also I wanted to start with a Knight & Wizard but it seems those are exactly the 2 classes that the first party members are as well. Am I better off picking something else?

Ugh just don't know if I should play this now anyway or wait for this patch... :(

The patch sounds interesting, but I don't think it will stop me from starting my game. Agh, decisions. From what I've heard the game is ridiculously good as is, so I don't know if it's worth the wait.

One goes Ranger.

One goes Fire mage.

Buy lots of neat arrows.

Shit go BOOM.

It's probably a wise decision, because judging from how they are talking about it, I don't think this "enhanced" version is supposed to be out anytime soon.
I don't think we are talking about weeks, as much as months.

Just to be clear, that's just my guess and I could be wrong. Hell, I would actually be glad to be wrong,

Has this mentioned patch been released? Are there notes somewhere?

Me and my mate started this awhile back and we're only able to play maybe once or twice in a week. I would not recommend this to anyone who have schedules like this since this game takes a great while to get going (if it ever does) and the quest log is downright abysmal.

I find the combat pretty boring since it seems to be pretty much about utilizing these damn barrels for oils or whatever. I like the idea of the elements, but its pretty silly. Barrels barrels everywhere!

Interestingly enough, as huge Star Wars fans we seem to be talking about how great everything in the game would be if it would be a SW game. Uber generic fantasy doesn't really do justice for the devs efforts.

No, it doesn't even have an estimate time yet. It was literally stated in the post above yours, by the way.
Also, since you don't seem to like even the best parts of the game as it is now (i.e. the outstanding combat system) I don't think a patch will solve any of your problems.
Chances are the game simply isn't something suited to your taste.

I saw something on the official forums about a beta patch for Steam being live, but not sure if that's the new one or when it's supposed to come out proper.

So I decided to just start anyway. Having a lot of fun so far! The intro kind of sucked, but I can live with that. :p

Game is looking great as well. Fog of war is a bit strange though, even weirder is being able to look through walls and into buildings from the outside depending on your camera, but it's a minor gripe. Anyway, is it possible to downsample the game without making the 2d gui/hud a blurry mess?

Also, that first town is overwhelmingly huge. It has really slowed down the pacing so far. Makes me think it's not always the best idea to throw huge towns in the player's face this early into a game.

Ended up going with Knight & Wizard after I read I can change skills/abilities freely later. First party member I found ended up some sort of archer anyway. Now I'll just have to find her a bow.

Would a combination of Battlemage and Mage make sense for chars?

EDIT:

Which place to ask technical questions? I got two problems:

- Downsampling not working. I can choose DSR resolutions but the mouse isn't mapped correctly
- Very bad: Constant stutter! I have an 970 at 980 levels, the game barely uses my card (around 45%) but still, when moving around the camera and exploring, I get random drops to 50 or 55 for a few seconds and then it goes back up to 60. It's pretty horrible and clearly not a performance but a game issue. What to do? Any setting one can change?

Possible, though I have a history with isometric RPGs. The combat seems to teeter between impossibly hard challenge and a cakewalk. I don't exactly have a problem with utilizing the surroundings, but we've player till lvl 6 and the fights seem to go the same way:

1. Stand behind the corner and pull the enemies to you
2. While hampering them with surrounding stuff

No real skirmishes where shit hits the fan and you're all tooth and nail. Either you get ridiculously pummeled, or you take the enemies one by one with the methods above.

It is entirely possible we haven't seen but a fraction of what the game has to offer, but I'm thinking that as we don't have a lot of time, games like Diablo 3 would've worked a lot better with our sessions.

You built your party and your tactics to a more defensive mindset like I have (double Hydromancers, one plate-wearing 2hander and one of those Hydros being tanky + bows for clouds of fun errwhrrr) and you'll have those pitched battles for control of the fight.

The weakness here is the low amount of instant offense on-tap, but I've had Mr. Personality (Jahan) go deeper in Aerotheurgy and Madora got a sweet new weapon recently so it's helped.

God damn, I'm barely into this game (first city) and I get completly demolished by traps and orcs. How is that supposed to be fun?

Just run around Cyseal until you hit level 3, and then leave the town through the northwest gate (the orcs are way beyond you right now) or go into the hole in the cemetery.

I went into the hole and got umiliated by some flamethrower-monster...

I got three guys.

One girl with the bow that joined me.
My Witch who has Pyromancy and Earth.
My Battlemage with Melee and Water.

Ok minor spoiler on your party:
There's another member you can recruit, make sure you get him.

Other than that there's enough quests and stuff you can do in the town to get up to level 3 or 4, would highly recommend you do that before moving out of the town. It also takes a while to get used to the array of strategies you can use in battle, there is possibly an easy way to take out whatever enemies you're getting mashed by.

Finally, this is the biggest tip I got when starting out (I don't consider this a spoiler, it's just a certain spell a certain class has):
Your mage can get a spell that summons a spider to fight alongside you for a number of turns. I called him Pet Spidey. GET THAT SPELL FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. Pet Spidey is so damn useful when you're starting out, he's does damage, he protects you, you don't need to heal him, just get it.
I can't remember exactly where you pick it up but Google will tell you. But you get it in the first town.

Actually,
there's four companions now so there's 3 other choices for him. The mage in the library, the crazy lady in the inn and the mute at the end of the tunnel that he can't get past.

Wait, what? Was this patched in or did I just completely miss them in my playthrough? I bought/played on release.

So, I think I kinda fucked up my main char. I wanted to make a battle mage who attacks with swords but also magic. So I put one point into water and one into air, everything else into melee. Am I fucked or can I still rescue him? My second main is a Witch with witchcraft, fire and earth. One point each, Pyro 2. What to do? I'm complety overwhelemd by the sheer mass of options.

So, I bought this during the Steam sale. Combat is awesome. The rest isn't. Inventory management is completely overwhelming, and there's so much dialogue that I don't remotely care about. Fuck, there's so many dialogue options now that quick exit is down to the "10", a key that literally doesn't exist.

Do these get better as the game progresses, or should I at least wait until the new patch comes in January?

A game like this that was, like, over 50% combat and gearing would be awesome, but I'm drowning in so much crap that I don't remotely care about.

There's less questing and more just....map vanquishing of enemies.. in later parts of the game. I actually didn't enjoy those sections nearly as much, but it sounds like they would be up your alley.

Hiberheim and the Shadow Forest(i think it was called that..) are lighter on quests/dialogue compared to Cyseal and that area.

Does it make sense to let him learn witchcraft anyway now? What should I do? Please halp.

This game involves a lot of reading. I think inventory management and things of that nature will be improved with the patches they are planning, but they're not likely to reduce the amount of dialogue.

These aren't really dialogue choices. You should be going through all of them to get all of the information from the npcs. The game won't lead you to quest locations, you need to read your quest log to know where you need to go.

If that isn't something that interests you then you may want to stop now.

I know that I need to talk to everybody, but each time I talk to an NPC again, those all reset, don't they? I do it once, but then they're there. Doing it once with each NPC until the journal is okay, but over and over, with random people that never have anything useful, kind of sucks. The game should be more judicious on who has options for what, instead of everybody having meaningless dialogue for everything. It has just bloated up and up for a few hours to the point where I can't even skip right past it without scrolling down.

It seems that most NPC's share similar dialogue options from what I can tell. Meaning you don't need to ask the same questions to every single NPC over and over. It would be nice though if they could remove or at least somehow mark questions/dialogue options that you've selected before. Maybe in that next patch then.

Combat is pretty rough so far. The first groups of undead outside of the first town aren't too bad, but slightly further and I'm getting overwhelmed by them. Same goes for that mini-boss slime thing protecting the door to the lighthouse who keeps reanimating everything I kill. I think I need to find some better spells I can combine to take out large groups more effectively. Not sure what else I can do.

Soooo

I just spent 2-3 hours trying to defeat the monster from in front of the lighthouse. I took so long because I was testing out how the combat works. What each element does and how to win without actually losing MY ENTIRE TEAM!!!

Man... you cant really wing it in this game or else you lose everything.

I mean certain monsters
explode and poison
you when they die.

Little things that the game doesn't tell you, like how if you light the ground on fire, it blinds your field of view. Unless I'm wrong :3

THIS GAME

I never hated and loved a video game like this before.

In those early battles, exploiting the oh-so-convenient oil barrels trivializes a bunch of the encounters. Toss a flare to blow them up, use midnight oil to expand and burn enemies outside of the initial explosion, use poison to cause an explosion, etc. Focus on stacking up 1-turn spells like flare and blitz bolt, and use rain to weaken fire element enemies.

I ended up playing two lone wolves for my restart and my mage soloed just about everything until level 7 or so.

I just started this game.

And I have to say, the whole inventory management system in this game is a complete and utter fucking mess.

I despise it with a passion.

I am assuming there are no mods for this aspect? Just my gripes.

1. Everyone has their own inventory. So bartering becomes a complete god damn hassle because you have to switch between all your characters to sell stuff.

2. If you are bartering and want to compare armors, it'll just show your armor vs the one you'll buy. Even if you switch to another character while still in the barter screen, it will still show the person that initiated the conversation items.

I wish I could mod this so that there is just one inventory shared amongst all party members, and just 1 encumbrance rating. Feels like I spend more time in the inventory screen than actually playing.

"Are you some kind of traveling butler? I will only speak to your master"

You never DON'T get used to it. The last paragraph doesn't work with what they're going for with personal-based inventory planning (but even then, trading in-battle is instantaneous over distance and doesn't cost AP unlike everything else, it's wierd).

Just got the game today. Longed for a serious RPG and this seems to hit the spot.

I'm 2 hours in and I seem to be chugging a fair bit of health potions due to neither of my two characters having any healing spells. I was wondering if it's too expensive/bothersome to rely on potions in the long run?

You will get lots of money in the end. Steal paintings and so on. You can hire two more party members in town. One is in the library, one is at the inn and there are two more companions that have been added. I do not know their location because they were patched in at a later date.

Alrighty. I'll carry on then :)

Btw, is resurrection a bit of a problem from time to time? I ended up in a dungeon where one of my characters died and I then fled from battle. I wanted to go back to ressurect. But as soon as I get near, I get engaged in the battle I can't win. No opportunity to ressurect it seems...

Is saving the game constantly the only option to avoid situations like this?

I'm a bit of a savescummer. I usually save before a fight. If it goes well, I continue, if not, I reload. This was for the early game. When your characters are a little more beefy, you will have more chances to resurrect your allies during combat.

Anyhow, it just seems sort of fundamentally broken that I'm not able to resurrect my character.

Oh, there are resurrection scrolls and spells. I think Arhu sells one spell and it can be found in a few other places. Resurrection scrolls can be bought from various vendors or people. (You can barter with every person in the game.

Have you tried sneaking? In combat, I think resurrection scrolls cost 10AP. Try sneaking to get close to the body and use a scroll. If not, try to head back to town and grab two companions. I assume you have been to Cyseal? You can recruit companions as soon as you enter.

Yep, I started off by sneaking, but that didn't help me much. The place
a dungeon from the graveyard in Cyseal, where I dug up the entrace.
Weird thing is that both my characters are level two and they seem to get completely owned by this flame-throwing demon.

You might be in the wrong place. What level are the enemies and I still recommend recruiting two more companions if you're not taking the Lone Wolf Trait.

The enemies are also level 2, but it was completely by accident that I ended up there. I was supposed to find a dude named Aurelius (I think) but I got side tracked ^^

Big update today. 1GB Patch

It’s time for the first update of 2015!

In addition to a number of bug fixes (thank you for all your feedback!), we’ve gone through all of the encounters in the game and made a ton of balancing changes that we think will make combat even more fun. We’ve also activated the Steam Cloud saves, and we have good news! PC & Mac savegames are compatible. For the modders out there, we can finally release the exporters that will allow you to import your own models and animations into the game.

Here’s the list of the most important changes and a few important remarks about Cloud saving:

Cloud system:
When you enable cloud for Divinity: Original Sin, you will see your cloud quota in the save/load screens. Only new savegames will be uploaded to the cloud as they have a new, compressed format. So if you need your latest saves on the cloud, you will have to load them and resave. You will then see a cloud icon next to them. Hover over the different statuses in the save/load screen to see what will be added and removed from the cloud. You can remove saves manually from the cloud by deleting them via the in-game menu. Furthermore, the game will remove older saves from the cloud automatically when you have run into the max amount of cloud save data. Keep in mind that if you use the Steam Cloud for Original Sin, you will be uploading data on a regular basis if you make a lot of saves. Upload speeds will depend on your Internet connection.

FAQ for Cloud:
Do the cloud saves work cross-platform (Mac <-> PC)?
* Yes, you can sync from PC to Mac and Mac to PC.
What happens to my old saves?
* They remain locally on your current PC. Only new savegames made in patch 1.0.250.0 and beyond will be uploaded to the cloud.
What happens when my quota is full?
* Your newest saves are uploaded to the cloud and oldest saves are removed from the cloud. This does not mean you lose your saves. They are just removed from the cloud, but stay locally on your PC.
What do the icons mean in the save/load screens?
* "Cloud with arrow" means the save will be uploaded to the cloud upon exiting the game. "Cloud with x" means the save will be removed from the cloud upon exiting the game. A normal cloud means the save is correctly in sync.
How do I turn on/off Steam Cloud?
* You can do this by clicking through the following steps: Library > right click on game > Properties > Updates > Steam Cloud > Check or uncheck the checkbox at the bottom.
Note: since the game is DRM-free, it can be started manually from the game folder while steam cloud is syncing. Do NOT do this, as it can possibly corrupt your steam cached cloud files. You will not lose any saves, but the cloud will be confused as to what is in sync and what is not. Please only start the game via steam, if steam is running.

Bug Fixes:
Gameplay Blocked when talking to Leandra while escaping from Death Knights
Bairdotr party size issue fixed. You were no longer able to recruit a 4th party member. Loading your savegame should allow you to re-hire a 4th companion immediately.
Fixed Homestead room-opening issue if you spoke to Zixzax with a companion first, while other player characters were arriving. If you had this issue pre-patch, you can try loading your save and returning to the Homestead.
Fixed Zandalor being interruptible when you first meet him. This could cause story progression issues.
Evelyn NPC blocked and remains in clinic before and after going through the lair scene
Equipment usable in skill bar
"Send to Homestead" appears in context menu if you start new game after loading save
Change Tenebrium weapon damage calculation: Tenebrium ability is now a requirement and you get the damage boost from your weapon ability
Kickstarter pet black spider should now be the black spider model instead of fleshy spider
Ingame time incorrect after loading a save and then starting a new game
Due to cloud being enabled, the way the player profiles are shown in the game has changed. All existing profiles are scanned and available, instead of only the profiles linked to your steam account.
Fixed issue that could get your character stuck in skill preview mode after spamming skill keys when leaving a dialog

Mac specific changes:
VideoCardBlackList expanded with all the reported models for Yosemite (Lockup on first screen on old hardware)
OpenGL specific fixes for flickering objects
OpenGL performance improvements
Effects library updated with camera effect
Smoother zoom and scroll
Books rendering issues with OpenGL
Mouse right click in fake full screen was not working

Balancing changes:
Cyseal
Chimaera (script improved)
Dietmar (bugfix: enemies won't turn invisible again on save/load)
Lighthouse Horror (bugfix: scripting error)

Black Cove
Crab Summoner (now summons more, hits harder, can teleport back to the player if too far away)

Luculla Forest
Blue Mushrooms (bugfix: summons will not be of a different faction anymore)
Void Shepherd (bugfix: killing the shepherd now ends the fight)
Drunk Goblins (bugfix: goblins were not ending turn when drinking from flower)
Rafflesia (bugfix: now summons level 14 flowers)
Shadow Summoner (now stronger & faster)
Spider Queen (bugfix: now summons level 14 spiders)
Kromkromkris (bugfix: doesn't get attacked by his own summons anymore)

Hiberheim
Boreas (bugfix: made non-teleportable & doesn't move when it's not his turn anymore)

Dark Forest
Anguish Demon (removed one summon, making the fight a bit easier)
Fire Demon (summons void dogs faster)
Kalgruuda Cloudpiercer (doesn't end turn after summoning and summons don't skip their first turn anymore)
Braogg Spiritchaser (doesn't end turn after summoning anymore)
Tunnel Mushroom (made non-teleportable)

Stats changes
Rebalanced Constitution & Damage: from Luculla to Dark Forest, overall, creatures go down faster but deal more damage
Toned down Armor: some Armor scores were too high, resulting in unnecessarily long fight
Rebalanced Initiative: some creatures had too high an Init, others too little. NPC Init scores will now be closer to players' score
Rebalanced Willpower & Bodybuilding throughout the game
Rebalanced physical & magical resistances
Some creatures had high dexterity and were difficult to hit
Pure elementals (fire, water, air, earth) now have proper resistances and immunities
Magic weapons changed (example: a flaming sword would inflict pure fire damage. Now, it inflicts physical (slashing) damage + a fire boost)

Editor Update:
We have supplied a 3DSMax exporter to allow you to import custom animations and models into your mods
