DmC Review Thread (Release Date - 1/15/13) Embargo is over!

6 bosses?

you mean we already seen half of 'em >_>

To be fair, we did see all of DMC4's bosses in the trailers.

The odds are stacked against you then.

No mention of it in the guide or in the achievements. No PR announcement on it. Just a vague hint on an interview which never excluded the possibility of it being DLC.

The absence of evidence doesn't equal the evidence of absence.

cliche, i know.

We have actually "seen" 4 bosses. The Mundus spawn was shown in one of the recent videos as the boss of Mission #14 (after the club sequence). I guess technically we already know how the Vergil fight operates based on his game play so the only real surprise in the game is how Mundus looks as a boss.

Kinda looks like Nero actually.

Anyone else think this is shaping up to be a pretty short game even by DMC standards? Easier game to start with, 20 missions, several of which are simply boss fights, no Bloody Palace.

I can't see how this is longer than 6 hours.

Metacritic is a just measurement of whether a game reviewed well. That's it. I am not suprised at all that DmC is reviewing well but the content of these reviews inform nothing about my purchase because they are not talking about the factors I care about as a DMC fan.

The point is that a game that is absolute garbage is not gonna have a high Metacritic score. Since many people suggested that DmC is absolute garbage, then I just said if this is the case, I do expect it to be refecleted by a low Metascore.

Yeah, well that's like one of my most favorite games of this generation.

The guy providing the in-game costume skins said it was 15 hours on Hard/Nephilim, although who knows what the hell that means, millage may vary, Bayonetta can be beat in 3 hours, etc, etc other talking points

Yeah, well that's like one of my favorite games.
Notice that is on the PS3... which is an unplayable version of the game. Unplayable games should not be getting more than a 1 score by reviews.

What are these DMC standards exactly? There's so many variables to consider.
Capcom themselves mentioned that it would be like a DMC game and be around 10 hours to complete first time by an average player. I would say that is a close approximation of how long it takes on average to beat a DMC game for the first time (DMC2 not included of course). DMC1 was the shortest of the 3.

It took me 24 hours exactly to beat the original DMC3 (NA balls hard version). But again... I died numerous times and had to replay many sections over again. After getting the SE I finished it close to 10 hours and am able to complete it in under 5 hours on the harder difficulties. DMC1 first time ever I beat it around 10 hours but 2nd time I beat it in less than 6 hours. I can easily beat that game under 3 hours now. DMC4 is around DMC3 length as well, I would say around 10 hours as well first time around.

Bayonetta, Devil May Cry 3 and 4 are 10-12 hour games on the first playthrough on normal mode. Obviously all of them can be beaten much faster.

I have a hard time buying this game is 15 hours given what we've seen so far.

The jury is out until we see playthrough of a whole level by a competent player but no, I don't think will be a long game by my any stretch of the imagination.

the fact that a reviewer managed to complete nephliim, son of Sparda and Dante must die in time for a review is a huge warning sign on that front.

10 - 12 hours on DMC 4?

That's a pretty big stretch.

I don't get it. Don't people who play this type of game want it to be deep and complex. How can reviewers say that it's not deep, and still give it 9/10?

Haha. Not at all. Alice ;)

And white hair looks like York/Morgan from Deadly Premonition

You watch Luther. You're alright, man.

yeah, i know that -- but one thing that people do with these games is go through the game at their own pace on the first time through. Replaying stages, fighting bosses over and over. Stuff like that. That wasn't an option in DMC1, like you mentioned (one mission in that game could be finished in 10secs). I mean it took me 10ish hours to finish DMC4, and that game didn't have nearly the amount of content as DMC3 (12-15 hours first time, iirc).

So I have hard time trying to get a definitive answer on DMC length. Though I'm sure people in this game will try to power through it as fast as possible.

Some reviewers have said that it's deep while others says there is a lot to the combat even if it doesn't touch the depth of previous games.

Mileage varies of course but I think 10 hour mark for a DMC game is considered "average" for a first time playthrough, deaths and cutscenes included.

There was a GAF project that detailed how long it took various GAF members to complete various games. Someone can find that and see what the average hour mark for DMC3/DMC4 was.

http://howlongtobeat.com/gamelist.php?sort=name&sortd=asc&gamename=devil+may+cry+4&platform=

DMC1 - 7 hours
DMC3 - 11 hours 48 minutes
DMC4 - 11 hours 02 minutes

Mundus's final form has been hinted in the "face your demons trailer"

What are these DMC standards exactly? There's so many variables to consider.
My standard for a character action game are fast, precise, and deep mechanics, an abundance of style, and an engaging difficulty level that punishes mistakes but not unfairly, to encourage and reward mastery of those mechanics. That's similar to how I judge fighting games.

My standards for a brawler are just fairness and spectacle. I'll be judging DmC on that scale so it may actually come out looking pretty good. But I don't attach as much value to that type of game so I'll be waiting out for a price drop.

And the game's difficulty has to be factored into length too

and who knows how many secret missions they found, or secret pieces of Devil Orbs to extend your meters or how many retries you do to get a better rank now that'll your familiar with the stage and it's fresh in your head or *insert a million variables here*

There are 21 secret missions plus every mission now requires keys to open so that's an extra time sink right here if you want to do that stuff before completing.

So once again, to clear 3 difficulties going by capcoms pr takes between 45 to 33 hours.

I'm not buying that a reviewer, based on the tone of the gamesmaster review invested that much time in the game.

Not sure what you mean by content in this sense. Devil May Cry 3, 4 and DmC all have 20 missions. DMC3 is the hardest of those games so it's longer with all the deaths, restarts and orb farming a lot of us did the first time around.

Shit just got real. Ending spoilers leaking any minute now.

Guy said story is nothing special and straightforward. That pretty much confirms that the /v/ rumors were fucking bull shit.

THANK GOD FOR NO T-REX VERGIL!!!

Well that was obvious.

where is this info may I ask? It may be better to pm the link so others who are buying the game don't get tempted.

That guy who linked the guide spoilers. Just read a few pages ahead, the end game spoilers start coming on the 4th page.

I didn't notice that, I played it on Xbox360, which scored higher. Yes, the game on Ps3 was very buggy, but even the Xbox360 version had many bugs that had to be fixed with a patch.

Bayonetta didn't have a survival mode either...

But DMC4 Bloody Palace was so cool with the backgrounds.

EDIT: Or no wait yeah it did.

It just keeps getting better and better with this turd!

Btw, Bayonetta had the Lost Chapters which was its own version of BP. It was fucking awesome too!
