DNC Chair DWS tells @tamronhall that the allegation is the Sanders staffer accessed Clinton voter-file info, exported it, and downloaded it

.

From NGP VAN

We immediately began an audit to determine if any users had intentionally or unintentionally gained access to data they normally would not have access to within the limited timeframe when the bug was live. Our team removed access to the affected data, and determined that only one campaign took actions that could possibly have led to it retaining data to which it should not have had access.

We are honored to work with the DNC, the Clinton campaign, and the Sanders campaign. At the request of the DNC on Thursday, Sanders campaign access was suspended pending the campaign reporting on its access of the data; NGP VAN played no role in making that decision, and contractually could not. Again, this bug was a brief isolated issue, and we are not aware of any previous reports of such data being inappropriately available. We look forward to supporting all our Democratic clients, and in particular apologize to the DNC, Clinton and Sanders campaigns for our bug Wednesday. We will continue to work with and report to the DNC regarding this issue to ensure that this isolated incident does not recur. We have and will do better.

According to data obtained by TIME, the Sanders campaign appears to have obtained files with lists of unique voters that the Clinton campaign had cultivated in ten early states including Iowa and New Hampshire.

The compromised data reflects major financial investments by the Clinton campaign, and if the Sanders campaign did download and retain Clinton’s campaign data, it would mitigate some of the advantage she may have gained in voter outreach and listbuilding.

yeah, this is not looking good.

Sad to hear.

To me Bernie is kinda uninteresting. It's the amount of wordpread and grassroot power I find interesting.

As a socialdemocrat I found Hillary to be too much right-sided.

I would rather have Hillary as potus than a republican, but Hillary is pretty bad too imo.
Hillary really only leans right when it comes to foreign policy. She's liberal in every other aspect. I'm not exactly sure what her stance is on Wall Street regulation besides maintaining Dodd-Frank, which is being slowly torn down. I just know she's against reinstating Glass-Stegal and breaking up the banks.

Holy Shit.

Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign exploited a temporary glitch in the Democratic National Committee's voter database to save lists created by Hillary Clinton’s campaign, according to an audit of the breach obtained by Bloomberg.

Sanders’s campaign has sought to downplay the severity of the incident, initially saying that only a single “low-level” staffer accessed the Clinton data and that none of it was saved. But the audit of the database's logs created by the vendor that manages the data, NGP VAN, show that four accounts associated with the Sanders team took advantage of the Wednesday morning breach. Staffers conducted searches that would be especially advantageous to the campaign, including lists of its likeliest supporters in 10 early voting states, including Iowa and New Hampshire.

The DNC, which maintains a master file of voter information with NGP VAN, has responded by suspending the Sanders campaign's access to the system until the campaign can fully explain the breach. Campaigns rent access from the party, and update the files with their own data culled from field work and other investments.

After one Sanders account gained access to the Clinton data, the audits show, that user began sharing permissions with other Sanders users. The staffers who secured access to the Clinton data included national data director Josh Uretsky, who was fired on Thursday, and his deputy, Russell Drapkin. The two other usernames that viewed Clinton information were “talani" and "csmith_bernie."

Though the Sanders campaign initially claimed that it had not saved Clinton data, the logs show that the Vermont senator’s team created at least 24 lists during the 40-minute breach, which started at 10:40 a.m., and saved those list to their personal folders.

Will the Obama Administration be bringing criminal charges against Sanders?

I don't think you can have something super-illegal happen and not bring federal charges.

I mean, unless it's Hillary's Wall Street Cronies doing it.

It's not crime tho

This is why i hate cloud providers that think that data segregation is too much bullshit and just wanna throw everything in one table with a simple columnar segregation.

That would explain why it was reported by the vendor and not the staffers themselves. Really sucks because a few assholes aren't representative of the whole. Fucking idiots.

Is it too late for Al Gore to run ?

We could use him for the environment anyways. People are going to freak out over this in the worst way. This is a disaster.

why? DNC wanting Clinton is as obvious as the RNC NOT wanting Trump.

Because nobody at the DNC has any reason to believe Bernie has a chance in hell to beat Clinton, so there's literally no rational reason to cheat to make sure he doesn't beat her. It's a conspiracy theory.

Jesus Christ...

If I vote for Sanders now, I would be a hypocrite because I would be voting for someone that did something similar to another candidate who I would never vote for (Clinton email thing).

Fuck... I am gonna have to rethink my strategy, but this sort of stuff just pisses me off.

It's not Bernie that did it. It's his staff.

I understand political campaigns aren't always staffed by like, senior experienced people but seriously anyone who was given data access should have been told up front "hey by the way, every access you make will be logged"

I really don't think you can hold Bernie and his entire campaign responsible for the actions of a few individuals.

I am not a Bernie supporter, but this could be anything. It could be select * from early_voters where state="nh". And then save that to a csv. We don't know how the tables are arranged or if anyone even looked at the query output. Then again, it could be like that asshole we canned a few months ago that sent around links to porn that wasn't filtered by websense saying "hey, look what i found!"

They'll probably come out with some doctored audio tapes of Bernie ordering his staff to hack into the most valuable database known to man during the trial.

So the sanders campaign was illegally stealing data and then lied about it when caught. Pretty scummy Bernie

I absolutely wouldn't blame Bernie directly here, but he certainly has some bad apples in his campaign, it appears. I hope they've taken all of that illicitly-obtained data and tossed it - it's unethical to own it, and even more so to potentially use it. Also, this isn't 'campaign-ending', like I've seen a few people suggest - it was (very) bad behavior, but as long as they toss the data and fire the people involved (they're doing the latter, at least), then we can move on.

That said, I'm amazed by how (some) Bernie supporters are trying to downplay this. For example, Daily Kos (a very pro-Bernie site) has 8 or 9 contributor blog posts in its 'recommended' section, nearly all of which are justifications for - or dismissals of - this behavior, made by some of their more extreme Bernie apologists. I imagine (and rightly so) that these people would be livid if the tables were turned.

The problem that can arise from scandals like this is that it taints the candidate no matter what. You can say either Sanders knew, which is bad, or he had a lapse in judgement with having this staffer be on his campaign or allowed a bad environment to fester among his staff, which is bad, but not as bad as the first option. Compare it to Bridge-gate with Christie. People either said he knew, and that makes him a dirty politician, or he suffered a lapse in judgement in hiring his staff or allowed an environment of corruption to fester.

Conference is starting.

This is something. The Clinton email was nothing. You're still joke status

Yeah, unless we hear that Bernie knew about it, I think people are overreacting just in the same way they say people overreact about those damn emails.

That said, it is looking bad and in no way is favorable for his campaign.

Sounds like they're trying to push all the blame on the vendor and the DNC. Oh boy...

No, they really aren't the same. At all, in any way. If the current allegations are true, then Sander's campaign did something illegal and clearly wrong for purely political purposes to try and undermine the democratic process.

I.e. Absolutely nothing like the emails. Unless the fact they both happened on computers counts for a similarity.

Between this crime and Hillary's e-mail and Benghazi crimes, this might throw the election to Trump in a 1972 style landslide. No wonder the DNC is spinning like mad trying to contain this to just Bernie.

More than likely it was voter modelling information that will instruct the campaign on who to contact, how many times, and the messaging that is most appropriate. The VAN doesn't have just voter data. It has micro-data associated with it that's behind just voter frequency. The VAN can pretty much tell you who to target, when, and their likelihood of voting for you by political issue. I imagine the lists pulled pretty much laid out Clinton's entire grass roots campaign strategy.

This isn't the behavior of a winning campaign. Sanders' people know they're losing and were desperate enough to commit a crime. This is the behavior of a thug, or worse yet a Gamergate supporter. Digitally assaulting women is no laughing matter.

Yeah this is not a great look for this press conference.

It's surprisingly aggressive considering what we know at this point. I sorta expected something more apologetic. But hey, it's all strategy. I would have just put it on the staffers' head, like what Trump does for his more outrageous tweets or retweets.

If the Bloomberg reports are true then this is the dumbest thing they could do.

They must be very, very confident the reports in Bloomberg / TIME are incorrect then. Because if not, his campaign would be over. Stealing another campaigns data might be fine for your hardcore base, but it will absolutely end any chance of winning.

Considering his hostile feelings towards black people it's not surprising though.
