Do we expect Splatoon to be the next major Nintendo I.P.?

The whole Amiibo centric aspect of the game, has turned me off of even buying it.
Hardly anything in the game is affected by Amiibo support. They only unlock some remixed single player levels and I think a few additional 8-Bit mini games to play while you're waiting in the lobby in between multiplayer games.

It's selling incredibly well in Japan. It's not going to bomb and it sure as hell isn't going to sell like The Wonderful 101 did.
I'm not biggest fan of the game, but I hate seeing games that aren't shovelware sell poorly so I hope it does well. That being said, it selling well in Japan doesn't necessarily mean it will sell well everywhere else. And before someone uses anecdotal evidence of it selling out in stores, let's not pretend Nintendo doesn't undership it's products.

Edit: I'm curious to see where it charts on the May NPD since it only had a few days to sell in May. Unless Nintendo touts it's success, we probably won't have an idea of how well it sold in the US market until the June NPD. Speaking of NPD, is there one for Canada?

Let's say it ends up selling 200k in Japan and 200k everywhere else. For a Wii U game, that would actually be pretty decent. Definitely not a bomb.

I'm guessing at least 1 million worldwide when all is said and done.

Nintendo doesn't under ship software too often, it's all the rest of their stuff that has the problem.

The vast majority of people online I see are from japan, (usually like 6 out of the 8 players) so I imagine other regions aren't selling as well.

Really? I tend to see one or two Japanese players in most matches. Sometimes more but the majority of players I've battled with and against weren't from Japan.

I guess it depends on when you play. I usually play late at night when it would be daytime/noon in japan so that might be it

Some of the posts in the "wall of shame" are just stuff saying they don't think it will hit 1 million worldwide.
At the moment we have zero official sales numbers, and it is hardly outside the realm of possibility that it sells sub 1 million. It could be a hit in Japan and lukewarm elsewhere, or it could sell a million first month for all we know.
Just don't count your chickens before they hatch.

Good point actually. I played late last night/early this morning and there were definitely more Japanese players. I played this afternoon and only saw a few.

Unless I missed some, I read exactly two comments saying this. The vast majority said it would be a sales failure.

I'd say at least half of the people I play against are Japanese players, which seems very odd because I've usually played online midday EST, which would mean it would be like 1-4AM JST.

There's so much denial here in order to hold onto the tattered remains of a negative sales projection.

Splatoon isn't some niche game in a genre that doesn't sell well in the West, so generally speaking, if it sells well there, yeah, you can reasonably expect it to sell well everywhere else.

Also, games are provided to retailers based on what the retailer's corporate purchasing team dictates they are willing to stock for sale within a given period, no more and no less. So if it's out of stock, it's because those retailers did not anticipate a high demand, pure and simple. These aren't amiibo we're talking about, Nintendo has plenty of them to send to retailers.

All that said, we'll likely know by Tuesday just who's right and who's wrong, but literally everything points to it being a sales success. The only remotely debatable point is whether or not it has the potential to be an evergreen seller.

Sure. Then there are others as well that say things along the lines of 'I hope I'm wrong but I'm just not sure it will do well'. Why would a post like that belong on the wall of shame? Only posts that belong on there IMO are people certain it would fail or sell W101 numbers.
And even then, we should wait till we have concrete numbers. We have no idea how it will perform world wide.

wait what, like the squid jump?

I only have the inkling girl btw.

Yep. The Squid unlocks Squid Beatz. The other two games are Squid Ball and Squid Racer. I'm not sure which one the Inkling Girl unlocks.

I actually don't think a wall of shame makes any sense until we know sales numbers and I agree that it should be reserved for those who said it would be a huge bomb.

Y'all need to look at a lot of the dates on that "wall of shame". A good amount of them are from before any marketing, the Direct, the events, or the Testfire.

So? It's one thing to say "I don't think it'll be a huge success" and another to say "lol this is going to be the next The Wonderful 101"...even before the marketing kicked in, we've had a year of glowing impressions at multiple trade shows and other events.

Good games don't always sell.

Word of mouth at press events don't really hold sway in sales.

But they usually can help a game sell more copies than The Wonderful 101...

People kneejerk'd big time on this title's chances due to Wii U's performance...it's that simple.

I didn't care for it at all like two weeks ago. At this point after the gaf hype I'm close to buying a WiiU + Splatoon pack >_>

Not even Mario managed that this gen.

Nope. It sold 67% of its initial shipment during its first week.

in japan. i was talking about the U.S. and the quotes around "completely sold out" were meant to imply that everyone was reporting it sold out, not implying that actually happened. The actual sales were less than 100k. So it was call for some rationality in this th--hahah who am i kidding

No one ever claimed Bayo 2 was selling out in North America, aside from maybe a handful of people providing anecdotal evidence. I saw the game at four stores the weekend it released.

For the record, I have absolutely no idea how well this game is selling in NA and EU. I would assume it's doing decently.

For the first time ever, I want to buy a damn Amiibo. I assume the Splatoon ones are impossible to find?

For the first time ever, I bought myself a damn Amiibo...well, Amiibos (or is it still Amiibo when plural?). I managed to snag the last Splatoon tri-pack from my mall's Gamestop during release date (since I also work in the same mall). I came during my break, and the clerk was on the phone with someone else asking for it too...

You can't have silly defensivism without silly offensivism and vice versa.
Touché. I'm just going to no longer partake in the sales discussion until we know the proper sales figures. Last thing I need is another overly defensive fanboy claim that I want to the game to fail.

And for the record, I wasn't referring to you, just in case that's how it came across. :p

yet you're apparently ready to fight against any slight warning that maybe it's not time for a wall of shame just yet. The reverse wall of shame may be real.

Nah, it's all good but all silly.

Personally I find the sales threads the most boring.

The only reason sales matter to me is that a certain IP or console will sell enough to not go away.

I hope the game sells well enough to be a brand new franchise but beyond that, don't care.

The only thing that I laugh at is the The Wonderful 101 stuff.

That's not a free opinion, it's a lack of common sense.

I could probably sell more copies of a shitty game I made than that really good game sold.

Except the vast majority of people in that thread were able to obtain a copy with no issues. As I said above, anecdotal evidence from a handful that had trouble tracking the game down. I don't even know what you're trying to argue here. I've even stated that a "wall of shame" is pretty useless until sales are out. You seem pretty angry about all of this.

Eh? Am I... missing something? Because Orbital clearly said:
