Do you like the name "NX" or do you think Nintendo should change it?

IF NX is going to be the 9th gen Nintendo console then I think is kinda cool, like Ultra 64 and Revolution was. (sad for Wii U, it should've been called Super Wii but whatever)

Truthfully it's have a nice ring to it and get's the point across that's it's a new console. It's a code name though so it's almost guaranteed to be changed sadly.

Really hope they're not crazy enough to use the Wii or U naming again. >_>

Without bothering to Google sourced info...

The codename for the DS was the DS.
In development it stood for "Developer System" (or something like that), but they liked the sound of it and changed the meaning to "Dual Screen" for the official naming.

Code name for the DS was Nitro though.

I'm pretty sure they'll change it, it's a codename. Like others mentioned the X read as 'cross' kind of implies that whole unified OS system they seem to be working on.
Also I think the letter 'X' is too strongly attached to the Xbox brand at this point, even if they don't really use the letter itself too much (like using it in game titles and such).

I'm all for NX...

  • Even though "X" is a kind of cliche, it still sounds cool
  • It's short and snappy
  • It sounds more "core," which is the audience they should focus on
  • The X could stand for crossover, which would be a clever fit for a console/handheld
  • Maybe they could work up some logic where this is the 10th system, in which X could stand for "10"
  • It's a clean separation from the Wii brand
HOWEVER...
"X" is kinda Xbox-y. That alone might kill it.

I think it's a good name.

Revolution was WAY better than Wii, but they changed it.

Dolphin was also an amazing name. Gamecube has a simplistic charm to it, though.

Actually, they should just call it Dolphin.

Pretty sure it's not gonna be a "nintendo".

They switched handheld and console brands with the Wii and DS. Wii is the new Gameboy, and DS is the new Nintendo.

Unless something surprising happens, we're gonna have a new "Nintendo" handheld, and a brand new console brand.

That's not correct. The codename for DS when it was in development and had a direction was Nitro. When it was just an abstract concept of "what's coming after the GBA," it was called Iris. From an Iwata Asks on WarioWare: D.I.Y.:

Code name for the DS was Nitro though.
No, you guys are right. Scratch that. That's what I get for rushing my posts. (Multi-tasking GAF with life)

I'm sure there was something about the 'Developer System'/Dual Screen name switching (but making no difference as it was still DS), but maybe that was a marketing thing between unveiling and release.

They always change the name. I always thought (at least at the time) that Dolphin and Revolution sounded cool.

Katana was the coolest

If they are going down the hybrid console/handheld route, I like the name Nintendo X - pronounced Nintendo Cross. Selling that name in Japan wouldn't be an issue, as they kinda see X as Cross anyway - but I think Western markets would be a much harder sell though.

I had a crazy daydream a while ago, around this - that NX (Nintendo Cross), was a reference to Nintendo X Apple or Nintendo X SEGA or some other collaboration.

Nintendo should go with a futuristic name - something "grown up" would be good.
NX sounds like a bland internal code name so it would be stupid if they stuck with it.

I much prefer NX than Wii / WiiU! lol

If they wanted to keep NX, I would be okay with it. If not, at least I hope they come up with a proper name.

Nintendo is just gonna look at apples success and steal all their strategies including naming and multiple platforms sharing an OS. Get ready for "n" slapped in front of everything.

nHome
nGo
nConsole
nPortable
nMobile
nPad
nWii

I think there's a higher chance that NX is better than the final name than the other way around. See Revolution - Wii. NX isn't bad.

They really should use "nintendo" more clearly. I love the idea of "nintendo Nx" or "Nintendo NeXt" or something like that.

Im not to found of the resent naming, I felt that wii u should have been called "super wii" and now I think that they should skip the wii branding althogheter :/

I think you guys are forgetting the dual ecosystem.

They aren't naming one device or system. They are most likely going to be naming the handheld which acts as a console controller, and the console, in step with each other, creating a sense of symbiosis.

They will most likely be announced together, and sold together, but must be able to be clearly referred to individually.

So they need a pair of names that somehow link up, but can be broken apart clearly.

They will most likely eschew the use of the word Nintendo as that can be a limiting factor. It needs to sound mature and classic but also fresh and innately Nintendoish. The "ii" spelling could be a good way to sound like Nintendo and also link up with amiibo and miitomo.

For example, ignoring the ridiculousness:
Palm (handheld)
Trii (console)

Palm-Trii

They will announce the system as one because the goal is for people to buy both, and presumably one to feel incomplete without the other. So it needs a system name that works the best when together as a whole, but not too much so!

I'm indifferent to it right now.

Could change when they reveal the console, controller, etc. basically when we can put a face to the name.

NX sounds so good to me. It's definitely more of an aggressive name than their last consoles. When I first heard the name I felt like it had more of a "core" gaming sound to it.The name gives me the same feel as an N64 or Game Cube.

Please no. Don't let bastardized Japanese English become a thing anywhere but Japan.

Well they're going to change it regardless. And they honestly should, MS kinda has the whole X thing locked down on consoles, you'd end up with even worse brand confusion than with the Wii U and 3DS.

Kimishima thought from the very beginning that WiiU is too similiar to Wii(not just the name). If I would be convinced something is too similiar, I wouldn't give the followup product the same name.

Nintedno NX doesn't really make me think of Xbox at all honestly. But hey, maybe the should play it safe.

Honestly, Wii 2 would have been the easy choice. I'm sure they could have come up with something that's both original AND works, unlike Wii U, but barring that, Wii 2 would have been fine. At least it's clear that it's a continuation of the Wii brand.

But the problem with Wii U was also the fact that the Wii U was everything BUT a continuation of the Wii brand. Sure, it's white and you can use the wiimote and it had a couple throwaway titles in the "Wii ____" line, but nothing about it was about expanding the gaming audience. Also, no amount of good naming can salvage a commercial trainwreck :p.

And at least with Wii 2 people would have better understand that it's the new system in the Wii brand not thinking that it may be an expansion or something like that.
Even if Gamepad push in all early commercials almost without showing the system (which again is very similar looking as the Wii) was a bad idea.

It seems that they did everything wrong possible with the Wii U brand... sad since the system deserved more attention and better sales imo.

I don't have a problem with it. It's just a code name and will be changed.

Whatever they do call the NX then I bet it'll be a lot better than "Wii U". Pretty much anything is better than that.

It kind of breaks my heart when I remember the last Nintendo code name was Project Cafe, and how recent that was.....

there's gotta be a better name than nx, mostly because it's not 'en-ecks', and also because there's already a console out there where 'x' is a big part of its branding.

They won't stick to NX, that's a given. I do really like that name though. It sounds hi-tech, is simple and easy to remember, and doesn't really sound too similar to any of the current competing products.

As long as the name Wii is nowhere near the final product.

I think Nintendo should tap into some nostalgia. Super Nintendo (Something).
