Do you think Halo 5 will live up to expectations?

The only part of the game might not live up to expectations is the campaign, because it's very hard to get a story that will please everybody, and the co-op design backbone will rub some the wrong way.

I've heard nothing but positive impressions regarding the multiplayer though. The beta was fun, and they seem to have fixed all the complaints people had with it. It seems like the hardcore fans are pleased with Arena, and the more casual game reviewers have been impressed by Warzone. The REQ system sounds like a solid and addictive gameplay loop.

Sales and attach rates will be high since this game was undoubtedly the reason many bought an XB1 in the first place. There has not been a poorly selling Halo installment to date, and I doubt this will buck the trend. Player base will take a dip in November, but I think it will bounce back when Forge and free DLC maps release. COD will of course snatch lots of players up, but I don't think Battlefront has legs, and certainly won't have a competitive scene to maintain long term interest. Fallout 4 will take me out of it for a month probably, but I'll be back.

Overall I'm optimistic that it will meet expectations. I feel like we've seen enough of the actual game to make it a known quantity, which is in stark contrast to Halo 4

All signs are pointing to the game being great, and the beta was really fun.

But some people have unrealistic expectations and are chomping at the bit to scrutinize the smallest details, so it's not going to please everyone.

after both betas battlefront feels like the more interesting one?

battlefront beta firmly planted me in the 'wait for ea access' camp

Agreed...not to mention the no single player campaign and $50 expansion. It turned me off. Halo 5 is providing the full deal here.

After extensive time with the beta and seeing everything they have planned for multiplayer and Forge, yes, I think it will live up to the hype.

Not to mention there is very little advantage to using boost dash when you get killed almost instantly.

After playing the beta I truly believe that this is going to be the next big multiplayer game. The changes and new abilities actually make a ton of sense in the context of the game and are both useful and fun to use. The skill based ranking system combined with the big esports push and clan system is going to make this one of the best competitive shooters since counterstrike. It's halo for a new generation of gamers and for people that are sick of the twitch based, low TTK CoD titles and want to play something that actually requires a bit of skill well still containing fast paced adrenaline pumping gameplay from CoD.

Honestly in this day and age of games with a myriad of power ups, specials, and kill streaks 343i has gone against the grain and stripped all of that away and focus on making a well balanced tightly designed PvP game and it's incredibly refreshing and I can't think of another company that is doing that.

Not sure if it was just me but for some odd reason BLOPS3 felt a little clunky this year. I have no idea what it was but something just made your character feel heavy. I cant put my finger on it. The wall run felt a little off and that honestly is Titanfalls fault because it felt so damn good. The new movement in Halo 5 just feels right. I can finally make those ledges that id miss if i didnt jump properly.

Battlefront wont have legs to last. It was lots of fun being in the Star Wars universe. Games like it have come before and they are great. I am just getting Titanfall vibes from the game. It will be fun for a week or 2 and then I will loose interest.

I am wondering what Halo 5 will do for esports in terms of shooters. I know CoD and CSGO dominate the scene. The thing I just cant play CoD competitively in a serious way. Too much randomness. I mean I am playing BLOPS3 and all of a sudden these exploding orbs are moving around the map and im like "WTF where did these things come from? What loadout is this?" Typically when i watch a starcraft 2 game the pros can assess a situation by just knowing what the other player is doing and can react in a decent amount of time. I fell like Halo 5 has this with power weapons spawn timers and callouts. There are no air strikes or drone, supply drops. Its pretty straight forward and you get what the map gives you and play to your advantage.

Sorry long rant about Cod.

No.

The world is a vastly different place to what it was when the first and second Halo launched, like it or not.

People are more negative about EVERYTHING. They'll play a game that gives them 12 hours of absolutely stellar gameplay and then bitch and whine about that one time where an enemy glitched and his legs weren't shown on screen for three seconds.

I don't see why people are so hyped for Halo 5 honestly. Sure it looks amazing but is still lacking in areas that Halo 4 shares such as campaign design and audio design. It is a huge "wait-and-see" for me.

the only place I ever see that kind of outrageous, unreasonable negativity is here on GAF. I think most people will enjoy Halo 5. Plus the beta was amazing and I doubt the full game will be worse than the beta.

As long as they can do tie ins with hunt the truth story with cameos w/ ben and fero. I'm happy.

i also wanna see midnight facility and the cult.

How so? The campaign design has increased the scale of every encounter by adding more verticality and optional routes. They've also brought back the huge scale fights that Halo 3 had and we haven't even see how the Guardian fights will work yet. Audio design is top notch with the sounds of the weapons, added covenant and team chatter, melee and movement sounds, and soundtrack.

There's still grand expectations for a Halo game? I thought that time had long passed. It's not even the same developer anymore. Plus that genre was milked to hell and back last gen and seems to be cooling down now.

It could always be solid and sell real well, but Halo's never gonna change the game again like it did on Xbox.
The Halo titles not only live in nostalgia but they were made by a different developer, so any shortcoming is immediately attributed to "these aren't the same developers the game would be better if it was still Bungie" by probably a sizable amount of the fanbase. And as we have seen recently Bungie isn't infallible.

That's not to say it won't sell like hot cakes.
yeah

Why do people "worry" about population? Seems like the most concern troll thing ever. You can boot up Titanfall on XB1 right now and get in a game in seconds full teams. Do people think that COD and Battlefront are going to come out and the millions that bought this game are going to abandon it?....and please don't waste time posting that stupid Halo 4 population drop off graph. Even with that stupid graph you can still get into a Halo 4 match in seconds.

Well.. I don't know about PEOPLE..

But I worry about population because I do not live in the United States. Because of that, population for titles is usually smaller (unless it's FIFA).

Using your Titanfall example. If I hop online right now, there probably will be around 300 people playing in my local Azure cluster, and the only game mode that finds matches is Attrition. If I want to play something different, I'm fucked.

Now, Halo 5 uses the same Microsoft Azure dedicated servers as Titanfall. This means that the lag free experience is awesome, but IF you have to play out of your region, your disadvantage is bigger than ever, since now not only you're playing with a 150ms, but your opponents are playing with a 15ms ping. Good luck trying to out-BR someone (it was a nightmare in the Beta).

So.. Population IS very important. I'm not "concern trolling" as you suggested. I'm talking from real experience with Halo's current position in the market and the strength of the competition, I think it's VERY fair to worry about it.

Population isn't just about whether or not I can find a team deathmatch game in titanfall. It's about maintaining a healthy competitive community and fanbase. Competitive games with high populations always have something going on with them, whether you want to compete yourselves or just watch (dota 2, csgo, halo 2 and halo 3). Titanfall, like halo 4, just isnt a good enough game to sustain a competitive community which is reflected in the population graph.

I have high hopes for Halo 5's multiplayer in terms of how much fun it is to play. I'm not sold on whether they have the ability to foster the growth of a long term competitive community - but they're taking steps by running the HCS.

Single player - I'll be honest, I don't think that 343 has a good understanding of where to take the story long term. I hope to be surprised on the 27th though.

after having a small taste of the 3 big FPS games coming out this holiday I can say that Halo will easily be the one I spend the most time with. Honestly I do not see a FPS coming out anytime soon that will top Halo 5 for competitive console fps.

Here's what I think is gonna happen. In fact, I'll put money on it.

I know I'm gonna love it. Plenty of people on GAF will love it. It'll be hailed as one of the funniest shooters.

Then...then the nostalgia naysers will arrive and raise their voices and pitchforks because "it doesn't feel like Halo". Stupid nitpicky complaints will come up because plain and simple, some of those guys just aren't as good at Halo anymore like they used to be...so they'll result to blaming the game.

Then the obvious will happen. New games like Battlefront, CoD, Rainbow Six will all come out all during the next month and many fans who already planned to buy those games will move on from Halo 5....just like they intended. Then those good ol' nostalgic naysers will use that as ammunition as to why the game sucks and why majority of the fans don't like it either to make them feel better about themselves, all while pretending that we're still stuck in the 2004-2007 era of Xbox Live gaming where competition for multiplayer FPS games were nearly nonexistent compared to now. Basically delusional haters who are going in with a negative attitude.

Am I right or am I right?

I still haven't forgotten about the disappointing train wreck that was the Halo: MCC, in fact I'm still not sure whether it's been totally fixed after all this time. Even if it is, the community died pretty quickly as soon as they realized there was no one was coming to the rescue any time soon.

I will not be pre-ordering Halo 5, nor purchasing it on day one.

Sure I'll watch the streams, sure I'll read the reviews, but I'll be damned if I'm ever putting my faith in 3v4 industries and Microsoft again any time soon.

I never preorder games but had to for Halo 5. Haven't been this excited for an FPS shooter in a long long time. Hopefully it'll be a smooth launch.

Once things settle down a bit 343 needs to get their shit together and fix MCC once and for all. Still tons of bugs and issues.

Nah. People are always looking through those nostalgia goggles, wanting to relieve the glory days. They've changed as well as the gaming landscape.

Not to say it won't be a great game.

What the fuck?

It was just two systems back: 360, Xbox, thats it.

What the hell is there to be nostalgic over?

Where do you people get this shit?

People disliked that the final boss in halo 4 was a fucking cutscene, because making the final boss a lameass qte cutscene is lame ass design, not because they were nostalgic.

I hope so. I'm only mildly worried abt the sameness of all the environments I've seen in the footage I've watched thus far outside the canyon-y area.

But, it's sitting on the hard drive of my LE console, can't back out now.

I'm sure it'll sell well and review well like Halo 4, but its longevity is questionable. I can't speak for the majority, but I have low expectations for this game so I'm giving 343i the benefit of the doubt that it'll be good.

"We're Still Not Bungie! And Now You Hate Those Guys!"

Did Bungie ditch destiny to come back to Halo?

Not sure if serious.jpg

Bungie is still very much working on Destiny. Destiny is their own IP.

When they cut ties with Microsoft, they lost the rights to Halo from that point. Micrsoft put together a studio names 343 industries. 343 was made up of some former Bungie employees who wanted to continue to work on their legacy.

Halo 4, and now 5 was made by 343i.

Bungie hasn't touched Halo since about 3 months after Halo:Reach launched.

I think so. But partially because expectations have been lowered after Halo 4 and MCC. Halo just ain't what it used to be imo.

I'm expecting a decent campaign that looks really nice, so hopefully it delivers in that regard.

Stinkles. I know you're reading this. Admit it. You are proper nervous.

Don't worry. It'll be fine. *hugs* #support #hashtag #falafel

Two systems has been 14 years. People have grown up, gone to college, gotten jobs, started families. There's plenty to be nostalgic for.

Some people are nostalgic for that feeling of wonder from the campaign and universe. Some people are nostalgic for their first online experience. Some people are nostalgic for the feeling of sitting around with some pals playing splitscreen. Some people are nostalgic for the simplicity of their lives when they could play Halo from sunrise to sunset.

I've seen the hype for Reach, 4, and now 5. I don't see it going any different.

Expectations seem more measured this time around and Halo 5 looks like the shit. So I'm pretty sure it will.

Am I right or am I right?

No, you're not right, because you've got this incredibly dismissive and kind of asinine understanding as to why people genuinely didn't enjoy Halo 4. "oh you're bad at the game so thats why you hate it lolol" Yeah, that's some shit I haven't heard since middle school. fuck that noise

It will if people don't expect it to be as good as 2 and 3. Halo isn't what it used to be. I had to get over this fact to be excited about it.

No, I doubt it. Halo 4's campaign and multiplayer maps were the worst we've seen. I understand that that 343 has addressed the problems with the prometheans, giving visual cues when their shields are down and they never were as bad as the flood but the game never lived up to the highs I felt when playing any of the other halo campaigns.

I also think people have been getting burned out on the shooter Renaissance of the early and mid 2000' and are moving on.

But to your point, hardcore gamers despise Bungie now. Might this be seen as a boon for 343i?

"We're Still Not Bungie! And Now You Hate Those Guys!"

A lot of the people who made Halo great left after Bungie decided to stop making Halo games.

Also EA hugely screwed the production of Destiny by enforcing that it have mass appeal. Hence the huge U-turn on the story which was entirely stripped out.

Nah. Halo 4 was trash and Halo: MCC was a joke. I expect nothing good from Halo anymore. I don't think it has a good team behind it, and I don't expect a good game to come from a bad team.

Ten million, so you expect an attach rate of around 50%?.

Yes. Halo 3 had over 50% as well on the 360. Halo 5 should easily reach 8-10 million LT, and maybe even reach past 12 million, who knows? Either way, I think it'll drop considerably less than Halo 4 did, especially since it has far more content then BO3 and SW: BF, and because it seems 343 has finally made a good multiplayer for Halo.

Multiplayer? Yes absolutely. They're doing everything right with the core game and ranking system. The only way I can see people getting disappointed over the multiplayer is if they're only in it for BTB and Infection.

Campaign is a different story. Halo 4 wasn't disliked out of nostalgia, it was disliked because of closed levels, QTEs, bullet sponge enemies that can insta kill you, a horrible final encounter, and just an overall too short and unsatisfying experience. It's a bit harder for 343 to nail the campaign because not only do they have to fix 4's flaws, they have to create their own unique and meaningful experiences that are in line with the rest of the series.

343 is promising big encounters in 5 and it has already been confirmed that there won't be QTEs. We'll see in less than a week. Hopefully reviews will accurately showcase the game.

I really enjoyed the beta. Hoping 343 turned it around. Their track record has been horrendous, in my eyes.

Wouldn't have bought it day one but I have an old order from Amazon for $40 so I'll go for it.

As for closed levels, its been the case since Halo 2. The levels shown in Halo 5 are massive, and have a huge amount of virticality, meaning you can actually use stragegy. But either way, they won't be massively open like the ones from Halo CE.

Top Bottom
