Do you think there will ever be a point where Sony will give access to all the libraries from PS1 - PSVita?

Impossible to do so, but you will have at some point every first-party PS1, PS2 and PSP game that's not behind licensing hell (sports stuff for starters or, sadly, Gran Turismo) or requires old peripherals.

If they can continue building their classic gaming library without resetting each generation than a good chunk of PS1 to PS3 games should be available to play (and hopefully not locked behind a shitty sub). But all of them? No. It's not possible.

Get a Steam Deck, emulation is golden up to PS3. And theres massive github megsthread with the whole playstation catalogue. Why would SONY do that when they can play on the nostalgia and sell you a handful of old titles for $20+?

Im playing Gran Turismo 3 and Burnout 3, Silent Hill 3, THPS3, Tekken 5 etc widescreen support, 60fps 1440P. I dont need SONY:

A lot of people feel backwards compatibility should be built in and that Sony is disrespecting PlayStations past.
There are a lot of gems out there from the previous gens and honestly if it wasn’t for emulation I probably wouldn’t be gaming as much as I do. But I’m one of those people that’s in the minority that loves playing older games.

For me personally I like a gaming laptop better than a steam deck since it’s a bigger screen, I can play with gamepads and it does PS3 emulation very well. Plus I can play modern games at better performance than a deck.
For handheld gaming I have a switch for that.

Then why you asking for SONY to make you pay for all those all over again?

The only way is if they build an emulator that's like really good, and then enable disc BC. This isn't going to happen on PS5, and is unlikely to happen in the future.

While being lacking in some areas some of the deep cuts they've dropped so far on PS5 have been impressive. But they need to balance the niche with the normie.

I think it actually had unique hardware in it to run everything. This is why only early PS3 models could do that.
That’s not true because all PS3 consoles can play original PlayStation games straight from the disc, including the last super slim, it was software emulation.

The PS3 was a multigenerational multimedia unicorn of a device, but everyone in this hobby is financially illiterate/broke boy and can't afford 599$ so we're stuck with shit hardware til this day. Anyway, most old games have not aged well, play them on your phone using an emulator and you'll see why the general public doesn't care for old games.

Nope, they will just re-release the game at full price rather than come up with a way that lets us play our ps3/psp/vita purchases. I have 0 issues pirating games i paid for, but i shouldn't have to.

Ever?

In a revelation that has stunned the entertainment and gaming industries, last night’s Game Awards took an unexpected and history-altering turn. What began as an ordinary celebration of the year’s best in gaming ended with an unprecedented announcement: Sony Entertainment, one of the world’s most iconic technology and entertainment conglomerates, is now under the ownership of extraterrestrial beings.

The reveal came in the final moments of the show, when host and producer Geoff Keighley—who has long been the face of the Game Awards—took the stage for what was expected to be a closing speech. Instead, Keighley, with an eerie calmness, peeled back the facade that had defined him for years. “I’ve waited a long time to share this with all of you,” he began. “I am not who you think I am. In fact, none of us are.”

He then proceeded to reveal that he is, in fact, an alien from a distant star system. For over a decade, Keighley has operated as a liaison between a mysterious extraterrestrial collective and Earth’s entertainment industry, carefully orchestrating a secretive takeover of Sony Entertainment.

Behind him, screens flickered to life, showing cryptic symbols and indecipherable texts. The message was clear: Sony had been acquired by this alien faction, and Keighley, their ambassador, would now serve as CEO. The transition, he claimed, had been in motion for years, hidden in plain sight. “Every innovation, every leap forward in technology you’ve seen from Sony—it has been a product of our superior understanding of the universe.”

The audience, a mixture of celebrities, developers, and fans, sat in stunned silence as Keighley continued his revelations. The first announcement was met with wild applause: full backward compatibility across all PlayStation systems. Players could now seamlessly play any game from the PS1 to the upcoming PS6, a feature long requested by the community and previously thought impossible due to technological limitations. But the true bombshell came next.

Keighley revealed a new, previously unannounced PlayStation console—one that was not only 11 times faster than the PS5 Pro but also compact enough to fit inside a smartphone. “This is not just the next step for gaming,” he said with an unsettling grin. “It is the next step for humanity.”

Dubbed the “PlayStation Infinity,” the new console boasts processing speeds that would render even the most demanding games and applications nearly instantaneous. Advanced neural interfaces, designed with alien technology, would allow players to immerse themselves in worlds with unprecedented realism. More striking was the claim that this device would be capable of expanding beyond gaming—acting as a portal to communicate directly with the alien race that now owned the company.

As the show ended, it became clear that this was more than just a corporate takeover. The future of entertainment, and perhaps humanity itself, was being rewritten in real-time. Social media erupted with a mixture of disbelief, excitement, and conspiracy theories. Analysts are already speculating about what this alien ownership means for the industry at large. How will other corporations respond? And what does this say about the future relationship between humans and extraterrestrial life?

As the audience slowly filed out, one question lingered: What is next for Sony—and, indeed, for the world—now that it is in alien hands?

Geoff Keighley, or whoever he truly is, left the stage with one final cryptic message: “This is only the beginning.”

But PS3 used software emulation for the original PlayStation and could play anything.
Consoles playing unrecognized game software apps by the home screen will just never, ever happen again.
If Sony does enable disc BC, you would just be able to play games that are also available on PS Store.

The only thing is PS1 games look like trash on PS3 and it’s a much better experience on duckstation.
They only look bad if you're using a CRT. I recently played through Ape Escape on a small 720p tv and it looked perfectly fine.

if they had the whole libraries on a PS5 console that came with a subscription that was decently priced I would most defintely.
You would never get that amount of content for whatever "decent" price you have in your head right now. Without including PS4 that would be around 14,000 titles. The licensing alone would put it in the $100s per month.

Which sucks that Sony didn’t just put emulation for backwards compatibility in the first place. Only way your getting those older titles now if there is demand for it or a remaster since now Sony is monetizing everything.

I still have my PS3 fat backwards compatibility with cfw. I mean I love it but it would be nice if Sony would allow these libraries for the minimalist without the need of having your living room looking like a trader Joes of older consoles.

Been thinking of modding the vita. Anybody that wants this should just play it via emulation.

I bought Mega Man Legends 1 and 2 on PSN, all the Final Fantasy games, a bunch of well known Squaresoft titles. These companies want to go the Nintendo route with you for your licenses. Capcom can’t even give you RE or Dino Crisis without it being behind a paywall sub service.

I’ve got Digital Devil Saga, Devil Summoner, Capcom vs SNK 2, and a bunch of stuff on PS3. It’s a hit and miss if I get to download those to my PS5. I got Wild Arms 2 and Legend of Dragoon since I bought them already. Would I get Alundra or Vagrant Story again? I don’t honestly know. PSN PS1 Classics ranged from $5.99 to $9.99. Suikoden II’s PSN release being a highlight of that time to me.

Freedom Wars is getting a remaster, Final Fantasy has had its Remastered versions, so I don’t honestly know. CvSNK2 is coming out with the Fighting Collection 2 next year. Front Mission 3 is getting remade. If anything, Sony and the developers are re-releasing those games.

Do think this will ever be possible with future consoles? Or will PC emulation be the only way to access the full libraries?
I mean the closest we've got to that was PSVita TV. Where it actually all worked for PS1/PSP/Vita libraries.
Will they ever do it again? Doesn't seem like they care much for the approach 🤷‍♂️

I guess the better question is if we'll have a FPGA PS2 before we get Sony to do this again ;P

1440p on the Deck? ;P
But actually the particular selection of games is still annoyingly - not great on PCSX2 - BO and SH3 are a compatibility mess, GT3 was having random glitches last time I tried it too, but maybe that's finally fixed. Though more importantly there's the issues with input latency on PCSX2 that - impair the experience somewhat even when compatibility is great.

But PS3 used software emulation for the original PlayStation and could play anything.
Licensing lawyers don't care what emulator 'can' do. See that Vita example above - the machine was compatible with all PS1/PSP games on PSN - but was restricted from downloading or playing some of them due to licensing. One time a glitch in PSN removed said restriction so all of the library worked - for a spell. Ie. there were never compatibility issues - but Sony just wasn't allowed to it, legally.

If you play those games in software mode they work like a charm on PCSX2. Say what you want but PS2 still has the goat catalogue of games out of all the PlayStations. It’s a shame that you only get to play sprinkles on the PS5.

I just want the list of ps1 games I bought on psp that were playable on ps3, psp, and vita but some how they weren't on ps4, but a select handful are on ps5. What the hell.

Where is my (games that I bought on ps3/psp that are not on ps5):
Blood Omen
Mega Man legends 1-2 and Tron Bonne
Parasite Eve 1-2
FF 7-9 (well i have them on switch now so don't care)
FF Tactics
Arc the lad 1-2
tomb raider 1-4 (well I have remakes so good there)
Legacy of Kain
Suikoden 1-3
Castlevania SOTN
Silent Hill
Resident evil 1-3
Pandamonium 1-2
MGS1
Medieval
Crash trilogy
Spryro
Sly Cooper (ps2)
Star Ocean 3 (ps2)
Persona 1
Persona 2 ET and Innocent sin
Vagrant Story

What we got on PS5:
Grandia
Legend of Dragoon
Syphon filter
Twister metal 2
Dark Cloud (ps2)
Wild Arms 1-3
Jet Moto
Rogue Galaxy
Jak and Daxter

Shit give us more ps1 games that weren't released:
Brave Fencer musahi
Legend of Legia
Azure Dreams
Torneko the last hope
DQ7
Bushido blade 1-2
Gran Turismo 1-2
Road Rash 3d / Jailbreak
Wild9
Vandel Hearts 1 and 2

I know I am forgetting a bunch.
Also more digital psp games.

Its downright sad what sony has become. Nintendo is more true to its roots with releaseing classics. The thing is they have them as they trickled some out and stopped, why?

I'd be happy with being able to use my PS5 play the digital PS1 games I already bought for PS3 and Vita. Granted some of them did become playable when they were made available for sale alongside the classics catalog on PS Plus, but it would be nice to play all of them. I still have my PS3 and Vita so it's not like I can't play them at all, but I wouldn't mind the convenience of using the console I have connected.
