Do you want to see a return to World War 2?

So yeah, this idea was spurred by my other thread about Battlefield, and it got me thinking.

Everyone had WWII fatigue about a console generation ago, and with the introduction of COD4 (won't say that COD started it, but it was probably a big factor), the modern era was the new hotness. Call of Duty 4, MW2, Black Ops (to a degree), MW3, and the Battlefield series with BF2, BC1, BC2, BF3.

Medal of Honor even took a crack at it and seems to be the new direction for the series and I won't even mention countless other FPS that are set in the modern era.

3 major FPS franchises ditched WWII and didn't look back (with the minor exception of BF 1943).

Besides some few exceptions, (Red orchestra, BiA), WWII was pretty much dead. I for one was happy. A whole new era to play in with new guns, mechanics, etc.

But I realized, I'm not really that excited anymore. MW3, ignoring that it kinda looks like the same thing, does not excite me. BF3 looks great, but I am officially tired of this era. Modern era is the new WWII for me.

I want to go back. I want to go back to planes that you can drop bombs from that required skill. I want to go to dog-fighting that doesn't consist of locking onto targets with missiles. I want old style guns like the Thompson, the BAR, the Enfield, that didn't have high-powered scopes, or grenade launchers. I want a game where it's not possible for me to call in a UAV or an Airstrike or a nuclear bomb. I want to go back to a slower style type of game that WWII brought with it.

Does anyone else want to see a return to WWII? Maybe Battlefield 4? What about the game after MW3? Or are you guys still happy in this era?

Peloponnesian War is tragically overlooked in gaming. I'd like to see an FPS for that era. The S stands for "stabber."

I feel like I already know it back and front from all different angles from all the WW2 games I played.

I'd be more into WW1 games. Not too familiar with that war.

For sure, I always thought that MAG for the ps3 would have been better if it was set in the sword and board era. 256 player sieges on the PS3 in a teamwork oriented game? Yes please.

Honestly, no. I feel like the overload in film and gaming over the last decade still hasn't properly withdrawn yet. I mean, I feel remarkably insensitive saying it, but yeah. Enough.

Doesn't matter. A good game will always be a good game no matter where it's set. Hell, my body is incredibly ready for Red Orchestra 2.

Sadly, the future (and winter) is probably coming.

I'd be interested if we had more games like Wolfenstien and The Saboteur. Both great games set in WWII, but did something completely different with it. The setting is great, but I think I've seen all I need to of the different campaigns.

I would like to make an fps about the second consolese war aka the African world war aka the bloodiest conflict since world war 2. Make it brutally realistic and bring forth the issue of world hunger and child soldiers.

I'm always interested in a WWII theme every few years sure. Maybe once a generation then just add DLC to the same game.

They should also do what others have said and go back even further with medievil war times.

I'm not so sure endlessly running across a field, dying in no man's land and respawning in trenches would make for very entertaining combat.

I don't think firing at the enemy in his trench while standing in your own trench sounds like much fun.
It does if you add these:

I would like to see Omaha Beach in modern HD. Hell, EA or Activison should just make a WWII Greatest Hits game. No story, just giant set pieces.

I feel like WW1 would only work on a massive scale. Even then, who would want to play the trench soldiers? Everyone would want to be on the ships or in the planes. I just don't think it would work from a gameplay perspective in the end.

I would rather have a bunch of different FPSs in different timezones, rather than having all of them jump to one timezone, then once everyone gets bored of that, jump to the next.

Resistance(to an extent) Alternate Past
Battlefeild- Modern
MAG- Modern(slightly futuristic)
Killzone- Future

Next generation will probably be Futuristic Warfare fraze. Ironically, we're already have fatigue of the modern era in only 4 years, and it took 7 years for us to get off WWII

But what if games set in the GMT +7 timezone are superior?

*ahem*
Anyways, enough of being a smartass. Trends are always going to be something we have to deal with unfortunately. I LOVE WW2 because IMHO it has the right balance of technology to make gameplay very fun and interesting. There's nothing I love more than using single shot bolt action rifles in FPS games. I always gravitate towards them.

Ohh, my bad.

Searched World War but didn't get anything that was like my topic. Didn't think to put WWII.
Use it to your advantage. Two threads on gaf in a month that talk about a return to WW2. All signs point to yes!

replace trench with cover and you have the modern TPS

Well, the campaigns were a lot better in the World War 2 games, so I sure wouldn't mind.

Maybe I should think about Red Orchestra?

This game exists and it's called Mount & Blade: Warband. But it's PC only.

I'd play another WWII game if it was set up with BF3 level graphics/destruction/vehicle based battles.

That was pretty much the game I was thinking of when creating this topic. BF3 graphics/engine but in WWII era.

Yea, I LOVE that game and have put countless hours into it... I don't know how I forgot about it. oops

To be honest, I would love something very medieval, not in terms of Skyrim, but actual Game of Thrones-type "Choose your house" and just do all sorts of awesome things around the 7 Kingdoms. Deal?

I'm surprised there haven't been more alternative history games.

It's a fairly popular subgenre of science fiction. But seems mostly missing from games.

Like say, maybe the Chinese colonized the West Coast of N. America. And the Romans the East Coast. And in between are the Mound people (or Aztecs or Anasazi or whatever). Fast forward 1500 years later, give all sides machine guns, and boom, it almost writes itself.

I'd rather have more alternate history fps games rather than stuff based on actual history. Or hell, give me WWII with modern or futuristic weapons. Why? Just because.

Call me crazy, but I'm still not ready to go back to WWII era. We all know that there's a ton of material that WWII games could cover, but we're going to still see the same thing each time.

Screw that. I want FPS's to go back... to the future! I'm sick to death of the whole 'Gotta keep it 'realistic' for the dudebros, who 'can't relate' to science fiction or fantasy and thinks that they're 'stupid' because they have the imagination of your average turnip' trend in game design lately. :p
