I would remove Popular and The Comeback and replace them with Doctor Who and Stargate.

Yep, so would I. A good list otherwise.

I think it's good to highlight some shows that are actually CULT shows (short life, small but insanely devoted following, largely ignored by the mainstreeam). Party Down, Undeclared, Farscape, Better Off Ted, Popular, The Comeback, Pushing Daisies, Community, etc are all far better described as "cult" than about half of the stuff in their rankings.

It seems to me that a lot of their list is just sci-fi/genre stuff that actually became a pop culture sensation. How is LOST even remotely a cult show? Or Star Trek? Or The X-Files? I would also question the inclusion of stuff like The Wire, Fringe, Twin Peaks, Battlestar Galactica.....all of which had pretty massive critical success, and varied commercial success.

I think "cult" refers to the devoted community that obsesses over the details of each episode-the ones listed here certainly fit that bill...I never thought of The Wire as a cult show-but it certainly is one!

I think "cult" has to imply that a film or TV show was on the fringes of the mainstream.....that it was largely unnoticed critically and commercially, but loved by an adoring few.

Just having an obsessive following cannot make you "cult". Otherwise Star Wars is suddenly a cult movie.....Sex & The City is a cult TV show....

Better Off Ted, Arrested Development, Pushing Daisies, Twin Peaks yeah, those are all definitly cult shows. Supernatural is pushing it, as is the X-Files. But LOST? Really?

Star Trek is too popular to be called a cult show I think.

I am a huge fan of both shows, actively in fandom and everything, and I still say that Firefly fans are way more fanatic and culty than Buffy fans. Firefly might not have as many cut throat shipping wars, but I've had cops not write me tickets cause they noticed my Serenity rear-view mirror dangley, heh.

Also, Doctor Who should have been on that list somewhere, in the top five if not number one.

Click the link I posted from 2009. It is a much better list. And Who is at #1.

Watching Wheels on Meals, a Jackie Chan film from 1984, for the first time in years. I never noticed that Benny "the Jet" Urquidez was rocking The Doctor look 25 years before it was cool. He was too busy kicking Jackie Chan's ass to make a big deal of it.

Once it has been on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, I don't think a show can really be called "cult" anymore (barring certain special circumstances). I approve of Doctor Who's exclusion from the list, but simultaneously disapprove of the inclusion of shows like Lost, X-Files, Star Trek, etc.

I would have considered Doctor Who to be "cult" back when the only way to see episodes was on some weird Saturday afternoon broadcast on PBS. That's exactly what I imagine when I hear "cult". Something awesome that for any myriad of reasons isn't given the exposure it needs to click with the mainstream (or something simply to quirky to be appreciated by the mainstream).

The weird thing about Doctor Who though, is that I would have expected it to take off when it was on the SyFy channel. Strangely though, it didn't catapult into the mainstream until it was on BBC America (a much more obscure channel, as far as I can tell).

But BBC America pulls the pedigree of being called BBC. That name alone carries more clout with the American public than SciFi or Syfy ever would.

The BBC name holds clout with some people -- but those people think of the BBC as a source for news, historical drama, mystery shows, documentaries, and the occasional off-the-wall sitcom. I wouldn't expect a campy sci-fi show like Doctor Who to resonate with a mostly intellectual audience. I like the show a lot, but it isn't exactly Downton Abbey. It's entirely possible that the show was building momentum on SyFy, and that audience simply made the switch to a different channel. Or that there's something more appealing to Americans about Matt Smith than there was David Tennant.

So remember a few weeks back when I talked about how I was catching up and was kind of bent out of shape about Tennant leaving and adjusting to Smith? I'm caught up now.

Smith is far and away my favorite Doctor of the modern era.

Tennant was amazing, but Smith is just so weird in the best way. He's not quite so consumed with being a savior and maintaining the "lonely wanderer" persona like Tennant was. He is motivated almost entirely by his curiosity and his love for the wonder of the universe and plays it off brilliantly.

Also his companions are leagues above the others, I think. I thought Rory was going to be Mickey 2.0 but I was so wrong.

The leap from series 4 to 5 (and even 5 to 6) is just incredible. It's like the show finally became what it wanted to be since 2005.

And now I'm sad that I'm caught up and can't marathon through this stuff anymore.

Totally agree. Tennant and his era are good, but Smith is great.

Jealous of the Glory that is Johnny Depp
in this modern Doctor Who no companion has been outright killed, if Amy is killed that would be kind of huge.

I wouldn't be surprised to see just that happen for exactly this reason. Daleks have been less menacing lately. That needs to end.

The Dalek episode is the first of the next series. I don't see this happening, at least in that episode, considering we've seen Amy in trailers for the next few episodes.

Very cool teaser image.
But I thought the episode where amy leaves involved the
Weeping Angels
, whatever happens, I hope it is dramatic and it would indeed be awesome if they just out right killed a companion.
