Doctor Who Series 8 |OT| We've fucking time-travelled, yes?

I didn't watch any of the last series (no particular reason why, just... didn't).

I like Capaldi, but he did spend a lot of the first half of the episode mumbling. He improved! Kind of hard to warm to the character when he's all over the place mentally; was it like this when Colin Baker tried to murder his companion?

I have no knowledge of Clara whatsoever, but she seems okay.

Mostly I'm just happy to see Michelle Gomez on screen at the end, particularly if she's the Big Bad. I love Michelle Gomez :)

I'll put this quote in spoilers from the episode; made me laugh anyway :-

"Need a big long scarf...no need to move on from that, looked stupid anyway"

Or something like that anyway!

I'd love to read some candid accounts of the production of that episode, because it certainly gave me the impression that all was not well behind the scenes.

At least half of that episode was utter trash (the first 30 minutes especially). It was almost like I was watching a completely different show (and not in a pleasant, fresh-start kind of way). The cinematography was horrible, the writing was horrible, Capaldi was bland and had no presence whatsoever, Ben Wheatley's direction was unrecognisable...

By the end of the episode however there had been a number of scenes where everything and everyone seemed to be firing on all cylinders, so thankfully I've come out feeling I've seen just enough to keep me interested in what is yet to come.

It was a terrifying ride to get to that point though.

Feel like he's talking to a certain section of the audience here rather than Clara.

Yeah, that was particularly on the nose, and kind of robbed that scene of its impact. It would have worked best as a passing reference I feel.

I really liked that, felt like wiping the slate clean and starting again. Which was needed really because of how bombastic the show had got.

The atmosphere was great, and Capaldi is perfect.

Maybe the dishevelled feel to the opening half hour was supposed to be representative of the doctors state of mind? Then as he regained composure so to did the episodes quality?

I really enjoyed that episode. The thing that struck me most was how good the pacing was. Normally, Moffat episodes seem tremendously rushed, with excellent ideas but not enough time to fit them all in. This actually resolved everything nicely, particularly with regards to the villain. The other thing that struck me as being rather good was the dialogue. For the most part, I think Moffat is a better writer than Davies but Davies can do better dialogue and make people seem a bit more like, well, people. However, in this episode Clara came off as mostly normal, Capaldi Doctor actually had some really good lines, and I genuinely appreciated all the characters. Definitely bodes well for the series ahead.

I enjoyed it but found it to be rather uneventful and anticlimactic. Closer to a Christmas invasion than the awesomeness that was Eleventh Hour.

Capaldi reasoning with the tramp was great as were the callbacks to Girl in the Fireplace. I do feel like there's going to be done emphasis on the Pompeii connection too. At first I thought that the final scene was in Pompeii.

See, narratively I'd buy that if the production quality itself hadn't also suffered. There's no chance in hell that would have been intentional.

I just don't get how you could come away thinking that, and I'm bloody envious to be honest that you did. For me, you could have started that episode with the mirror scene in the alley (which was almost exactly 30 minutes in - I looked at the time and everything), and the episode would have lost absolutely nothing of any value. It probably doesn't help that I'm not much of a fan of that detective trio, but I remember liking them at some points in the past at least.

Doctor Who finally gets round to the "Death personified as a lady" trope! I'm genuinely excited, because it's one of my favourites.

At least, that's what I assume Michelle Gomez's character is meant to be (regardless of her actual title). Wonder how they'll play it, though; we know the Doctor ain't a religious man, he denied Satan when he was stood right in front of him...

Seems like an interesting series arc, anyway. Hopefully it's its own thing, and not too closely linked to the mystery of who gave Clara the Doctor's number and all that.

I want the tumblr gif of Capaldi looking metal as fuck with a glass whiskey saying "I have a terrible feeling I'm going to have to kill you"

Loved it. First third or so felt a bit all over the place (perhaps intentionally) but damn that restaurant scene was golden.

I love the slow, steady pace. Really is in stark contrast to 10 or 11 jumping around the room spouting nonsense words.

Also it feels like Clara regenerated too. Her scene with Vastra was awesome.

Really enjoyed it second time round. So good.

Doctor Who Extra is guff, mind. Nee worth it.

Yeah, just watched. In case you didn't realise Peter Capaldi is the new Doctor! Who knew!

Well she was the first person who jumped to mind but then I thought
She called him boyfriend rather than husband so I assume it can't be her
They are travelling in different directions. She could be at a stage were they aren't married.

Not much to say that I already haven't said but that was great the second time around.

At least I can comment on the music now, I don't think Gold's music has been that toned down (in a good way) in ages.

Well I thought that Capaldi was grand, though certainly the first chunk or so seemed disjointed.
I mean really… it could have skipped all of the dinosaur nonsense completely. Perhaps they just really wanted something for the cgi artists to do other than reconstruct Victorian London for the umpteenth time, or perhaps for the reasonable novelty of 'Oh a big dinosaur'.

But the latter parts seemed to save it; there was some lovely dialogue exchanges and stuff.

I think it has to do with the "Dinosaurs on a spaceship" episode. They replaced parts of the ship with human parts and they waited for the brain of that woman. Should be the same species right?

Wait no, I mixed something up. They weren't dinosaurs on that spaceship xD

Really unlikely, I'd guess. Her casting was announced with a name for the finale.
So who is it then? :P

Didn't realize it was running at the same time in Germany as in the UK, I thought we'd be a few hours behind or so.
Well, anyway, I really liked the episode, the new Doctor's pretty different, but after three seasons that's a nice change. Since I only really saw series 5-7 so far, I have a lot of Doctors to catch up on anyway.

I felt the CGI was patchy. I'm glad, having watched the leaked episodes that the score didn't get in the way. The tramp scene was good as a result.

I love Capaldi's Doctor. Both he and Clara are handled excellently in what I've seen.

It was a bit rough up until they entered the restaurant, but after that, I thought it was a solid episode. Totally digging Capaldi in the role though, but I expected that much as he's great in general.

She basically seems to be death incarnate. Which makes sense as to why she seems to think the Doctor's her boyfriend. Who else flirts with death more?

what if she collects the beings that die because of the doctor? And thats why she calls him her boyfriend, he sends her all these gifts.
