Not entirely sold on Peter Capaldi, but that was an enjoyable episode overall. Loved the cameo at the end.

Should be an interesting season, to say the least.

the dinosaur was just a plot mechanic to make the doctor realise how long the half-face man and his droids had been around really.

i thoroughly enjoyed that episode though.

i do miss the doctor who confidentials from the christopher eccleston era that were an hour long.

loving the #doctorwho tweets. 17 year old girls saying "that was boring" and middle aged men saying "fucking epic". i'm glad the new who is targeting the correct demographic now.

some of the comedy sound effects this episode though

yeesh

The worst one was the one after Vastra knocked the Doctor out. Sounded like he was hit by a cartoon hammer.

Holy crap yes, what happened in the fucking editing room there ? As someone who saw the leaks, some of the audio design was VERY questionable in the first part. Got much better in the second one hopefully (I'm glad they didn't ruin the restaurant scene with some shitty track that would ruin the scene)

Overall, very solid although a bit let down by the audio choices in general (I didn't like that they used Clara's theme in the end for the call. Preferred the leak's tone better). And ugh...CGi..not great..but that's what I expect from Who anyway. Clunky, kinda shoddy but loveable.

I'm sad people haven't really gotten a real taste of what capaldi's doctor really is about though. I'm eagerly waiting next week for episode 2 because that's wherei t really starts

Fire that sound effects guy though, really.

Loved the episode, glad the clockwork robots returned I always liked them. Capaldi was great too, I have high hopes for this series now after being a bit bummed out by the end of the Matt Smith run.

Here's hoping River Song continues to not show up.

I thought that lady at the end was

The Rani

Edit : just read this on wiki too i'm more convinced now

A past relationship between the Rani and the Doctor is hinted at[citation needed] but was never elaborated upon, although it is established

From the episode Mark of the Rani

Eventually, the Doctor traps the Rani and the Master in the Rani's TARDIS, where an embryo of a Tyrannosaurus rex starts to grow as the result of a time spillage. Her operation is thwarted

Tell me i'm Not onto something here?

Capaldi was a really good Doctor, but I didn't really like the episode. I've not really enjoyed Doctor Who as much ever since Moffat took over, and while the Doctor changed, the script writing certainly hasn't. I'm gonna stick with it, though. I'm excited to see this promised darker take on the series.

I don't know how she keeps showing up :(

Her story should've been done with Tennant

come on now. there's no such thing. just enjoy the show without worrying who else is watching.

Episode had all the "first episode" clichés though, enjoyed plenty of the call backs, was worried it would go overboard but they didn't cross the line. Jenna was much more enjoyable too, hopefully it stays that way.

Wonky start to the episode with a strong finish. Already in love with Capaldi. Wasn't the biggest fan of 11th, so I look forward to a much more enjoyable show for me.

Also was fun to watch Doctor Who in the cinema.

Anyone that went to the cinema to see it mind detailing the apparent exclusive "prequel" that was apparently aired?

Strax listed through all the previous doctors as a vlog/military info vid. It was pretty funny, lots of jokes about Ecclestones ears.

I don't know how she keeps showing up :(

I agree. She became a lot less interesting when you knew she couldn't die and the mystery of her became unraveled.

Back from the cinema.

Enjoyed it, but the atmosphere *is* a bit better in the cinema anyway. Smirked at the Q&A mentioning that painting along with the disastrous One Direction link-up. Also liked the bonus bit with Strax talking us through the regenerations of the Doctor - think that'll turn up on a DVD at some point.

I learned about the fact they were screening Deap Breath in the theaters over here quite late, they didn't for Day of the Doctor unfortunately, but I managed to grab some pretty nice tickets. I've gotta say it's nice to see Who on the big screen. The audience was quite good too, everyone was really friendly. Lots of teenagers with sonics overall and I spotted some pretty good cosplay.

The Strax bit was great fun. Episode itself was quite good, the pacing was a huge improvement over the S7 stuff thanks to the extra running time this got. Everything had room to breath, you know? :p I hope they keep that up for the other episodes but they'll probably struggle with that again, oh well.

I already liked her in S7 but Clara definitely got some nice characterization in this ep, I hope people will start to appreciate her more throughout this season because Jenna is a very good actress. However I really don't like Capaldi's Doctor. Sorry. I wasn't too keen on him at the end on Time of the Doctor and people said I couldn't judge him on such a short bit but I was right. I know plenty of people will love him but he's not for me. It's not because he's old or harsh or dark or whatever and Peter is a great actor but he's just so, idk, stuffy? I just don't get any enjoyment out of watching his performance. I sincerely hope he'll grow on me but I can't see that happening unless he changes considerably over the course of his run. Shame. :/

Oh yeah and the audio was wonky. It always is. ffs

I found the episode to be okay and Capaldi did good as the Doctor, though I still don't like Clara she isn't interesting at all.

I also liked the new opening.

I find that funny since the episode message seemed to be aimed at them.

I have a feeling this style will actually expand the tone a lot more in America. The whimsical nature of Matt Smith's Doctor has its charms, but there is an entire demographic of older viewers that is largely untapped in America. In all honstly, after series 7 this felt like a much needed shot in the arm for the Doctor AND Clara.

Series 7 was awful.

While I enjoyed the episode, I need more convincing of the new doctor, that Jenna though mmhmmm I can watch her all day, surprised to see the
matt cameo
good stuff

I liked the episode, especially everything from the moment Clara and Doctor met each other for lunch. When he finally "stabilized", Capaldi was awesome. Cant wait to see more.

Nice callback on
Girl with the Fireplace
episode, but shame they are again throwing overexposed
Daleks
into the mix.

i feel this whole series is going to be a big crusade against people who said clara was boring and had no character outside of being a plot device

and that's fine, she was less interesting than wallpaper in series 7 and the new rants she goes on are at least some character development

I'd rather have had this title sequence

Eh. It not only wasn't very attention grabbing, I think I've heard from other people here that this guy is a bit of an offputting tryhard.

Oh yeah, those poor underserved middle aged men finally getting that rare media victory. I guess the last 10 years of constantly increasing viewership and popularity was a sure sign THE WRONG DEMOGRAPHIC was being "targeted" all this time.

I still want to see current Clara meet a previous incarnation of herself (or a future one.)
Would make for a really interesting situation, since the doctor knows that he can't possibly save the other clara.

Loved this. Capaldi's Doctor will take a couple of episodes to judge (which seems intentional), but he's really good in the part. Clara was the best part probably.

My favorite thing: the pacing. That was my major criticism of the recent seasons, but now we got a much better sense of the characters and environments, and the story they were trying to tell. Eleventh Hour was probably a better 'first' episode, but this was very enjoyable. Can't wait to see were they take this.

About the character at the end:
I like the Missy-Master theory. All the speculation about a possible female Doctor in the future - why not make the Master a woman? Certainly allows them to do something new with an important and fun - if somewhat shallow - character. The Rani is a possibility as well of course. She's pretty much what I expected a modern Rani to look like. Still, my guess is that it's going to be a completely new character.

Can't wait for the rest! The show finally feels new again (even though the episode futured mostly familiar characters and a returning enemy - in a way). It'll be interesting to see how the character of the Doctor and the relationship with Clara develops over the next episodes. The different approach in tone compared to previous modern series is probably the explanation of Moffat's greater writing credit on most of the episodes, I'd say.

Wooh fun!

I thought the episode was alright. I liked the Doctor trying to find himself and Clara struggling with the regeneration but I'm kinda sick of Victorian London and Vashtra and her lot. They are cool in small doses but are like, proper secondary characters now which means too many Victorian London episodes and I hate Victorian times. Probably because of school and being bored of learning about that stuff then.

Need to see more Capaldi before judging as this first episode was more the Doctor finding himself and less Capaldi fully in the role and making it his own. I don't care what people say I like the
Daleks
and am looking forward tot he next one. Also no clue who the mystery woman is but as always when there is a mystery woman I'm going to say it's the Rani until proven otherwise.

Maybe I was reading way too much in to it. but I liked the notion that the 11th Doctor was young since he desperately wanted to be loved and accepted after he was basically disowned by his entire race, and all his past companions left him. Kinda makes weird sense that the 10th Doctor subconsciously or otherwise chose to be an approachable puppy dog.

I thought it was very interesting how the Doctor insinuated he may have subconsciously picked his face to tell himself something. And that he thought he seen his face before.

Whu would he give himself Lucius of Pompeii's face?

And you know teenage girls are unable to watch something unless they fancy someone. Brain cells to enjoy things for other reasons don't develop until you hit 30.

The absolute best bits of the episode IMO are the ones where Clara and the Doctor argue and banter in the restaurant. Sounded like old lovers.
