Quite enjoyed that, I think I could watch a show about the daily life of Strax and his interactions with normal society, lol.

Ahaha, that was amazing. One of the campest things the series has ever put out.

Also, this is so a spinoff pilot. "I'll put it in the vault", indeed.

Gatiss' best! Really strong thematically and far in advance of his other episodes.

The ending made me roll my bloody eyes, though. Christ. I'm not adverse to the idea of people piecing things together (like Clyde, lest we forget him, from Rose) but the idea of the two kids doing it just feels a little dumb to me. Alas, I know Moffat loves the 'kids' angle in general, because it appeals to kids more. I get it.

Heh, yea, people have been saying they felt like these three would get their own spin off at some point, but this episode definitely felt like it, the vault line definitely stuck out. And you know I think I would be just fine with that, as long as it doesn't end up like a mess that Torchwood became, well, and started out as, lol.

He's going to have to pull out his best biblio-bastardness to get out of this particular writing hole he's been thrown into.

It actually cracked me up when I saw the trailer, as at the end of the episode I instantly thought the doctor would take them to the safest place possible, and then in the trailer we go from amusement park -> abandoned deadly amusement park -> Cybermen

Is it the original ones? I thought it was going to be the new redesign of the Pete's world ones.

They're mondas cybermen but the design is an evolution of the alt dimension ones.

These are Mondas ones, but they've said in interviews etc the alt-universe ones are also still out there and they could even cross paths one day. However - Cybus design ones are in this episode - they're even in the trailer! So... Moffat's either retconning the design to be identical in both universes (and making this like Victory of the Daleks, an upgrade episode) or there's some alt-world ones there for some reason as well.

As much as I want to believe that trio could be the next Torchwood, the last few years Who's production office has struggled to consistently hit 14 episodes; god help them if they added a spin-off to the mix.

Very good episode. The little visual gag of the Doctors erect screwdriver after whatshername kicked the shit out of those guys made me laugh.

Cyberman Versus Alt Cyberman... that'd be like Alt Cyberman Versus the Daleks (first thing I thought of). Wonder if that will ever happen then now that you mentioned it.

Also speaking of, has the Daleks been used in series 7 at all? If not, I'm surprised kinda but we get a Cyberman episode next week so it balances out I guess.

Aside from Strax that episode was shockingly bad, but as others have said it did feel like an unofficial pilot episode for a spinoff.

Looking forward to next week though; Cyberman + Gaiman should mean a classic episode.

Don't The Daleks have to be used at least once per season or something like that, in order to fulfill contract with Terry Nation's estate? I thought it wasn't going to happen in S6, but there was that one Dalek in TWORS.

Cybermen:

How could Clara possible see "We're gonna tell dad you're a time traveler if you don't take us along!" as a credible threat? She must be one horrible nanny if she can't even keep from being blackmailed by those brilliant children.

I missed it what was the joke?

The name of the kid who gave Strax those ridiculous detailed directions.

I missed it what was the joke?

The kid spoke and delivered directions in the manner of a satnav (turn around as soon as possible, you have reached your destination etc) and his name was Thomas Thomas - TomTom is a brand of satnav that's especially dominant in the UK.

RE Daleks:
The Series 7, part two DVD box set description (so to be clear, one not including Asylum) says:

"With episodes written by Steven Moffat, Neil Gaiman and Mark Gatiss, the Doctor will have to outwit foes both old and new including Daleks, Cybermen and Ice Warriors."

The Amazon description has since changed, but the official website of the DVD distro still says this. It could be a complete series listing, ie a mistake, but if it was you'd think it'd mention Series 7a writers or Weeping Angels.

They'll probably be in the finale in a small capacity, I guess.

This was a step down from the previous few episodes.

Vastra, Strax and Jenny were a welcome addition to the episode. I liked the Doctor's flashback of how he came to Sweetville.

But otherwise it was a bit run of the mill. Just like most of Gatiss' other Doctor Who episodes.

The old series Cybermen changed their design all the time though, and these aren't exactly like the Cybus designs, so it's unreasonable that the ones in the trailer are just regular "our universe" Cybermen.

Oh, yeah - it's just the bulky armour of the alt-universe Cybermen is at odds with the typical classic Who Cybermen, which was skin-tight metal suits, so to speak. Plus not brains in metal suits, but heavily augmented bodies.

Closing Time was written as a Mondas Cybermen episode, but when they didn't have the money for a redesign they removed lines referring to their specific origins from the script to keep it ambiguous - so they may actually confirm Mondas-men went the bulky armour direction later on next week - that's all I mean.

I really, really enjoyed that! I wasn't expecting the monster to be the Doctor, that was pretty great. I was expecting Mr Sweet to be The Great Intelligence, so Diana Rigg showing off a big leech monster on her chest was unexpected- as was the Doctor straight up letting Ada kill the thing, heh.

Strax was hilarious. "Horse, you have failed!"

The Tom-Tom thing was fucking dire.

Probably the only thing I didn't like about the episode. Lots of action, what we got of Clara/Doctor was good (Clara used chair, it's super effective), and it was probably the best Gatiss episode yet. Lots of Creepy-Who goodness.

The kids at the end look annoying though, hope they're not a recurring character. "Our nanny's a time traveller" isn't something the dad's likely to take bloody seriously, is it?

I like that Jenny actually got to do stuff in this episode. I like the Paternoster Gang. They're fun. Giving over the first act of this episode to them turned out quite well.

I'm sorry to break it to you but they are going to be in the next episode.

It's Gaiman. Your excitement about Gaiman should over-ride any qualms about kid actors, even if their appearance at the end of this did seem a bit shit.

What was up with that next-time teaser, anyway? I gather there's Cybermen... and a theme park... and errrrrrrr what the hell else is happening? Looked like a glorious mess.

Okay, I think that was the first time I haven't hated (or at least severely disliked) Vastra and Jenny. I think the writers are finally over the novelty of using them to shock the audience/characters in cringe-worthy ways.

The reveal of the leech on the old lady's chest was really...dumb though. The entire sequence with her and her daughter and the big speech felt very low-intensity compared to the rest of the episode.

Odd thing is, I like the characters of Madam, Jenny, and Straxx, yet they're never written as doing anything worthy of that like, their performances are clichéd, and generally they just bring the cringe.

They remind me of Christopher Biggins in that regard. God bless that man.

true, gaiman is a good storyteller by default. it's just.... kids, oh god -_-

Gaiman + Kids = Good Omens, right? Think positive!

I enjoyed tonights episode, having an alien laughing manically as he ran down a corridor firing a laser gun into a crowd of humans in order to save the doctor was pretty great.

You can tell Moffat threw it together in a weekend. Its shite and on par with Fear Her for dullness.

We should have some sort of group "Fear Her" re-watch, just to remind some people exactly how...blah it was.

There's only one episode of Who on the same level as Fear Her, and it's Love and Monsters.

And one came after the other, didn't it? Fear Her was after L&M. I can't even imagine what that must have been like to watch back in the day. People were probably screaming for another hiatus (like some do now, I'm looking at you GB).

That double blow came after The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, which is still to this day my favourite Who story, so I managed. Plus the finale was great.
