Doctor Who Series Seven |OT| The Question You've Been Running From All Your Life

It showed a lot of promise until they got on the bike, after which its almost as if Neil Cross just gave up.

I find little things super easy to ignore in Who. The whole episode payed off for me with the Doctor's awesome speech and Matt's delivery. It wasn't quite the Pandorica speech, but it was still amazing.

Am I the only one finding the pandorica speech way overvalued? Akhaten speech >>>> Pandorica speech!

In terms of performance maybe - but what the hell was he even going on about? Matt had to overcompensate for the nonsensical dialogue and managed to salvage it - but the scene was still a little perturbing.

The time of Angels cliffhanger speech / Day of the Moon denouement beat both for me.

I like 7B a lot, the only issue I have with Series 7 as a whole is that there's no real stand out episode that every other series had.

Hide
Cold War
Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS
The Bells Of Saint John
Nightmare in Silver
The Crimson Horror
The Rings of Akhaten

For overall series:

5>1>7/6>4>2>3

Is there any information on the Series 7 OST?

While there has been a lot of rehashing there, there were a lot of cool new pieces. Together or not alone, Clara's theme and that new I'm The Doctor variation from the last episode...

It'll be released alongside the complete DVDs most likely. They didn't do one for Series 6 Part 1, and I had to wait ages for that awesome music during River's reveal!

I have recently been introduced to (modern) Doctor who and finally finished marathoning it today (Yes, I took a few breaks :p). I was going to post some impressions in this thread, but I must say that the negativity about the past season really took me by surprise! I loved season 5 and really didn't enjoy 6, which seems to be in line with the general consensus, but I thought that this season got pretty close to 5 in terms of quality, I really liked it. I never cared nearly as much about the overarching plot as of you guys though (by the looks of it of course), so that probably has a lot to do with it.

And I'll admit I generally am easily pleased, I didn't even mind the burping trash can all that much. >>

There was a lovely theme that played when porridge was talking on his spaceship at the end which disappeared just as quickly

Comes in at about 41:05

Speech throwdown! (the ones mentioned in this page + Eleventh Hour & Vincent)

The Eleventh Hour
Atraxi: You are not of this world.

The Doctor: No, but I've put a lot of work into it. [looking at different ties he might wear] Hm, I dunno...what do you think?

Atraxi: Is this world important?

The Doctor: "Important?" What's that mean, "important?" Six billion people live here; is that important? And here's a better question: is this world a threat to the Atraxi? Well, come on, you're monitoring the whole planet. Is this world a threat?

[The eye scans through images of the human race.]
Atraxi: No.

The Doctor: Are the peoples of this world guilty of any crime by the laws of the Atraxi?

Atraxi: [scanning through more images] No.

The Doctor: Okay! One more, just one. Is this world protected?
[The Atraxi scans through pictures of Cybermen, Daleks, Racnoss, Sea Devils, Slitheen, etc.]

The Doctor: But you're not the first lot to have come here. Oh, there have been so many. And what you've got to ask is...what happened to them?
[The Atraxi shows pictures of the previous incarnations of the Doctor, finishing with an image of the Tenth Doctor that the Eleventh Doctor then steps through.]

The Doctor: Hello. I'm the Doctor. Basically...run.

Vincent and the Doctor
Amy: So you were right. No new paintings. We didn't make a difference at all.

The Doctor: I wouldn't say that. The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and... bad things. The good things don't always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don't necessarily spoil the good things or make them unimportant. And we definitely added to his pile of good things.

Pandorica
Hello Stonehenge! Who takes the Pandorica takes the Universe. But bad news everyone. 'Cause guess who! Hah! Listen, you lot, you're all whizzing about. It's really very distracting. Could you all just stay still a minute because I. AM. TALKING! Now, the question of the hour is, who's got the Pandorica? Answer: I do. Next question: Who's coming to take it from me? Come on! Look at me! No plan, no back-up, no weapons worth a damn, oh, and something else. I don't have anything to lose. So if you're sitting up there in your silly little spaceship with all your silly little guns and you've got any plans on taking the Pandorica tonight, just remember who's standing in your way! Remember! Every black day I ever stopped you! And then! And then! Do the smart thing! Let somebody else try first.

Time of Angels
Angel Bob: Sorry, can I ask again? You mentioned a mistake we've made.

The Doctor: A big big mistake. Really huge. Didn't anyone ever tell you? There's one thing you never put in a trap—if you're smart, if you value your continued existence, if you have any plans about seeing tomorrow—there's one thing you never ever put in a trap.

Angel Bob: And what would that be, sir?

The Doctor: Me.

Day of the Moon
The Doctor: Or maybe you could just listen a minute. Because all I really want to do is accept your total surrender and then I'll let you go in peace. Yes, you've been interfering in human history for thousands of years. Yes, people have suffered and died. But what's the point in two hearts if you can't be a bit forgiving now and then. Oh. The Silence. You guys take that seriously, don't you? Okay, you got me. I'm lying. I'm not really going to let you go that easily. Nice thought but it's not Christmas. First. You tell me about the girl. Who is she, why is she important? What's she for? Guys. Sorry. But you're way out of time. Now, come on. A bit of history for you. Aren't you proud, 'cause you helped. Now. Do you know how many people are watching this live on the telly? Half a billion. And that's nothing, because the human race will spread out among the stars—you just watch them fly. Billions and billions of them, for billions and billions of years. And every single one of them at some point in their lives will look back at this man taking that very first step and they will never ever forget it.

Armstrong: That's one small step for man. [the video breaks in, looped] The Silence: You should kill us all on sight. You should kill us all on sight.

The Doctor: You've given the order for your own execution. And the whole planet just heard you.

Armstrong: One giant leap for mankind.

The Doctor: And one whacking great kick up the backside for the Silence. You just raised an army against yourself. And now, for a thousand generations, you're going to be ordering them to destroy you every day. How fast can you run? 'Cause today's the day the human race throw you off their planet. They won't even know they're doing it. I think quite possibly the word you're looking for right now is, "Oops! Run." Guys, I mean us. Run!

Akhaten
Okay then. That's what I'll do. I'll tell you a story. Can you hear them? All these people who lived in terror of you and your judgment. All these people whose ancestors devoted themselves, sacrificed themselves to you. Can you hear them singing? Oh you like to think you're a god. But you're not a god. You're just a parasite. Eat now with jealousy and envy and longing for the lives of others. You feed on them. On the memory of love and loss and birth and death and joy and sorrow, so... so come on then. Take mine. Take my memories. But I hope you're got a big a big appetite. Because I've lived a long life. And I've seen a few things. I walked away from the last great Time War. I marked the passing of the Time Lords. I saw the birth of the universe and watched as time ran out, moment by moment, until nothing remained. No time, no space. Just me! I walked in universes where the laws of physics were devised by the mind of a madman! And I watched universes freeze and creation burn! I have seen things you wouldn't believe! I have lost things you will never understand! And I know things, secrets that must never be told, knowledge that must never be spoken! Knowledge that will make parasite gods blaze! So come on then! Take it! Take it all, baby! Have it! You have it all!

Add the 'Is this planet protected?' speech from his first episode!

Also the 'Pile of Good Things' one from Vincent and the Doctor.

7 is, on the balance, probably my favorite Smith season and up there with 4 for me, trading the really interesting companion for having some of the best episode premises (and executions, to me at least) of the revival in the form of Cold War, A Town Called Mercy, and Journey, as well as not really having any truly terrible episodes, outside perhaps The Snowmen.

The finale could still fuck everything up somehow.

If I had to rank everything, I'd probably go something like 7/4 > 1 > 2/5 > 3 >> 6

Added! I was going to add Eleventh Hour originally but I was afraid of getting carried away and post too many lol.

Please, don't mind our occasional crankiness and do post more of your impressions if you still feel like it, newcomers are one of the best things about the show!

Oh I was still going to! But I think I'm going to wait for the finale first. And man, my memory is awful. I think I'll have to watch some of the earlier parts again, they're all a blur to me now.

Am I the only one who really dislikes, like, all of his speeches? :/

And why do people like Hide so much? probably the most meh episode of 7b to me. At least I remember the Crimson Horror, about all I remember about Hide is the twist at the end.

EDIT: Okay, looking at the ones above the Pandorica speech is pretty damn good. I like that one. All the others...ugh

Eleventh Hour speech is my favorite. Mainly because of the editing and music. It was decent until The Doctor asks, "And what happened to all those races that threatened Earth?" or something like that. Music kicks in big time as it shows the montage of Doctors, ending with Eleven walking through the hologram and in his outfit for the first time. So awesome.

The way Matt embellishes that line - man, goosebumps! As a monlogue it probably isn't the most accomplished, but the plot device that it represents is easily my favourite narrative solution in the show - and the ensuing firefight with river, then heartbreaking scene in the stormcage (there's a first time for everything...and a last time). Who has never been better than day of the moon for me.

Pandorica speech is so good. Just the delivery of 'He who takes the Pandorica takes the Universe, but bad news everyone, cause, guess who!' sums up everything I love about the 11th Doctor.

The Pandorica Opens is probably the best episode there is. The Big Bang lets it down a bit, but it's still really good.

That speech is, to me, worse then 10's being carried up by golden angel robots on Ship of the Damned. Except that was a Christmas special, and 11th Hour was a series premiere that was supposed to set the tone for the new Doctor and Moffat's era as a whole.

Yeah, if Big Bang was stronger it would probably eclipse Army of Ghosts/Doomsday for best finale for me. As it is its a very narrow second.

The 11th Hour speech set the tone for Matt's doctor, completely. He's a showboater, and it got him into trouble in the end. Now he's erasing himself from history lol

Yeah, that's pretty much the main reason I like that particular speech. Life really came and bit hit him in the ass after that one.

As far as I'm concerned The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang are both 10/10 episodes - in different ways of course. For me the Big Bang was the first (and the last) episode 13 I didn't find crushingly disappointing in its simplicity.

Yeah The Big Bang was great. I think my expectations were just too high after the first part. I mean, Roman Britain, Stonehenge, That speech, Rory coming back... and then the revelation that it's all a trap, including Rory, and then all the classic villains teaming up to try and save the universe... nothing could live up to that.

Me too! But then again, Eccleston was my first, so Tennant was the weird new guy whom I could never truly love :D

I think Matt Smith does a wider range of things better than Tennant, who was great at forlornly looking into the distance / angrily admonishing villains but didn't really do much more than that (for which I predominately blame the writing)

I might be in the minority but I actually like Matt smith better as the doc then david tennant

I feel like I'm in the minority here for liking Tennant more sometimes. Matt's version of the character came off as a try-hard originally, and although that's really faded this last season it led to Season 5 not being very enjoyable for me (Season 6 was...season 6)

Wait, what does Smith do besides comically angry, quirky yet friendly, and energetically running around going "oh I'm so brilliant I can save everything!"?

I really like them both, ALMOST equally. Matt edges ahead because of his range, yeah. David was awesome and hilarious and talked reaaaallly fast and could be scary.

I like Matt better because his rage is just that much more terrifying. He has this lingering darkness about him that I adore. With Ten his anger was more...I dunno, tame. He couldn't sell it as well as Eleven.

Have you watched a nightmare in silver yet? I love both doctors don't get me wrong, but Matt marginally edges it.

excuse me, are we retroactively hating A Good Man Goes to War now?

Yeah I didn't notice that... could have done with being a two parter, as most single parter big Mofatt-written episodes could (the fact the Flesh got two parts to do the old "I'm the real Doctor! Shoot him!" bit is pathetic), but I really liked it.

Only downside apart from its length is that Jack could have been in it were it not for terrible US Torchwood :\

Best episode of S6 for this only;

I'm with you. 11>10

I'm catching up on classic Who, so I haven't seen everyone but for the ones I have seen:

11>4>10>9>1>8

Nothing against 8-I love Paul McGann, but it was only one (lousy) "episode".

I really need to see that movie again, I am not really that much into audio dramas. I remember watching it when I was a kid but it never really stuck with me.
