The problem with River is that in the Library and Series 5 she's all cocky and is happy to tease the Doctor and everything, and you think she must have gone through loads of stuff to earn that confidence, but then we find out she was just always like that from the moment she met him.

Basically we never got to see her get any reverse character development.

Don't worry Fiction, I have your back!

Same here. Personally, I quite like River.

Yay!

I love how everyone is so all over the place in this thread. We seriously all like different things/dislike different things, and never the twain shall meet. It makes for some awesome discussion. Also, how we don't get all crazy and start yelling at each other over a difference of opinion.

Rule #58 of the Internet: No matter how much you love something, someone else will think it's rubbish. And something you think is rubbish will be adored by many others.

Very much so. We are 'told' things but not shown them in terms of character development.

Like in Red Letter Medias critique of the prequels - we are told and expected to believe Obi and Anakin are 'good friends', but bar a few snarky interchanges, as an audience we have no proof or justification to buy this over the course of the series.

As such, as an audience member, why should we care when it comes to payoff time?

Also, it gave us a perfect example of the amazing rage of Eleven that I talked about above:

Welp, that video was blocked for me, but I did a search for Colonel Runaway...Soooooooo good. I didn't like 11 at first, but boy has he won me over.

Damn, it hurts to be one of the only people here who really likes River :(

You aren't alone - I love River Song. Haters can hate all they want, doesn't change the fact that she's fantastic!

the parting of ways ,doomsday, last of the time lords, the entire series 4 finale, the end of time - granted the "awesome" set pieces were decidedly less awesome - the intent was still there though -

Is there any bigger offender than the stolen earth cliffhanger and its resolution?

I don't feel like any of those are very high on the non-sequiter count. Yes they have their very very dumb moments, but nothing quite comes close to "taking an old style train into a secret base hidden in the pyramids" levels of sheer "that is really dumb and was clearly shoehorned in because someone thought it looked cool"

I go back and forth on River. Sometimes I love her, sometimes I hate her.

As someone else in this thread said once, River is best when she's a companion, and the story isn't actually about her. The exception to this in my mind is Lets Kill Hitler, because while it is actually an incredibly dumb episode, I love it dearly. Particularly, I love Evil River, who is also Hot River.

I do think after this season, and maybe the 50th, she should go. At least for a while.

To be fair, the entire premise of the episode is that nonsense is happening.

if the cybermen had that super speed ability why did they just stand there and take the raygun shit when clara and that fat soldier were firing them? why couldn't they just zoom past them and destroy the castle?

thought the episode was absolutely terrible.

not even literally pulling the Earth through space like the tardis is a tractor trailer?

I love Doctor Who and I love Neil Gaiman-but that episode was a mess.

On one hand, I want to know what happens so I'm really pushing for the leak. On the other hand, I want it to be a surprise and the waiting will make it all the more better. :(

The worst thing about it leaking would be the ethics of UK newspapers and how they just love spoiling stuff. They'll stick it in there in giant writing and you'll be borked.

So if the finale is as what's been spoiled,
what happened to the dalek episode that the playset spoiled?
