It's still breach of copyright. It works much the same way that you're not entitled to a full private recording of a concert you've attended.

You haven't payed for the Bluray that the episode came on, either; do you think that you're entitled to free copies of all of the BBC's shows on DVD or Bluray?

It costs money to make a DVD, it isn't really comparable.

If it didn't cost anything to run, yeah I kind of would feel entitled to access to archived BBC shows for free.

I agree that torrenting / uploading the episode is a breach of copyright as its not yours to decide how to distribute but you are entitled to record the show from TV and keep that 'copy' so its not quite the same as a concert in that sense.

No you're not.

You're allowed to temporarily timeshift a copy sourced from a broadcast (and only for a broadcast) solely within your own home and solely for watching at a more convenient time.

You're not allowed to keep it under UK law and you never were. There's just little practical deterrent to doing so.

So you'd feel entitled to the music the BBC only pays to play once in perpetuity?

Or do you want the BBC to cancel 9/10s of it's shows to buy longer rights?

Obviously it's a breach of copy right, but if I treat the pirated copy as a BBC iPlayer downloaded episode, and delete it after I've watched it (as I do with the iPlayer) then morally it's practically no different from actually downloading it from the iPlayer in the first place.

Really? I understand the terms of distribution but didn't know specifically it states this.

I found a VHS in my loft the other day with a copy of Throw Momma From The Train taped off TV from 1991. MGM are going to be pissed.

The actual law has no time limit, just that it has to be temporary.

So in a hypothetical court case they’d look to parliamentary intent, and there was some discussion at the time about ninety days but it’s removal probably gives a bit of leeway if you had a good reason for keeping it past that.

But it would never go to court, so it’s not relevant – but the point of it is that there’s no principle that you’re allowed to tape things off the telly and keep them forever, so attempting to justify torrenting on that basis is fails at the first hurdle.

Moffat has confirmed himself for series 8 during red carpet interviews at the BAFTAs. In case there was any doubt! Reckon it'll be his last though.

I am not happy about that. I do not hate Moffat (how could I) , but I think that he was better off writing individual episodes under RTD, compared to working under pressure as a showrunner.

Place your bets for which year it'll broadcast in!

If as he said that he's working on series 8 soon, we must be getting close to a new Doctor announcement - or - Matt's staying for a bit longer than we thought. Because the demands for writing the scripts on who the Doctor is too... I may move my bet from a Christmas regeneration to another split series with a regeneration half way through. Gives a bit more of a production time buffer. Not yet sure.

They've only talked about filming Christmas in a couple of months - not Christmas starting a run as has been tradition, so we may end up being battered around the year again?

I have to work on Saturday so I have to try really hard not to hunt down this leak before then. On the other hand I also wish I could watch it before everyone else does and decides to spoil the shit out of it. I have a habit of mousing over spoilers even when I know I need to not do that. Also, even if I didn't read spoilers all the people complaining about it being a letdown would kinda bum me out and harsh my hype for Saturday.

Really their own fault for having the Blu-Rays ready before the show even finished airing. Silly internet age of the 21st century where everything is done instantly now. It's our own darn fault.

I bet the Doctor's name is
Moonchild
, but then again that joke has probably been done in this very thread already.

He did fine in series 5 and series 6 was compelling enough even if the arc buckled a bit towards the end - I have full confidence in him for an 8th series (assuming he returns to the tried and tested series 1-5 format of 13 episodes with two-parters and some moderate arc progression - anything but the series 7 mantra of "introduce an interesting mystery and ignore it for 6 episodes")

Still no leaks? Daaaaaaaaaamn. Best fanbase?

And Moffat's on for S8? No surprise there, but if he isn't going to do a complete series next April he done goofed.

2014 is a massive year for Doctor Who, with a whole 4 episodes! Including Christmas.

If they really are waiting for Matt to finish up filming the ryan gosling movie to start production on the next series (no gurantee they will, especially if there will be a new doctor after the christmas special) I can see spring being a bit of a stretch. I wouldn't mind 13 episodes starting from the Autumn - in Merlin's auspicious timeslot post-strictly.

They're filming that right now though, aren't they? I think they start filming for Christmas/next series by september, so that movie should easily be wrapped up by then. And if they start in september that should be plenty of time to film a full season of the show before Easter 2014.

Think i read the BBC said that the split seasons didn't work so they won't be doing it again.

It's pretty clear why they were doing it. To disguise the fact that there are 2 series in 3 years.

E: It's not a bad thing either, if they had to skip a year I'm glad they stretched it out over 3 years.

So, does anyone know if the final episode has been spoiled in text format? Seeing as how there are currently no copies of the episode to be found on the Internet, I'm starting to believe that it might indeed be a hoax.

I don't believe it's a hoax, but there have been spoilers available even before the dvd leak.

Curious to find out how many people receive the set today.

I still think there is a chance that this episode doesn't leak into the torrents. It needs to fall into the right (or wrong) hands for this to happen. Also, how many people actually order directly from BBCA? Most probably ordered from Amazon if they were ordering online.

i'd imagine the type of person that orders from bbc america will probably be very hardcore fans and the promise of the video may be enough to stop (at least most) of them

so I'm 'recording' it from the internet and storing it 'temporarily' on my computer.

original rules are silly anyway - temporary but no time limit? stored on a Tivo is barely any different from storing a file on a computer.

Yeah pretty much this.

Anyone looking to pony up for Blu-Rays on pre-order for something like Who are going to be fans and will mostly be respectful of that.

If it's going to leak on the interwebs, I'd probably say it'll be around this Wednesday / Thursday. If fans are getting them through I don't think their first thought this morning will be 'OMG I've just spent £30 - 50 or whatever in dollars on this set, I must share it for free with my internet brothers and sisters'.

If anything I imagine they'll just stroll up and down with a smug tone on message boards, but hey why not?

While I haven't disliked these last few episodes, in fact I've enjoyed a few a lot, something about them just feels really off to me. I like Matt Smith. I really enjoy the character Clara and her actress yet I have no desire to rush and see the episodes like I have in the past. I'm perfectly content with just watching the episodes off my dvr the next day or during the week. :(

I really hope whatever they changed for this part of the season gets unchanged because the show doesn't feel the same anymore. There's no pull any longer I think.

Im gonna stick to my irrational and unsubstantiated belief that it was all caroline skinner's fault and the show should convalesce from now on.

The first episode she was involved in was the doctor the widow and the wardrobe after all...

At this point the episode not popping up online is the worst case scenario to me, it will mean we'll only have to deal with the shitty parts of a leak since everything that happens in the finale is already online.

I know that a lot of the details were already out there before, but now it's 100% confirmed and in evidence because of the BBC bringing attention to the production error. The amount of jackasses who may want to spoil it to other people for the lulz grew exponentially.

In the end it's not much different than waiting an extra week for the new Star Trek film here in North America. I just avoid the threads were potential spoilers may pop up and I'll be fine.

Just caught up with a nightmare in silver - very messy, ill-conceived, and poorly paced in parts but the doctor's internal conflict, though a little trite as a narrative device, was utterly compelling - honestly I could have watched 45 minutes of just that (I enjoyed those sequences more than anything else in the show this year), Matt Smith really sold it in his best performance yet in series 7.

So far:

Excellent tier

n/a

Good (if a little disappointing) tier
1) The Crimson Horror
2) The Bells of Saint John
3) A Nightmare in Silver
4) Hide

Meh tier
5) Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS
6) Cold War

Bad tier
7) The Rings of Akhaten

Pretty sure I know what happens in The Name of the Doctor now. If true, I think it'll be good seeing it come to fruition. Pretty pissed at myself for spoiling it though.

The main reason I haven't been tuning in too much is basically because the episodes are inconsequential. They don't advance the main storyline or develop the characters enough to keep my interest. I know they'll live in the end, so why be excited for an episode? That said, I've still really enjoyed this season.

Again, my problem with the episodes thus far is;

"She's perfect! Amazing girl!"

"I love travelling with The Doctor!"

But they're just words. None of it has any actual impact. I'm not seeing that relationship develop.

Hide is the best episode this half of season 7 so far. Good mixture of intimate setting + epic (didn't expect that time traveling sequence), well-shot and moodily lit, and fantastic guest actors.

I did like it, especially the little twist at the end - but the good ideas that were present should have been elaborated upon a little bit instead of 10 minutes of running around the forest with frenetic camerawork. I also felt that the guest characters, whilst brilliantly acted - were wholly underdeveloped and the advancement of their relationship came across as contrived and needless.

Idea-wise it felt like half an excellent episode protracted to fill 45 minutes.

Yep. You can't introduce a mystery, put character development on hold until its solved, then have an interregnum of 6 episodes in which there is no ostensible growth of any kind, it was a massive lapse in judgement. It would have been slightly easier to swallow if the episodes themselves had been of a suitable quality - but they've been lacking even in that department for the most part - It feels like pretty much every script this season could have done with some good editing to refine pacing / guest roles. Journey to the centre of the TARDIS typifies this, with possibly the worst range of guest characters I can remember in well, anything.

It's unfortunate that Modern Clara feels like the same person we met in Saint John when the series is capable of so much more character-wise. In the same number of episodes Amy had a variety of developments and it was believable how things were affecting her. Even if in the end there's a plot reason for this (I have no idea, haven't read anything) it still hurts the show. Her previous two incarnations had more development in the span of a single episode/special too.
