Doctor Who Series Seven |OT| The Question You've Been Running From All Your Life

Next week's looks like the cheap episode.

Yeah, but UNIT are back so it's all good. It's giving of vibes of the militaristic episodes from RTD's run (WWIII, Sound of Drums, Sontaran Stratagem, etc); those weren't great episodes but I did enjoy them tonally, so it'll be nice to see the Doctor have to put up with people calling him "sir" again. :p

Eh, not too keen on this one. Some good lines but in general the writing was pretty bad I felt, very ham fisted at times.

Not to excuse bad writing, but it was my impression that the script was deliberately overt. After all they were attempting to pay homage to the morality tale aspect of classic Westerns, in other words it was a take that was overly about the consequences of violence and the possibility of redemption. Although I would agree that the script wasn't perfect it was a considerable step up over the dreck that was last weeks episode.

And Midnight.

Oh dear, I'm gonna be the only one who liked Midnight, aren't I?

People fucking love Midnight. I don't care much for squabbling episodes, though. Find it irritating, especially when the Doctor's present (might explain why I enjoyed Children of Earth despite also being full of RTD's "hard choices").

Not pure anymore!
Ugh too many epic poses from the doctor... Hate that about Mofat/Smith, don't recall David Tennant doing "The Poses". Really didn't like the episode at all, really boring. Next week looks interesting, though.

I thought I'd share my W.I.P David Tennant Era Doctor Who in LBP Vita.

No screwdriver or anything close unlocked yet for his hands but Im working on it. Critique?

Did we forget the "Jesus Christ" during Last of the Time Lords?

Midnight is indeed awesome. In fact I'll be off rewatching it right about now :).

Haven't seen this week's episode yet, but you guys aren't making me eager to. You loved last week's and I thought it was kinda boring and all over the place, and now I'm expecting this week's to be worse :/?

Well the doctor does regenerate.

Moffat has pretty consistently explained lots of historical facts (the missing minutes of Nixon tape and the reason he insisted on taping everything in the first place, Queen Nefertiti's sudden disappearence from history, Da Vinci's madness and his paintings etc).

Just waiting for Moffat to have the guts to explain where the entire Jesus Christ legend came from as well.

You mean Van Gogh right?
I would actually like an episode with the Doctor meeting Da Vinci. Could lead somewhere fun.

Personally I really liked this episode. It felt different. It had its weak points but on the whole I think its one of the best Smith episodes. I found it very interesting. I did get a Stargate feel from it, in a way.

Really middling episode and I was a little confused by Amy's "You don't kill Doctor!" when he killed a man and his seemingly sentient robots last week.

She said "When did killing someone become an option," and I think she's referring to a change in him since she was travelling with him all the time, not a change unique to this week. Likewise there was indirect reference to the Doctor's atrocities in the time war from the alien Mengele, so I'm not sure why people think this episode was ignoring that either.

Wait, so all the episodes will be standalone this season? Awwww dammit.

Kinda? Moffat's said naff all about the episodes following the Christmas special. The first 6, yeah, they're standalone. Although I imagine "The Angels Take Manhattan" will tie back into S6.

Haven't seen TCM yet (obviously) but I'm fine discussing this stuff: do we think they'll explain what catalyzed a change in his behavior between S6 and S7? I can't think of anything off the top of my head.

It just seemed an odd thing to say when there wasn't a word said about what he did last week, to me it appeared like she wouldn't be willing to travel with him if she knew he killed a man he didn't need to. However I did like how that seemed to be the only thing that stopped him from doing it, down to him being disgruntled over his choice.

Exactly the way I saw it. Definitely didn't feel like they were ignoring last week. Instead I saw it as Amy noticing the dark side to the Doctor and calling him out on it.

It's worth noting that Amy wasn't even there when he set up the collector guy to die.

nice episode.

i don't like the idea of the doctor involving so much people for his trick but that wasn't that bad. i kinda knew the doctor reaction would have been extreme when he saw the files.

no guns for amy , ever again ..i guess river got the gunslingers genes from rory , then ?

what's the doctor age in this episode ? This changes way too fast
and why does all 3 eps mention a christmas list ?

They always have to put in the joke about Americans all knowing how to use guns and people from the UK don't. It has happened multiple times now.

He said he's 1200, which meshes with the 300 years or so we're aware of since he last stated his age. It still leaves his last statement of being 900 years old after previously, as the 7th doctor, being like 970, kind of suspect.

I still think he doesn't really know how old he is.

It's kind of weird because I felt like that part really tied in well with last week's episode. Last week people were saying "wow, him killing the guy was out of character" and now he's basically about to do the same thing this week, except this time Amy's there to call him out on it and he's starting to realize he's changed a little.

Since the travelling with the Ponds is off and on, I think it's going to lead up to the Ponds leaving him behind and then him realizing he needs a new companion for the Christmas special.

Hate to interrupt discussions on this weeks episode which I haven't yet seen (tomorrow hopefully), but I'm trying to get some of my roommates into NewWho and need suggestions for the best episodes to watch, since I'm sort of hosting the viewings, and don't want to run through all six prior seasons.

So far, I've only shown them Rose to introduce them to the basics of the show, but don't know if anything besides Doctor Dances/Empty Child is worth showing from series 1 as primer.

Dalek, certainly, and The Parting of the Ways is probably worthwhile.

Amazing.

Wow. That was the best episode in years, possibly since The Waters of Mars. I just don't even know how to process all of these emotions. I've always been a Whithouse fan, but this was just so far beyond his previous efforts. The first one that really felt like "From the Creator of Being Human".

The emotional drama, the maturity, the themes, everything was top notch. Jex was a wonderful and complex character both as a villain (but not really) and foil to the Doctor, and the Gunslinger was so good. I loved how both of them evolved over the episode. Isac also gave a great presence in his leadership and death, and evoking the themes of mercy. Seeing this follow on right from last week makes perfect sense (and I'm now completely happy with how Dinosaurs on a Spaceship ended). The Doctor goes through great turmoil and growth, and even Amy was bearable here.

Just incredible. A true tour de force.

Even knowing your post history with NewWho, I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not

Decent episode. Not as fun as the first two, but still enjoyable. Then again, I do love a good Western.
Ben Browder was great. For once, it's nice to get a real American to play an American.
