Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

I just want to confirm if buying a Wiimote+Nunchuck, together with sensor bar (they go for approx. 3GBP on eBay) will allow me to play Wii games on my PC? No need for a Wii then? I would love to play Trauma Team, Xenoblade, etc., without having to buy a Wii (got too many consoles already).

You need a Wii to actually rip the games.

Won't Dolphin play Wii discs? Or are they different size than regular DVDs?

Standard drives wont read Wii Discs. I think there is one drive that you can buy that will let you rip them, but most people use a Homebrewed Wii to rip the discs.

Thanks for the answer. One more thing - how is the emulation? Less touchy than PSXE? I hope I can get good upscale @ 60FPS.

Personally I've found PCSX2 easier and faster on my machine, but I think all in all Dolphin is extremely good with games that it works well with (Which is a lot nowadays). Xenoblade for example is one of those perfectly emulated games.

Course it all depends on how powerful your system is. What are your specs?

PCSX2 works well for some games, but most games I've tried that taxed the PS2 in any way end up running poorly and many have graphical and/or sound issues. Whereas Dolphin has run pretty much everything I've thrown at it at or very close to full speed constantly with perfect audio and visuals (although you do often have to mess around with settings). YMMV I guess?

for the i5-2500kers in the thread, i dont see the point of overclocking cpu, as my stock 2500k runs SMG2 and brawl 99% of the time at 60fps (no AA, but i can turn on MLAA and change that percentage to 98%) at 1080p
(by this more of a gpu issue)

now, of course you play other games, but what i'm trying to get at is that you dont need to overclock your 2500k to play on dolphin
I think its needed if you use LLE. I haven't tried running my 2500k on stock though to test, never found any reason to run it at 3.3

Does Eternal Darkness have any problems with emulation?
I tried it a few months ago and it ran well, but I think it depended on revision. If you do try it out, let us know how it goes. Check the ED thread at the official Dolphin site for more info.

Can anybody that has one of these give some input on how well they work? I'm thinking about buying one for the computer I'm building.

Is there a way to transfer my saved games from the Wii to the PC and thereby Dolphin? Do I have to convert the saves to a particular format, or do I have to start over?

There is a way, but it's a very long-winded process and not nearly worth the effort imo. http://forums.dolphin-emulator.com/thread-374.html (Scroll down to "Tutorial: How to unpack saves in .bin format" and "Tutorial: How to get wii saves from your SD-card")

Transfer to your SD card.

In Dolphin. Tools -> Wii Save Import.

They'll be in the private/wii/title folder. Type in the folder name into this database if you're not sure what game the folder belongs to (if you've transferred multiple saves).

Well, that's a lot easier than the method I was using. Thanks!

Just got Super Mario Galaxy working perfectly on my setup, shit's amazing. No More Heroes runs at a poor framerate though, specifically on the overworld. Is this normal? SMG is much more resource intensive, I'd assume.
No More Heroes didn't run too well on the Wii itself so I wouldn't expect it to run well on your PC. I don't actually use Dolphin*

Don't know about NMH, but Other M runs better on Dolphin than on Wii.

A bunch of games run better on Dolphin. House of the Dead Overkill is another one.

Loved the original on DS, finally getting around to playing the sequel. The interface translated to point-and-click really well, as expected. I'd probably play this way over the wii version, even without the visual enhancements.

Just started using Dolphin, seriously, today. Don't know if custom configs are as impactful as with PS2 emulation, haven't messed around too much. So far everything works well out of the gate. The music cuts out in SMG2, though. Is there any way to fix that?

They suck. Rawdump takes a huge amount of time and you have to patch the images after that.
It's really more hassle than it's worth. Did it once, never again.

I keep trying to use that Wiiji software but I keep getting an error about "No Virtual HID Driver Available" and it doesn't work with squat. Grr.

Does this game work properly on Dolphin now?
You couldn't interact with world objects the last time I tried... :/

Is it typical for Goldeneye's framerate to be in the mid-20s with action going on, or is my CPU just too slow to emulate it properly?

Phenom II x4 @ 3.5GHz

My i5-2500k @ stock does the same thing. Haven't bothered to overclock it to see if that helps, nor playing with any options. Runs smooth until enemy AI shows up and needs to be processed.

I dunno, I played the first mission of Goldeneye on Dolphin a while back and the framerate appeared to drop to the low 20s whenever things got hectic, which is consistent with how I remember it running on actual hardware, but according to FRAPS it never dropped below 30.

So I'm finally updating my 10 year old computer. Primarily to play games on Dolphin =P

Using this guide as reference, my new PC would fall under the "very good" category. Would that be enough to run games at full speed/beautiful graphix on Dolphin? Specifically, Wind Waker?

Hm. Well, Dolphin is a very CPU-heavy program, and I would assume any current "standard" Dolphin build would have at least an i5-2500 processor running at stock speeds (or overclocking, if using a 2500K). Could you post the specs of your new PC? What kind of CPU/GPU are you planning on using?

Wind Waker is a popular game for emulation; I'm certain there are folks out there who will have tried it with whatever setup you're planning and have posted the results somewhere. I would imagine the game would be playable (in HD), but I'm not sure about the framerate.

Edit: Here is a video of the game running in 30 FPS with a 955 BE (like in the guide's 'very good' build) and a less powerful video card. I don't know Spanish, so I can't tell if the author is saying it's running in 720p or 1080p, but it's in HD nonetheless.

So I picked up a bluetooth dongle thing for eventual use with Dolphin but the stupid thing won't install properly. I'm pretty sure it's conflicting with MotioninJoy drivers for a PS3 controller but I just can't figure out how to get it working. Any advice?

You shouldn't have any problems with Wind Waker. Other games may be too taxing for your system, though.

yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

What about Galaxy 2? Honestly, I don't expect it to be possible with those specs, but someday I'll play my game of the gen in glorious 1080p.
