Donkey Kong Bananza |OT| Red Faction Gorilla

Down to the 3rd world but I'm stopping for the day.

"Nostalgia country" was such a fun throwback. Including the hidden path and banana

Unlocked last night at 9PM, finished the first level and saved right after the DKB logo finally appeared and fanfare played. Took about an hour, I was too tired to keep playing. Getting old suuuuucks. Can't wait to get off work, eat dinner, play. Staycation all next week. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Right? I remember when I used to get these 10pm unlocks, play til 1am or later, and be good to go for work five hours later. I did the exact same as you last night instead.

Is there any downside to destroying too much or should I just go ham smashing through each level?

Smash as much or as little as you like, that's the beauty of it. You can go crazy exploring by smashing/digging everything in sight, or (and the more practical option imo) you can follow the numerous clues to discern where hidden stuff is.

I just want to emphasise how well they've pulled this off. I was worried that the digging mechanic could potentially make level design superfluous, and I couldn't have been more wrong. The game exists between dual layers of destructible and non-destructible terrain, and the balance is sublime, creative genius. Shame on me for doubting the Mario team.

So good

Okay I've only played it for 5 minutes but MY GOD THIS IS AWESOME. First impressions are: 1) It looks so clean and sharp in docked mode. I wasn't expected this from the Switch 2. For some reason I still expect the typical Nintendo Switch blurryness that you got with the Switch 1 in docked. I tried it in handheld mode quick, looks fine, nothing crazy, then docked it and my lord it looks SOOO good. Crisp 4k. Yes I konw it's AI upressed to 4k but still, it works great. As someone who's been playing the "4k" version of Odyssey for the last week, this looks SO much better than that game and Odyssey is still a very pretty game on the Switch 2 with the free update. DK looks so good.

2) I can't stop destroying rocks. Turn on vibration to STRONG in the options and just swing away. It's so fun to just smash everything. It reminds me of that Hulk game back in the day. Also, I enabled the swapping of A/B in the DK game settings so that jump is B like normal people use. I've gotten so used to Odyssey that I had to SWITCH it (pun intended). Ok back to the game.

Also: Best Buy should learn NOT TO PUT giant ass Pickup stickers on everything. They put a giant ass sticker on the back of my DKB Amiibo and I wanted to scream. Luckily, I got it off without any residue but still, very annoying.

I'm thinking about all the boring adult shit I have to get done today while the game box sits there taunting me.

Will hopefully have maybe an hour to try it out tonight :( damn real life responsibilities

Played the first hour or so; having a great time so far.

Smashing things feels good, as does basic movement. I love endearingly whacky it is, reminds me of the Rare games in that way.

So far so good.
Interesting, I had the thought that it felt like a true spiritual successor to DKC in a way. A "real" Donkey Kong game, which is a feeling I never got from DK64, or even the Retro games.

I'm only like two hours in. I thought the first hour or so felt a little jank, but I probably went over board thinking the point was to destroy everything. There were times I couldn't even see characters of any sort, just close ups of walls being blasted. But then I got to the first real level and it started feeling better. Movement is fun, and the game plays fast. We'll see how it goes.

I also think it looks pretty good. Feels like the Switch 2 has enough power (I hope) for Nintendo to get their art style across and keep 60fps as a thing. I don't want them to go back to 30fps for the next Zelda for example.

So far so good with DKB though.

I don't think most people are realizing how big this release is going to be. I really do believe this is going to be the highest reviewed game of the year.
I played the intro. Not sold yet.
Botw game me better vibes and
Death stranding 2 game me better vibes.

We will see.

I kinda bought it because I could get it very cheap (for a Nintendo release) and wasn't even that hyped going in, just figured I went for a quick try out. 2 hours later and damn, this game is amazing at making you feel like a kid again. Odyssey didnt click with me at all, but this game instantly got me hooked. The gold and destruction is so damn satisfying...

Speaking of unlocks, am I the only one who hasn't changed DKs' appearance yet? I still have all my fossils. Pink Fur almost got me..

This is the best donkey kong has emoted ever. And he feels amazing to control. His upward punch is so satisfying. Im laughing my ass off at how great he feels to control and his stupid ass personality.

It sounded like in the overview on YouTube that you can ride worms back to previous levels. There is a worm transit system.

My amiibo is at Best Buy waiting on me to pickup. But I maybe am done with them given the price increase. I liked when they were $12.

passed what you might call the prologue and arrived at what could be called the first "world".
so far not impressed..the destruction is an intriging mechanic but so far the level design did not seem to account for it at all.

also the camera is a bit irritating.

hoping it gets better now

this game will fucking kill me...
I am a 100% junky when it comes to platformers... and this is a game where almost everything can be destroyed and could hide something beneath...

it took me 2h to get beyond layer 100 to layer 101 🙃

Just been playing it, only the first part, but Donkey Kong is mid at best imo from first impressions, I don't think it would even be in my top 10 3D platformers.

I put the treasure tie on and maxed it to level 3 and now every time I go nuts I find 10 chests so I probably should take it off if i want more of a challenge.

Have only played 10 minutes so far, liking the destructive environments - it's fun.

Question to people who have played more.. does the colour palette get more varied as you get further into it? It's a bit off-putting at the moment.

The tech issues are bad imo and I don't get the feeling the gameplay in the bland looking and sparse world can overcome the tech issues.

Nintendo MUST have seen Astrobot while making DK, and imo this pales in comparison to Astro from the looks of it.

I might have to return my order unopened :messenger_neutral:
Been playing for 52 seconds and the game sucks so far. Wouldn't even put it in my top 100 3D platformers.
I'm glad y'all gave it a chance. Sorry, it ain't meeting your expectations.

Oh damn, I'm nearly at the end of the 2nd main area and I completely forgot attire in this has passives linked to them. Oops. Time to go and look at everything again.

Yeah like every other platformer it dips into a bunch of different biomes that you would generally expect. The first mining area isn't that great.

I was going play a little on my lunch break for 30 mins.. 3 hours later I had to force myself to stop. This. game is great at ... " just one more thing".

switch 2 nintendos is nintendos beest mode tricking kart world and smash dk armazing switch 2 delivered fast food and ice cream game over we are going to feest so fat

Played the prologue. Really intriguing and impressive mechanics. I will have to reprogram my brain a bit to not feel compelled to smash and dig through everything. It was neat finding a little secret in the first area although I didn't get a tangible reward for it (just one of those "Hey, I found a secret" feelings). Near the end of the prologue you can really start getting a feel for how the level design is going to play out and it's promising!

It does that modern Treehouse thing where every stranger is a singular "they" though which always reads weirdly.

Oh my god. What a game. Getting to the first biome is so wonderful. The game feels more like Odyssey until that point, but then you hit that first Biome and it instantly feels like Dk!! The visuals, the music. It's just pure Donkey Kong magic. The yellow grass is so beautiful as well. .

Just a heads up for UK Gaf.

I got this delivered 2 days early from TGC... still the best (and only AFAIK) place to pre order from. 48 hours before release day it was in my hands. Wild

Been playing non-stop since I picked it up. It really is a lot of fun.

Camera has been a bit wonky at times, but I feel it got better when I increased the movement sensitivity.

I've been spending all my skill points towards the radar thing, so that I can find even more stuff.

They used to be great. Then they started taking money for pre orders in advance so I fucked them off.

ShopTo still going?

I'm doing my best to avoid spoilers and stuff so I could go in mostly blind. It's going to be hard since Target still hasn't even shipped my game. And they're using some shipping company called On Track or something that I've never even heard of while shipping from the other side of the country.

I think I will honestly have more fun with this than Odyssey.

Odyssey will likely be a better "pure" platformer but DKB being more like a brawler platformer or more ala Steamworld Dig but also combined with much better traversal and and with metroidvania like abilities that unlock new parts of levels and in the past ones just seem more my cup of tea than Mario. To be seen.

Found Rambi just standing there in the first layer, but I didn't find a way to interact with him, am I missing something or will that be for later?

I'm only a few hours in but this might be my game of the generation so far. It's got that Nintendo magic I haven't felt since BotW launched.

I love a well executed collectathon and this is shaping up to be the best ever. Constant rewards for exploration, tons of shit to unlock, super solid controls, sublime sound effects and music, vibrant graphics. Just a fucking all around joy that taps into the very essence of what a videogame should be.

I wasn't super interested in this game when it was first revealed and went into it blind, and goddamn I'm pleasantly surprised.

My god this game is so fucking gorgeous, to people who say this looks like Switch 1 game need to eye doctor or something.

And the is so god damn fun, the controls are buttery smooth and feels so satisfying to destroy stuff thanks to its feed back and sound design.

We're only six weeks into this generation, so that's fair!

And yes, I count my generations by Nintendo, not by whatever those other goober companies do.
