That's the case of EPD Kyoto, not EPD Tokyo located in a completely different place. The vast majority of Super Mario Odyssey staff was not credited on other EPD projects afterwards.
I thought EPD Tokyo would be bigger by now. It's kind of strange that Nintendo keeps so much development in Kyoto; I guess Tokyo is too expensive?

They're headquartered there, that's why. Tokyo isn't particularly expensive and is the home of high profile development companies like Sega Corporation, Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc., Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc., Konami Digital Entertainment Co., Ltd. and Square Enix Co., Ltd.

I understand that a lot of studios are based in Tokyo. That's why I thought Nintendo would be interested in expanding in Tokyo attract more top talent who might not want to go to Kyoto for work.

7-8 years to make a ps4 looking game.

Give it another 1 more gen and Nintendo may consider to go for multiplatform.

And leaving out unreleased games and Labo packs it's around 1 release/month by the time Switch 2 released... Now tell me which publisher has this cadence of releases.

Nintendo can take all the time they want with specific games because they have enough of them to release at any moment basically.
It's not every month and most definitely not 1.3/1.5 per month. Nintendo is good quantity wise, but no need for the dumb hyperbole, there are several publishers with a similar amount of published content each year. Bandai Namco Entertainment beats them most of the time, for example.

But DEI initiatives can be, for example, childcare support or a more flexible/"harmonious" work-life balance; stuff like that. Most of long development has nothing to with DEI or whatever the fuck new world is….mostly about time budget man power and more importantly trying to get their idea game mechanics working on a full game.

Like I said in my original post not everything is about woke or DEI bullshit.

Nintendo has the bulk of their devs slide around across multiple projects; people don't just stand around working on one game for years. This game probably stayed in the prototype phase for a long time.
This is a Tokyo studio though. That happens in Kyoto because it's the same building. I don't think it applies here honestly.
 




Interesting point to note and to add to the discussions where some folks say how streamlined and relatively quick Nintendo development is compared to other most other AAA projects, turns out it isn't that different after-all.
Perhaps what took long isn't the "actual" development. The design of the game, it's systems, how it plays, etc all factor into the overall timeline.

What a company outputs has to show "why" otherwise yeah, people will say "it's not okay" and people can say what they want.

Also trying make destruction mechanics work on original Switch. Just like how Team ICO trying make Last Guardian work on PS3 but it was too much for the system.

Edit: also one of the biggest challenge in destruction mechanics is not the tech but rather making game a fun around destruction.

This is something even Kojima struggled with MGR, with that game they show off the tech which you could cut anything but he and his team struggled making proper game around it.

Which they end up giving it to Platinum Games and they tone down cutting mechanic significant amount.

DKB was announced in April and is releasing in July.

Perfect Dark and Everwild were announced in 2019 I think, and got cancelled in 2025. Is that what you're talking about?

You're right that it's not 1.3 or 1.5/month, but if you're talking about Nintendo-published games that received physical releases, then the average for the Switch's lifetime is either slightly over or slightly under one game per month.

I counted earlier using a more conservative criteria (only counting Pokemon games once instead of counting both versions, not counting regional publishing deals like Octopath Traveler, etc.) and I believe I ended up with 96 games in 99 months.
