Just beat 6-4 tonight.
Blurry Flurry. Man, that was hard--similar in difficulty to Gear Getaway and Hot Rocket. So satisfying to beat, though. I was really surprised when it became a mine cart snowball level. That was awesome. I was relieved there wasn't more rocket barrel stuff to do...I actually love rocket barrel levels but that one was just brutal for me.

Crazy Jane doesn't care, as long you enjoy yourself in the sweet breeze of Tropical Freeze

Wow, is this a Doom Patrol reference? (JC, I think I have a Grant Morrison Doom Patrol TPB if you want it...)

I like your style, friend.

You guys are convincing me. Some game series I like to really get into chronologically, but others I don't mind to roll around in that sweet breeze uninitiated. Looks like this will be one of them.

The environmental art in this game is so good that I really want Retro to make another one. More than Metroid, to be honest.

I mean, imagine if Retro made a Krazy Kremland, with bramble thickets and rollercoaster tracks entwining around giant beehives, under a night sky full of fireworks... Imagine a city-themed world with glittering skyscrapers, Mirror's Edge-style, and red construction girders reminiscent of the arcade Donkey Kong... Imagine an oriental-themed world with bamboo forests and pagoda shrines and glowing paper lanterns... Imagine a lava-suffused gem-encrusted mining world where a new remix of Mining Melancholy would be totally at home... Imagine a glitzy casino world with giant roulette wheels and slot machines and neon signage everywhere... Imagine a haunted forest full of lush foliage, moonlit fog and colorful spirits, just like in DKC2... Imagine a factory world that focuses on pollution, radioactive waste, black and gritty metal, etc., where we could have a remix of the factory theme from DKC3...

There are so many world themes I'd love to see rendered by Retro's art team. SO MANY!

Juicy Jungle makes me wish berries were in season. I recently got a Magic Bullet (nifty lil' blender that turns upside-down into a cup!) and I'm hankering for some fruit smoothies...

DKVine
, I love you.

Though Donkey Kong Country Returns was sucessful in resurecting our favorite ape-based franchise, many fans feared the game (and its 3D remake) would prove to be mearly a one-off, leaving them out in the cold.

Cue Retro Studios at E3 2013 to deliver the ultimate chill pill. Donkey and Diddy are back for another adventure, this time in glorious High Definition ("HD", I like to call it; I just made that up off the top of my head but you can use it yourself if you like), but they better stay frosty as they battle yet another new slew of enemies: the cold-hearted Snomads! Not only that, but fan-favorite Dixie Kong has been brought out of cold storage, returning for a playable role in an original platforming game for the first time since 1997. And speaking of first times, Cranky Kong has broken out of his supporting role pigeonhole like a glacier, standing alongside the other three Kongs in their latest adventure.

Fans of underwater and snow levels are no longer given the cold shoulder either, as both archetypes return to the fold. Finally, in a move that truely proves hell has frozen over, ace composer David Wise makes a welcome return to the Donkey Kong franchise to provide the soundtrack.

It's ice to see you again, Kongs.

...I'll stop now.

...or WILL I?

Yes.

Sweet fancy Cranky Kong, that looks good

1. Can you explain how you pick up the DK barrel while you're rolling?

2. What's with the plucking animation stuttering when you use it to clear a path? Exploit or a replay glitch? I've seen this on Mangrove Cove as well, when players pluck the giant tree out of the ground.

Nice run. It impresses me to see so many precision high bounces with Diddy/Dixie. I suck at doing them.

1. I explained this in a previous post a few pages back.

2. That's what happens when you jump during a pluck. It's possible to pull the handle out quicker sometimes when you jump.

Just one question Retro: Why, just why has the demo reel at the start screen to be a badly compressed 30fps video? Fix this fo the love of all demo stations out there.

.

You seemed to explain how to retain momentum when picking a barrel up while landing from a jump (very helpful for 1-1, thanks), but the replay for 1-B shows him simply rolling into the barrel, picking it up, and proceeding to jump without losing speed through the whole process.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about Rayman Legends Wii U.

This is what I was wondering as well. Looks downright ghastly.

Just found out a useful tip!

You can stack Partner Barrels you buy from Funky's Shop, this is very useful on the levels where you need to take Cranky or Dixie to the end (such as some of the Rocket Barrel levels) for Puzzle Pieces. Also, I've yet to test it, but I assume this means you can use this trick to basically have 6 Extra Hearts for Bosses too.

Between this and Pikmin 3, the WiiU could be nicknamed The Amazing Fruit Machine.

Gaim the Fruit Samurai in June too, lol.

Busted Bayou. I wish I could record it because it took me so damn long to get it haha.

I knew Dixie was better than Cranky at this one.

Awesome! Gonna have to watch this later. And it's for Busted Bayou... love the music in that level.

Roll and jump just before the barrel, press and hold grab just as your get off the ground. Release the barrel as soon as possible. You'll retain the full roll jump momentum and by the time you hit the ground your new buddy with be on your back.

I haven't managed to get a run in yet I was 100% happy with so I haven't uploaded anything yet, but how'd you manage to make it quicker with Dixie? Swear everything shortcut-related in that stage seemed built around Cranky's pogo bounce (while Dixie's hairspin slows your momentum a bit).

I dig all of the Snowmad designs. You have four broad categories of Snowmads:

- Penguins
- Owls
- Hares
- Walruses

I really dig the walruses. Waldough cracks me up.

This may be a recurring question but I'll shoot anyway -- so, I'm safe just skipping past Donkey Kong Country Returns and heading right into Tropical Freeze, right?

I mean, I'm clearly not missing any intricate continuity, and though DKCR looks like a wonderful game, Tropical Freeze seems to surpass it in most respects (according to what I've read) except for difficulty, which I'm fine with as I'm not a platforming nihilist.

Put my OCD at ease, GAF.

I don't know about "intricate" but there are some recurrent themes from the first game.

The last world is very familiar yet different.

What do you actually get for beating the Time Attack Mode? Anything? As far as I can see it is just for bragging rights.

Only the KONG letter and puzzle pieces seem to have tangible rewards.

Just beat 1-K. Thank the lord for the fact that you don't need to get the puzzle pieces again after you die... and thank the lord for Dixie Kong.

Must have died at least 2-300 times, and that's not an exaggeration. It became one of those levels where you know exactly what you're doing but yet fuck up right at the end. I breezed through the level the last fifty times or so but still managed to fail on the last part.

You get medals, the best being the shiny gold medal. So if you really want to do it all, you'll aim to get a medal for each stage.

But it's more about bringing the world together in friendly competition as incentive to truly master the platforming at hand.

Hmmm...I just can't get into this game. I was the same way with Returns. I'll certainly beat it and get the secret stuff, etc, but I just don't get that sheer joy of finding out what the next level holds like I did with 3D World.

I like the music, the game certainly looks pretty, but I always feel like there's something missing...

I LOVE the bosses. In fact, I'll go so far as to say they're the best bosses I've ever seen in a platformer. They're lengthy, challenging battles, but never unfair. The game throws health at you almost constantly throughout each fight.

I don't know about the best but it seems Retro really put the effort into these bosses.

They were decent in Returns but these are definitely a step up.

"Chum Chucker Charlie" is my favorite enemy name ever. The Snomads are a huge step up from the nonsensical Tikis. On the whole the enemy design is much better than Returns, which I felt erred on the side of the more nonsensical Mario and Jungle Beat-esque creatures, which I never felt fit with Donkey Kong Country. The Snomads feel much more at home, being based more plainly on animals. Shit like the Tikis and whatever the Forest boss of Returns was called can stay in the past.

The Snomads are still no replacement for the Kremlings though.

I am also impressed by the enemy design.

For me though, Kremlings are to Donkey Kong what Goombas and Koopas are to Mario. As good as the game is, its missing something and it's that.

1. I don't do it while rolling, I do it to get off a roll. You have to press jump and the grab button at the same time during the roll and you'll grab the barrel and jump at the same time!

2. Spam the jump button while plucking and you'll pluck a bit faster.

Dixie is a lot faster for the ending. You can skip the last pluck (the big tree) and reaching the end barrel is also a bit quicker. For the entire first section Dixie and Cranky are pretty much equal, the pogo jump has the same speed than rolling so it's the same. Only difference comes in the part where you have to pluck a vine to proceed. There, with Cranky you can time the pogo jumps to skip the vine. With Dixie I managed to find a way to quickly bounce off the bugs (except the last one!) and skip that section. If you watch the replay you'll notice I have to use the hairspin in the last bug but maybe there's a way to actually skip off all three. I'm sure one of those talented guys (Nihashing and co) will find a way to do that!

For me though, Kremlings are to Donkey Kong what Goombas and Koopas are to Mario. As good as the game is, its missing something and it's that.

Personally, I never felt the Kremlings became "iconic" designs until they became pirates in DKC2.

I'm glad Retro got to stretch themselves creatively, and I'm enjoying the Snomads. The Tikis were generic, and the end boss where you fight the two hands is something that has been played in everything from Kirby to Mario.
