Donkey Kong Is Getting the AAA Treatment. What Nintendo IP Is Next?

That last Direct had me tearing up ever so slightly. Nintendo has finally embraced Donkey Kong and given it the full AAA treatment. I'm sure many of us saw this coming due to a number of things like DK's role in the Mario movie, the product branding separating itself from Mario, the theme parks along with the in game nods and marketing throughout the Switch generation. It was clear Nintendo had been positioning DK and friends to be front and center for a major game or 7 for the foreseeable future.

Remember when my girl Dixie Kong got announced for Mario Kart Tour? That announcement trailer she got? Something to the effect of "This girl is no stranger to Nintendo!" Then proceeds to show her staring games DKC2 and DKC3. If my memory serves right no other character got that kind of introduction, at least not up to that point. It really struck me as out of the ordinary.

When was the last time Donkey Kong got this type of "full budget" treatment? Donkey Kong 64. Country 1 was something of a cultural phenomenon to live through and all 3 SNES Country titles were a success. Diddy Kong was getting 1st billing in multiple titles when Luigi was relegated to ending sequences and sports titles. Banjo Kazooie then showed up and told the world that Rare was not playing around, they meant business! You just knew at the time Nintendo was like do what you need for DK64, go nuts. And nuts they went.

Despite good sales and good critical reception at the time, I'd argue that DK64 did not do the series any favors going forward. Rare buyout or not, if DK64's formula were successful it would have been adopted or carried on within the DK series itself or other IPs.

Retro took on the mantle and did some amazing things with the proven 2D Country formula. As 2D titles it's hard to escape a certain perception that games like that are "easier" to make, less complex or maybe less ambitious. Maybe it's true or maybe it's all relative, I imagine a developer could speak up and school me on the subject. When I played Returns and Tropical Freeze I would frequently stop and analyze the world around me and was always amazed at the 3D world Retro created around the 2D stages. All that to say that during the Retro era Donkey Kong was no longer standing shoulder to shoulder with Mario, Zelda or Metroid when it came to reverence. Those series reliably got 2D and 3D outings and it has always been the 3D titles that carried so much figurative weight in the gaming world at large. It's funny because any Metroid would kill to have the sales of Returns or even Tropical Freeze.

Anyway here we are now! Donkey Kong being developed in house and it looks like they are going hard! The world looks huge with tons to see and do. The gameplay looks as rich and varied as any 3D Mario. Skill trees for a Nintendo platformer? It looks to be taking on real story beats, complete with voice acting(even if for just one character). Watch it be told through memories lol. I guess Miyamoto hasn't been around to put a halt on too many story segments. Or perhaps after working on these movies he sees more value in it.

Whatever the case, the heads at Nintendo have approved the development of a Donkey Kong game that looks and feels as ambitious as any 3D Mario or 3D Zelda. In some aspects more ambitious! This isn't a test or experiment like my beloved Jungle Beat. You know for DECADES there's been at least one Donkey Kong lunatic at Nintendo just waiting to get one of those Odyssey or Breath of the Wild budgets. If this releases with as much positive feedback as it appears to have now, Donkey Kong will once again be spoken in the same breath as Mario and Zelda.

If this is successful( and it will be), what other IP could be next for such a big Nintendo push?

Do you even like that Nintendo is pushing DK this hard? Or would you rather these resources go elsewhere?

I'd hope Yoshi or Star Fox get this kind of backing someday.

Next needs to be a new 3d Mario......we haven't had a new one since 2017 with Odyssey.

Outside of that, a new Starfox title would be cool or dig even deeper and do something with Kid Icarus

I have always wondered why they never tried to give Fire Emblem a JRPG spinoff, the new games added social life sim elements (Persona-like) so maybe a Fire Emblem AAA JRPG could actually work?

It's the type of shakeup that I would want for Metroid, as it has been stuck between being either Super Metroid Sequel #5 or Prime Sequel #4. Even though Team Ninja tried and failed, I think Nintendo themselves (especially the Odyssey/DK team) could think of something unique for Metroid that isn't another one of the two styles I just mentioned.

I think Nintendo will just come up with the gameplay idea first and pick the IP that best fits the idea. That's pretty much how they function. Kid Icarus could have serious potential with the flight aspect. It's also possible that Wario or Peach gets a high budget game someday. Peach seems most likely considering the floating in gameplay. That's the kind of thing Nintendo would build around.

On the one hand I'd really like to see a new Zelda.

On the other hand, I'm scared of seeing the new Zelda.

I don't know if it's a joke, you can't be this spot on and clueless at the same time

I dunno man, but I'm super hyped DK is finally getting a real glow up. This looks like a main AAA Nintendo game and not a nostalgia fueled AAA Nintendo game, and they usually only reserve this treatment for tentpoles. No matter what, it is clear Nintendo is hoping to preserve the DK IP with this game for years to come. Count me as hyped.

It's been a while since Fire Emblem and you know they are putting a lot of resources into the next one.
I dunno. FE Engage was a dumpster fire. Last good Fire Emblem was Shadows of Valentia.

Although I think FE Heroes had a big hand in the direction Fire Emblem went in.

I liked the intro to 3 Houses but when they went all Persona with the School nonsense it became super lame super fast.

They really doubled down on the dating simulator stuff.

I wouldn't go that far but the game got lot of unnecessary hate for no good reason....the game still very fun with very fun combat system.
The only thing bad about it is the very limited fanservice and utter lack of Fire Emblem standins as demons...and the final boss is an asshole.

At the very least I think Pepsichan would have fit in better in TMS then Engage.

These games were a big hit on 3DS and Switch and have been fallow. It's going to come back in a big way.

Has almost nothing to do with actual Fire Emblem or SMT. It's just Oshi No Ko Persona which finishes with a hilarious Fire Emblem theme musical number after beating the final boss.
I had Fire Emblem characters and classes, the SMT/Atlus part comes from the combat.

By the way I don't blame Nintendo for not touching Star Fox at all. There is no winning with that fanbase.

  • You make Star Fox 64-2, it's not enough (Star Fox Assault).
  • You make an action adventure game mixed with Star Fox, it's not enough (Star Fox Adventures)
  • You try and give it unique gameplay mechanics, it's not enough (Star Fox Zero)
  • You try and give them a more open, strategic game, it's not enough (Star Fox Command)
  • You un-cancel Star Fox 2, it's not enough.

Maybe I'm very people who enjoyed that game, sure the characters and story not all that great but the actual gameplay and map I actually really liked.
The gameplay is the best in the series...everything else though...

On Star Fox. Assault was amazing, Adventures was built on the bones of a separate game that was going to be Dinosaur Planet, Star Fox Zero forced controls no one wanted, Command had Fuel nonsense and was hyperfocused on the Stylus.

And of course there was Starlink. Which I have mixed feelings about.

There is much they can do to worldbuild with Star Fox but they just let it sit there and rot.

Wario Land 5

Just wish Nintendo would try something more weird and creepy and less kid friendly. Just look at the bosses from Wario Land 4:

I'll chime in to the StarFox quire. I think there's loads of potential there as long as they're not fixed on limiting it to being a rail-shooter.

I'd love to see more of Kid Icarus as well. Uprising was phenomenal.

Haven't played dk since snes one

Where do I start? I currently own a switch, switch 2, and 3DS

Tropical Freeze is a masterpiece. If you can only play one modern Donkey Kong game, it should be that one.

Anyway, back on topic, I wish I had an original answer, but, like so many others have said, I have a feeling it's going to be Star Fox.

The world is your oyster really. You have everything at your disposal assuming you have Nintendo online account. Well everything but DK64.

I tell you what, I would play a bit of DK country 1 and 2. Just a bit to get those vibes, maybe one world each. Wouldn't take 30 minutes. If you find you are kind of hooked why not finish them?

But as stated above Tropical Freeze really is something special. If you've only got the time and patience for one Country title it's that one. If you have a friend or family member that can hang in fast paced platformer, find em and get ready for a good time.

Now that you mention it, Other M really was that big push for Metroid wasn't it? A more cinematic style in story telling and gameplay and if I remember correctly it was the One More Thing for E3.

The story and characterization of Samus did not go over well at all. I was personally fine with it but the game did not resonate. It's a shame because I was all for the 3rd person action that game offered. I could look passed so many flaws because I loved the way the combat felt in the game. Well besides the 1st person turning of the Wiimote. I wonder if it wasn't mandated that sideways Wii controller must be used, and 1st person must be done by switching your grip, if the game wouldn't have done at least a little better. At least we are mainly out of that era of Nintendo.

Loved Dread, loved Prime 2/3 and I'm sure I'm going to love Prime 4. But yeah at the moment Prime 4 is the safe bet in my eyes. Metroid Prime Returns.
